Railton Road

121 Centre was a squatted self-managed social centre on Railton Road in Brixton, south London from 1981 until 1999. As an anarchist social centre, the venue hosted a bookshop, cafe, infoshop, library, meeting space, office space, printing facility, and rehearsal space. Organisations using the space included Food Not Bombs, Anarchist Black Cross prisoner aid chapters, an anarcho-feminist magazine, a squatters aid organisation, and an anarchist queer group. Regular events at 121 Centre included punk concerts, a women's cafe night, and a monthly queer night. The centre kept a low profile and was one of the longest-lasting squats in London.

Mayall Road is a road in Herne Hill and Brixton. It runs parallel to Railton Road and the area between them was known in the 1970s as the Front Line - an area of troubled race relations and conflict with the police.A street party is held there every year during the August bank holiday.

Brockwell Lido is a large lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Two ex council employees Paddy and Casey took on the running of the Lido for the community. Lambeth council gave Paddy & Casey (ex council workers) a peppercorn lease rate from 1994–2001. Lambeth gave them a one-year extension in 2002 whilst a public consultation was held to decide on the longer term sustainable future of the Lido.

The 1981 Brixton riot, or Brixton uprising, was a series of clashes between mainly black youths and the Metropolitan Police in Brixton, London, between 10 and 12 April 1981. It resulted from racist discrimination against the black community by the mainly white police, especially the police's increased use of stop-and-search in the area, and ongoing tensions resulting from the deaths of 13 black teenagers and young adults in the suspicious New Cross house fire that January. The main riot on 11 April, dubbed "Bloody Saturday" by Time magazine, resulted in 279 injuries to police and 45 injuries to members of the public; over a hundred vehicles were burned, including 56 police vehicles; almost 150 buildings were damaged, thirty of which were burnt out, and many shops were looted. There were 82 arrests. Reports suggested that up to 5,000 people were involved. The Brixton riot was followed by similar riots in July in many other English cities and towns. The Thatcher government commissioned an inquiry, which resulted in the Scarman Report.

Ark Evelyn Grace Academy is a non-selective, coeducational secondary school within the English Academy programme, in Brixton, London. The Academy opened in September 2008 in temporary accommodation admitting its first 180 pupils in year 7. In September 2010 the academy moved to a new purpose-built school building as it admitted its third year 7 year group. The building, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, was awarded the 2011 Stirling Prize.

198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, also known as the 198 Gallery or 198, is an art space and gallery in Railton Road, Brixton, London, that for more than three decades has had a strong commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion.

The Lambeth Country Show is a large, free community gathering that takes place annually in Brockwell Park in Lambeth, generally on the third weekend of July.There are many events at the show, which is funded by Lambeth Council. These include horse riding displays, displays of birds of prey and owls, a variety of animals from the local Vauxhall City Farm, a fun fair, musical performances from quite well known bands such as Aswad, a crafts display and more. Many community groups have a presence at the show and there are a wide variety of foods and drinks available. Chief among the attractions is the novel "vegetable animal" competition which features as part of the Flower Show. Locals compete to create strange and wonderful creatures out of vegetables, which has in the past included an owl made from a pineapple, dinosaurs made from potatoes, and a figurine of Nigel Farage being slapped by a wet fish. Other attractions include sheep shearing, a scarecrow competition and jousting. Activities also include educational masterclasses that invite various organisations to speak about their work. For example, TEDxLambeth, a TEDx conference based in Lambeth, was invited to speak in 2019 about their event at the Royal Society of Arts.About 180,000 people attend the show and come from all sectors of the diverse inner-london community, making it one of the largest free community festivals in Europe. The 2012 Lambeth Country Show took place later than usual, on 15 and 16 September, to avoid clashing with the London Olympics.

Southwyck House, also known locally as the Barrier Block, is a large housing building on the Somerleyton Estate in Brixton, south London. It was commissioned by Lambeth Council and approved by a planning committee which included future prime minister John Major.

Brixton experienced a rapid rise in population during the 19th century as communications with central London improved. Brixton is mainly residential with a prominent street market and substantial retail sector. It is a multiethnic community, with a large percentage of its population of Afro-Caribbean descent. It lies within Inner London and is bordered by Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill, Balham and Herne Hill. The district houses the main offices of Lambeth London Borough Council.Brixton is 2.7 miles (4.3 km) south-southeast from the geographical centre of London near Brixton Underground station on the Victoria Line.

The Commercial (also known as The Commercial Hotel) is a public house at 210-212 Railton Road, Herne Hill, London. It is cited in 'The CAMRA Regional Inventory for London' as being one of only 133 pubs in Greater London with a pub interior of special historic interest, most notably for its, "Original counters, bar-back, fireplaces and much fielded wall panelling" dating from the 1930s. In July 2016, Lambeth Council designated The Commercial as a locally-listed heritage asset of architectural or historic interest, being described as a, "Two-storey Neo Georgian style inter-war pub with a three-part convex façade which follows the curve of the building line".

Brixton House is an Off-West End theatre in Brixton in the London Borough of Lambeth, located at 385 Coldharbour Lane, London, SW9 8GL. It is the successor to Ovalhouse at Kennington, and opened in 2022.
