Monk Hesleden is a village and civil parish in County Durham, England. The population of the parish at the 2011 Census was 5,722. The parish is situated to the north-west of Hartlepool, and is on the North Sea coast. Monk Hesleden village is situated a short distance to the south of High Hesleden. The parish has an area of 1,091.35 hectares (4.2137 sq mi) and includes the villages or hamlets of Blackhall Colliery, Blackhall Rocks, Crimdon, Hesleden, High Hesleden and Monk Hesleden. It has a parish council.

Sheraton is a village in County Durham in England. It is situated a few miles to the north-west of Hartlepool. The A19 road bisects the village. In medieval times there was a more sizable settlement here, first recorded in 1050 AD under the name 'Scurafaton'. In the 19th century Sheraton was part of the Parish of Monkhesleton, and later the civil parish of Sheraton with Hulam. Sheraton Hall and Sheraton Hall Cottage date from the mid 18th century and are Grade II listed.

High Hesleden is a village in Monk Hesleden parish, County Durham, in England. It is situated a few miles north of Hartlepool, between Blackhall Rocks and Hesleden. High Hesleden is located mostly along one street, on one side of which lies the village green; there is a turn off (although difficult to recognise), for Monk Hesleden and there is a small country lane which takes you down to Crimdon, passing the Tweddle Blackhalls Farm (which is open to the public). There is a public house, The Ship Inn, which is located centrally, by the village green. The Ship Inn has since closed until further notice

St Mary Magdalene Church is a Church of England parish church in the village of Hart, County Durham, England. It was founded in 675 AD and is the oldest church in Hartlepool. The church is a Grade I listed building, with the tower dating back to the 13th century and the nave being from the 12th.

Hulam Fen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Easington district of east County Durham, England, just south of the village of Hesleden, about 8 km north-west of Hartlepool. Though small, the site supports a range of wetland and grassland communities in an area that is otherwise given over to arable agriculture. At the heart of the site is a hydrostatic spring that is fed by an aquifer in the underlying Magnesian Limestone and around which have developed soligenous mire, tall fen and marshy grassland.

Hesleden ( HEZ-əl-dən) is a village in County Durham, England, south of Peterlee. The name is a combination of Dene and Hesle, which is from "hazel". The combined population of the five communities making up the parish of Monk Hesleden was 5,722 at the 2011 Census.

Blackhall Rocks is a village on the North Sea coast of County Durham, North East England. It is situated on the A1086 between Horden and Hartlepool, and just south of Blackhall Colliery which it adjoins. It is sometimes referred to by locals in the area as "The Rocks". One of the earliest mentions of Blackhall Rocks is in the mid-19th century, when the beach was photographed. This was a time when the beach was part of a minor holiday resort, due to the location of a hotel above the cliffs. It was around this time a railway station was established here, which was closed in 1960. Adjacent to the station a siding and coal depot supplied coal from Blackhall Colliery 1 mile north to the surrounding area. The hotel remained up until the late 1960s when it was demolished, at a time when it had been used as flats, as a form of temporary housing, by Easington (district) Council, since the 1940s. Despite the presence of the hotel, it was not until the 1920s and 1930s that Blackhall Rocks really developed as a community and village, something which is itself evident driving down the "coast road" (the A1086). Most of the houses along this road were built for middle class commuters, hence the proliferation of semi-detached houses and bungalows. In the late 1930s the local council built a large council estate to the west of the coast road, around the road to High Hesleden. Later on in the 1960s and 1970s a series of new council homes were built to the east, between the coast road and the railway line.

Blackhall Colliery is a village on the North Sea coast of County Durham, in England. It is situated on the A1086 between Horden and Hartlepool. To the south of the Blackhall Colliery's Catholic church is Blackhall Rocks. Built around the once extensive mining industry, Blackhall's colliery closed in 1981. Daniel Hall was one of the founding fathers of the colliery and invested heavily in the establishment of the mining infrastructure in the area. It is believed but unconfirmed that the name Black-Hall was established as a result of Daniels alias 'Black' due to his association with the mining of coal and his surname Hall. In 1991 a local campaign to erect a statue of Mr Hall was unsuccessful due to a lack of available funding from the local Authority. There is now an industrial estate built over part of the old colliery buildings, the colliery itself was pulled down in the 1980s. Blackhall Colliery is on the edge of Castle Eden Dene, and Castle Eden Dene Mouth. Over the past couple of decades, there have been many changes. Following the closure of the colliery, the once busy village has economically gone downhill. As time has passed since the closure, other industries have now begun to emerge to once again create employment in the region.With both Blackhall Colliery and Blackhall Rocks being on the main road to Peterlee and Hartlepool. This has meant that these villages have become commuter villages, supplying workers for the now busy and expanding call centres in the nearby towns of Hartlepool and Peterlee.

Blackhall Rocks was one of two railway stations to have served the Blackhalls in County Durham, North East England, and was a stop on the Durham Coast Line. The station was poorly sited for the village that grew around Blackhall Colliery in the years following its opening and, after the opening of the more conveniently sited Blackhall Colliery station in 1936, it came to primarily serve the more southerly village of Blackhall Rocks.
