Aldcliffe-with-Stodday

Aldcliffe is a hamlet, and former township and civil parish, in the civil parish of Aldcliffe-with-Stodday, south-west of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. The hamlet is located on the east bank of the River Lune, and is one and a half miles south west of the Lancaster city centre.The name can be split into two parts, ald which roughly means 'old', and clif which means 'high ground'. There are also a number of different variations over the centuries: Aldeclif (1086), Audecliva (1094), Audeclyviam (1190), Aldeclive (1212), Aidedyf (1341), Auclyff (1577), Awcliffe (1577), Adclife, Aldcliffe, Alclife, Aldclif, Aldclife, Aldclyffe, Altlife, Auldcliffe, Auckliff, Aucliff, Aucliffe and Aukliffe. The first part of the name may also be the Brittonic alt meaning "a steep height or hill, a cliff".The traditional pronunciation is "Awcliffe" while "A 1 d cliff e" may have been the ancient and the newcomer's pronunciation.

Aldcliffe Hall was a 19th-century country house, now demolished, which replaced a previous mediaeval building, on the bank of the Lune estuary in Aldcliffe, Lancashire, England. Built in a porous local stone, it was covered in stucco for protection.

The Royal Albert Hospital was a hospital in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. It opened in 1870 as an institution for the care and education of children with learning problems. By 1909 there were 662 children in residence. Following new legislation in 1913, adults were also admitted. By the time of the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948 the hospital had 886 patients, and by the 1960s there were over 1,000 patients. Following legislation in the 1980s, the patients were relocated in the community, and the hospital closed in 1996. The building was acquired by Jamea Al Kauthar Islamic College to provide Islamic education for girls. The main part of the hospital is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and its west lodge is listed at Grade II.

Stodday is a hamlet in the civil parish of Aldcliffe-with-Stodday, in the Lancaster District, in the English county of Lancashire just south of the city of Lancaster. It is near the A588 road and the River Lune. A mile to the south, Ashton Hall is a mansion dating to 1856, now used as the clubhouse of Lancaster Golf Club, incorporating the remains of a 14th-century tower.It was formerly in the township and civil parish of Ashton with Stodday in Lancaster Rural District, until this was incorporated into the civil parish of Lancaster in 1935.
