Fayette County ( FAY-(y)ət) is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 119,194, an increase from 106,567 in 2010. Fayette County was established in 1821. The county seat, Fayetteville, was established in 1823. Much of Fayette County is bordered on the east side by the Flint River. Fayette County was organized in 1821 after the United States signed a treaty at Indian Springs, Georgia with the Creek people for cession of a large portion of their land. The county and its seat, Fayetteville, were both named in honor of the French aristocrat the Marquis de Lafayette, who aided General George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. Since the late 20th century, Fayette County has been part of the Greater Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It is located south of Atlanta, which is based in Fulton County. Fayette County is minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. As a suburb of Atlanta, Fayette County has increased rapidly in population and development since the late 20th century, nearly doubling its population since 1990.

Over a three-day period from June 22 to June 24, 2007, Chris Benoit, a 40-year-old Canadian professional wrestler employed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), murdered his wife Nancy and their seven-year-old son, Daniel, before hanging himself at their residence in Fayetteville, Georgia, United States. Autopsy results showed that Benoit's wife was murdered first, having died of asphyxiation on the night of June 22. Nancy was found wrapped in a towel with blood under her head, although Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard reported no other signs of a struggle. The couple's son, Daniel Christopher Benoit, who also died of asphyxia, was killed as he was lying sedated in his bed on the morning of June 23. Then, on the evening of June 24, Benoit killed himself in his weight room, when he used his lat pulldown machine to hang himself. He placed Bibles near the bodies of his wife and son. Since Benoit's suicide, numerous explanations for his actions have been proposed, including severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), steroid and alcohol abuse, leading to a failing marriage and other personal problems. This led to numerous media accounts, and a federal investigation into steroid abuse in professional wrestling.

Turtle Pond is a man-made pond feature in Peachtree City, Georgia, United States. It is incorporated as part of Braelinn Country Club. Turtle Pond is a popular recreation area in the heart of Peachtree City. Accessible through the city golf cart path network, Turtle Pond offers leisure activities such as fishing, bird watching, and model yacht sailing. In 1998, Turtle Pond became part of a nationally recognized turtle reintroduction program for Musk Turtles. The site has also been a center for ongoing reptile tagging and study programs through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. As of 2023, a thriving colony of Musk Turtles calls Turtle Pond home.

Fayette County School System is a public school district based in Fayetteville, Georgia, United States and covering residents of Fayette County. The county is included in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The school system serves all of Fayette County. Residents elect a five-member school board to set policy and hire a superintendent of schools. Until May 2013, school board members were elected at-large in the county; this jurisdiction was one of only 20 remaining among the 180 school districts in the state to elect board members by an exclusively at-large process. After trying to persuade the county board of commissioners to change the system, a coalition of residents, represented by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, filed suit against the county and school board for violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, asserting that the county system diluted the voting power of the significant minority of African Americans, who today comprise 20% of the county population.They had been prevented by this system (and disenfranchisement prior to 1965) from ever electing a candidate of their choice to the board or county council in 191 years. As a result of Georgia State Conference of the NAACP, et al. v. Fayette County Board of Commissioners, et al. (2013), the federal court ordered the county on May 22, 2013 to change its electoral system for the County Council and the County School Board to single-member districts, in order to correct and prevent such dilution of voting power. The court's ruling required "the Board of Commissioners and Board of Education to develop a district-based remedial plan that contains at least one district in which black voters comprise a majority of the voting-age population by June 25, 2013."In August 2014, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that superintendent Joseph Barrow Jr. created a tax-payer funded position to pay his wife $75,000 per year through the Fayette County School System. Despite concerns of nepotism raised by at least one member of the board of education and many teachers in the district, the district followed through with the plan.

Fayetteville ( FAY-(y)ət-vil) is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 18,957, up from 15,945 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is located 22 miles (35 km) south of downtown Atlanta.

The Fayette County Courthouse in Fayetteville, Georgia was built in 1825. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is a brick building but was covered with gray stucco. It has a hipped roof with a bracketed cornice. Its tower was added in 1888; the tower's clock was installed in 1909. The building was renovated in 1965 at cost of $70,000.In 1980 it was the oldest courthouse in Georgia in continuous use.

Starrs Mill is an unincorporated community in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. It is centered at Georgia State Route 85 and Georgia State Route 74. It formed around a grist mill of the same name. A historic marker in the community reads: "The property that became Starr's Mill was owned by Hananiah Gilcoat who built the first mill here before his death in 1825. This site, on Whitewater Creek, was less than a mile from the boundary between Creek Indian lands and the State of Georgia. Hilliard Starr, who owned the mill from 1866 until 1879, gave the site its current name. After the first two log structures burned, William T. Glower built the current building in 1907. This mill operated until 1959, using a water-powered turbine, instead of a wheel, to grind corn and operate a sawmill. The Starr's Mill site also included a cotton gin and a dynamo that produced electricity for nearby Senoia."

Fayette County High School (FCHS) is located in Fayetteville, Georgia, United States. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1999 and a Georgia School of Excellence in 2000. The school enrolls approximately 1,322 students in grades 9-12. Fayette County High is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school's mascot is a tiger.
