Abingdon is a town in Washington County, Virginia, United States, 133 miles (214 km) southwest of Roanoke. The population was 8,376 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Washington County. The town encompasses several historically significant sites and features a fine arts and crafts scene centered on the galleries and museums along Main Street. Abingdon is part of the Kingsport−Bristol (TN)−Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City−Kingsport−Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area − commonly known as the Tri-Cities region.

Located in Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia, Mont Calm — also known as Montcalm — is a historic house. It is a two-story, five-bay brick farmhouse constructed in the Federal style that dates back to 1827. Its two-story extension, which was added in approximately 1905, is 40 feet long and 30 feet broad. A standing seam metal gable roof covers the home, which has a limestone base. A porch with a shed roof and Tuscan order columns supports the front facade. Virginia Governor David Campbell lived there (1779–1859).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Dr. William H. Pitts House is a historic home located at Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. It was built in 1854, and is a two-story, five-bay, stuccoed masonry, Greek Revival style dwelling. The house sits on a limestone foundation and has a gable roof with stepped-gable parapet walls flanking paired chimneys on each end. It has a recessed entrance which features a double-leaf wood entrance door surrounded by a transom and sidelights.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and is located within the Abingdon Historic District.

The college was established November 30, 1967 to serve the residents of Washington County, western Smyth County, and the city of Bristol. Over 3,000 students are enrolled each semester.
