The population of the civil parish was estimated at 20 in 2015.Howe, from the Old Norse word haugr, is a Middle English topographic name for a small hill or a man-made mound or barrow. Howe was historically a township in the ancient parish of Pickhill with Roxby in the North Riding of Yorkshire. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it belonged to Count Alan of Brittany. In the Middle Ages the manor belonged to St Leonard's Hospital, York. Howe became a separate civil parish in 1866.

Baldersby is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, about 6 miles (10 km) west of Thirsk and 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Ripon on the A61. The parish includes the village of Baldersby St James, 1 mile (2 km) south-east of the village of Baldersby, but not Baldersby Park, which is in the parish of Rainton with Newby. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 253, increasing to 285 at the 2011 census.Baldersby has a farm shop, an Anglican Mission Room, and a cricket ground with a pavilion and children's play area. The nearest primary school is Baldersby St. James C of E Primary School in nearby Baldersby St James. The Roman road Dere Street forms the western boundary of the parish, now followed by the A1(M) motorway. Baldersby Gate Interchange, Junction 50 of the A1(M), connects the A61 to the A1(M) in the south of the parish.

Royal Air Force Skipton-on-Swale or more simply RAF Skipton-on-Swale is a former Royal Air Force station operated by RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War. The station was located at Skipton-on-Swale 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Thirsk (near the present-day junction of the A61 and A167), North Yorkshire, England. The village of Sandhutton is located just to the east. RAF Skipton-on-Swale was a sub-station of RAF Leeming.

Baldersby St James is a village in the former Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. Several notable buildings in the village were commissioned by Viscount Downe of Baldersby Park and designed by William Butterfield in the 1850s. The Church of St James and its lychgate are both Grade I listed and the old vicarage, the school and the school house are all Grade II* listed.

Holme (or Holme on Swale) is a small village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is located near Pickhill, Sinderby and Ainderby Quernhow, on the west bank of the River Swale. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 60 in 2014.Hambleton Ales is a small brewery which started life in Holme. It has now moved to Melmerby. Holme was historically a township in the ancient parish of Pickhill with Roxby in the North Riding of Yorkshire. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it belonged to the Bishop of Durham as part of his manor of Hutton Conyers and Howgrave. The township formed a detached part of the wapentake of Allertonshire, and retained a detached part at Howgrave, 3 miles (5 km) west of the village, apparently only a single farm, into the 19th century. The township was for that reason referred to as Holme cum Howgrave. Holme became a separate civil parish in 1866.

Ainderby Quernhow is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The village is situated on the B6267 Thirsk to Masham road just east of the A1(M) and is about five miles west of Thirsk. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 70 in 2014.The Quernhow at Ainderby is a small mound on the nearby Roman Road which marked the boundary between the parishes of Ainderby and Middleton Quernhow. The mound at Ainderby Quernhow was demolished to make way for the upgrading of the A1(M) and its history is commemorated in a stone laid down in the grounds of the Quernhow Café which now adjoins the A6055.Ainderby Mires and Ainderby Steeple are also in the district, the latter refers to the local church spire, the former to marshy mires.Ainderby is a place name originally meant village belonging to Eindrithi, a Viking whose name meant 'sole-ruler'. Quernhow, which has also been spelled Whernhowe and Whernou means mill-hill. The first element derives from the Old Norse word kvern meaning a mill stone. How, deriving from the Old Norse word haugr , means a hill. How is a common element in Yorkshire place names but rare in County Durham.

The name Wiske is derived from an Old English word wisca meaning a water meadow. It was once known as the Foulbroke, a name for which some writers commented that it was well deserved.The river was maintained by the River Wiske Internal Drainage Board, which was part of the Shires Group of IDBs. Sandhutton is a small village and civil parish in Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies about 3 miles (5 km) west of Thirsk on the A167. It has been referred to as Hutton, Hutton (Sand), and Sand Hutton. The name derives from Old English sand-hōh-tūn which translates as a sharply projecting piece of sandy ground with an enclosure, farmstead or village upon it.East of the village, on the road to Carlton Miniott, is the Sand Hutton Cross which is now a listed monument. The cross marked the point at which three parishes met and is designated due to the fact that it has survived despite intensive arable farming in the area.In 2017, a 45-acre (18 ha) solar farm was installed to the east of the village. The scheme involved the placing of 20,000 photovoltaic panels that would generate up to 5 MW and would have a life expectancy of 25 years.Sandhutton is the location of Breckenbrough School, an independent special school.

Sinderby is located 223 miles (359 km) north of London and 48 miles (77 km) south of Durham, just east of the A1(M) motorway offering road links to larger cities such as Leeds, London and the Channel Ports. It has a population of 142 people according to the 2001 census, reducing to 137 at the 2011 census.
