Ciboure

The Nivelle (French pronunciation: [nivɛl] ; Occitan: Nivèl; widest accepted Basque forms: Ugarana or Urdazuri) is a 39-kilometre (24 mi) long river French department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (France) flowing largely south-east to north-west, with only 7 km of its length being considered navigable. The river results from the union of various streams in Urdazubi (Navarre), going on to cross the Spanish-French border at Dantxarinea after 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) meandering across Navarrese soil. The river pours into the Bay of Biscay on the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (French for Donibane Lohizune) after cutting its way between this town and Ciboure (French for Ziburu) on its final stage. At this point, celebrated Basque French composer and arranger Maurice Ravel was born in one of the front houses overlooking the channel.

The Church of St John the Baptist, Saint-Jean-de-Luz (French: Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Jean-de-Luz; Basque: San Joan Bataiatzailearen eliza (Donibane Lohizune)) is a Roman Catholic church in the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the French department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz-Ciboure is a railway station in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and across the river from Ciboure, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The station is located on the Bordeaux–Irun railway line. The station is served by TGV (high speed trains), Intercités de Nuit (night trains), Intercités (long distance) and TER (local) services operated by the SNCF.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz (French: [sɛ̃ ʒɑ̃ d(ə) lyz]; Occitan: Sent Joan de Lutz; Basque: Donibane Lohitzune, locally Donibane Lohizune [doniˈβane lohiˈs̻une]) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, southwestern France. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is part of the former Basque province of Labourd (Lapurdi).

The Untxin is a coastal river of the French Basque Country, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Southwest France. It is 9.5 km (5.9 mi) long.It rises on the northern slope of the Xoldokogaina, elevation 479 metres (1,572 ft), in the east of Biriatou. The motorway of the Basque Coast (A63) is settled in its valley. It collects in Urrugne waters from the Mandale. The Untxin flows into the ocean in Ciboure.

The Jardin botanique littoral Paul Jovet (2.5 hectares) is a nonprofit botanical garden located at 31, avenue Bernoville Gaëtan, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Aquitaine, France. It is open several days per week in the warmer months; an admission fee is charged. The garden was first envisioned in the 1980s by French botanist Paul Jovet (1896–1991) of the National Museum of Natural History in Biarritz. Its first landscaping and pond excavation took place in 1991, with first trees planted in 1996 and plant exchanges begun in 2003. In 2008 it opened to the public. The garden focuses on regional flora and the seacoast's natural environment. It is set atop a rocky cliff about 50 meters above the Atlantic Ocean, conserves indigenous oak-pine forests and wetland areas, and provides a range of plant habitats for local flora. The grounds are organized as follows: magnolia collection, plants from five continents, useful garden, Atlantic oaks, rock garden, coastal heathland, cliff plants, botanical squares, dunes, wetlands, and coastal oak–pine forest.

Urrugne (French pronunciation: [yʁyɲ]; Basque: Urruña) is a village and a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France. It is part of the traditional Basque province of Labourd.

The Battle of Sans Culottes Camp (5 February 1794) saw a Spanish army commanded by José de Urrutia y de las Casas attack part of the French Army of the Western Pyrenees under Jean-Henri-Guy-Nicolas de Frégeville. The Spanish assault seized two key positions behind the Bidasoa River but was unable to overrun the main position, called Sans Culottes Camp after an eight-hour contest. The War of the Pyrenees action was fought at a location described as being "in front" of (that is, west of) Saint-Jean-de-Luz near the modern France–Spain border. Ventura Caro had 20,000 troops in the Spanish Army of the West Pyrenees. He ordered his left wing near Irun and center in the Baztan Valley to attack the French camps behind the Bidasoa. French army artillery chief Augustin de Lespinasse gave up the outlying fortifications in order to concentrate his strength in the main camp. By the time Frégeville arrived on the scene, the Spanish attack had lost its momentum. Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey, later a Marshal of France under Napoleon, was promoted to general of brigade for his distinguished actions during the battle.

Belharra, (Basque: Belarra, literally "grass, weed") is a reef and a surf spot in France located off Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Northern Basque Country, in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France. The shoal creates a violent wave. Before a jetty was constructed in the harbor, the wave would sometimes swallow ships moored at Socoa. The 8+ metre wave forms northwest of the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, between Socoa and Hendaye, about 2.5 kilometers from the beach. It breaks only rarely, and doesn't break at all most winters. It was first surfed on November 22, 2002. For example, during the winter of 2013-2014, Belharra broke only three times: October 28, December 22 and January 7. The shoal, which sits between 14 and 18 metres deep, consists of a plateau forming a stepped overhang. When there is no swell, the area can be used as a dive site.

The canton of Hendaye-Côte Basque-Sud (before 2015: Canton of Hendaye) is an administrative division in southern France. At the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015, the canton was renamed and reduced from 4 to 3 communes: Biriatou Hendaye Urrugne

Guéthary (French pronunciation: [ɡetaʁi]; Basque: Getaria) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in southwestern France. It is located in the traditional Basque province of Labourd, the town traditionally standing on the northernmost coastal linguistic boundary of the Basque language. Guéthary station has rail connections to Hendaye, Bayonne and Bordeaux.
