Rukuhia

Rukuhia railway station was a flag station on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand, located in the settlement of Rukuhia. It was established during an extension of the railway line in the 1870s. The service started with two trains a day.Opening of the line from Hamilton to Ōhaupō was delayed by subsidence at Rukuhia. A service had been planned from 25 February 1878 and the Governor General went over the line on 27 March 1878, but opening was still postponed as large quantities of gravel were poured into a hole. The line finally opened on 4 June 1878. The station was surrounded by peat fires in 1935. A 1943 notice noted that owing to the danger of track subsidence, no engine must be allowed to remain stationary on the siding for any length of time. Tests in 1981 found that the track deformed by about 12mm each time a train went over it, due to the peat swamp.A road to the station was formed in 1879, a siding in 1881, by 1882 it had a 5th class stationmaster's house and gatekeeper's house, by 1884 also a shelter shed, platform and a cart approach, 30 ft (9.1 m) by 20 ft (6.1 m) goods shed and, by 1896, it had cattle yards. A passing loop for 38 wagons was added in 1908 and sheep yards by 1911.On 12 September 1971 Rukuhia closed to all traffic and only a passing loop remains.

Resthills Park is a multi-use sports venue and public park located in Glenview, an outer suburb of Hamilton, New Zealand. It currently serves as the home ground for Waikato RL in the Bartercard Premiership rugby league competition, as well as the Waikato FC football (soccer) team in the New Zealand Football Championship.

Glenview is a suburb in southern Hamilton in New Zealand. It was named by Bruce Lugton of developers Lugton Lands. He chose Glenview because he felt it depicted the area perfectly. It was defined as a suburb in 1963.Glenview was the site of New Zealand's first shopping mall in 1969, grocer Erwin Leonard Guy Abel's Big A Plaza. Today Glenview has a small shopping centre and Resthills Park.

Fitzroy is a suburb in southern Hamilton in New Zealand. It is named after Robert FitzRoy, who commanded HMS Beagle and was later the Governor of New Zealand. It was declared a suburb in 1974.

Peacocke is a semi-rural suburb in southern Hamilton in New Zealand. Peacocke was brought into the city boundaries in 1989. It is one of the future urban zones of Hamilton, along with Rotokauri.

Melville High School is a state co-educational secondary school located in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand. The school shut down at the end of 2023. A new school, Mangakotukutuku College, is due to open in 2024.

Deanwell is a suburb in south-western Hamilton in New Zealand. It is named after Deanwell Properties, the developers who subdivided the area. It was defined as a suburb of Hamilton in 1974.

Bader is a suburb in southern Hamilton in New Zealand. The main street is named after WW II flying ace Douglas Bader. In 2022, Kāinga Ora announced it was building an extra 75 state houses in Bader. There were already older state houses in the area.

Melville is a suburb in southern Hamilton in New Zealand. It is named after James Dougal Melville. Many of the streets in Melville are named after war heroes, including Douglas Bader, Bernard Montgomery, Odette Hallowes, David Beatty and William Slim.Melville lends its name to one of Hamilton's top association football teams, Melville United who compete in the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Premier. It borders the suburbs of Glenview and Fitzroy.

Hamilton Gardens is a public garden park in the south of Hamilton owned and managed by Hamilton City Council in New Zealand. The 54-hectare park is based on the banks of the Waikato River and includes enclosed gardens, open lawns, a lake, a nursery, a convention centre and the Hamilton East Cemetery. It is the Waikato region's most popular visitor attraction, attracting more than 1 million people and hosting more than 2,000 events a year.Hamilton Gardens is described in popular culture as a botanical garden, but does not technically qualify as a botanical garden. Instead, the site features 21 gardens representing the art, beliefs, lifestyles and traditions of different civilisations or historical garden styles. These gardens are grouped into the Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, Cultivar and Landscape garden collections, and there is space for gardens which are still in development.The first development of the gardens began in the early 1960s at what was then the city's waste disposal site. The first substantial development, the Rogers Rose Garden, was opened in 1971 in an attempt to block highway development over the site. Since 1982 many newly developed areas have been opened to the public. Additional features of the gardens now include a lake walkway and a waterfall lookout.

Cobham Bridge is a 143.3 m (470 ft) long girder bridge in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Cobham Drive, which is part of SH1C. It spans the Waikato River. The Ministry of Works plaque at the southern end of the bridge says they designed it and it was opened on 29 June 1963. Its deck is 28 m (92 ft) above sea level. The river bed is 3.5 m (11 ft) above sea level.Like the 1962 Cobham Bridge over the Whanganui River, it was opened when Lord Cobham was Governor General, though not opened by him. Mrs Adams-Schneider, Mayor Denis Rogers and Minister of Works, Stan Goosman, were at the opening.

Peacocke Bridge is a girder bridge under construction over the Waikato River in Hamilton, New Zealand. The bridge on Wairere Drive is part of the Southern Links, which will complete a ring road around Hamilton. It will link Hamilton East with a new suburb of Peacocke. Construction started in 2020, though the plan originated in 1962.The bridge is formed with 2,650 tonnes of steel and is expected to be completed by mid 2024, at a cost of $160.2M, though budgeted at $135M in 2020, estimated at no more than $60M in 2017 and formerly at $40M. The bridge was delayed by COVID-19 and Cyclone Gabrielle and other storms. The four-lane bridge was designed by Bloxam Burnett & Olliver, and is being built by HEB Construction. It will include bus lanes and cycle paths, and will also carry the Peacocke to Pukete sewer line. The river was closed to boats during construction.Both banks of the river have been stabilised to support the bridge. The north bank, next to the bridge abutments, has a 50-degree slope, rising 45 metres (148 ft), or 35 metres (115 ft), and was stabilised with 150-millimetre (5.9 in) soil nails. The total length of the bridge is 215 metres (705 ft), including the 11-metre-high (36 ft) mechanically stabilised earth wall of the southern bridge abutment, which is on compressible, loose Taupō Pumice alluvial soils, of the river terraces. The bridge itself is 180 metres (590 ft) long (made up of a 70-metre (230 ft) northern span, 50-metre (160 ft) central span and a 60-metre (200 ft) southern span), 26.2 metres (86 ft) wide, on 38-metre-deep (125 ft), closely spaced, bridge piles, with 35-metre-long (115 ft) earth anchors and over 600 eight-metre-long (26 ft) soil nails. The bridge is over 30 metres (98 ft) above the normal river level. The main support is a pier on the south bank of the river, formed of weathering steel, in two lattice-shaped, 30-by-22-metre (98 ft × 72 ft) Y sections, each weighing over 200 tonnes. The lattice is made up of 2.2-by-0.82-metre (7.2 ft × 2.7 ft) box-section welded plates. They were lifted into position by a 600-tonne crane.
