Ferny Creek recorded a population of 1,524 at the 2021 census.The suburb is built around and to the south of Dunns Hill (height 561m) with most of Ferny Creek lying between 400 and 500 metres above sea level. It is named after Ferny Creek, a small stream which originates to the south of Dunns Hill in the centre of the suburb. The suburb of Ferny Creek is largely surrounded by conservation zones and national parks, with the Dandenong Ranges national park on its northern and western sides, the Upwey habitat corridor to the south and Sherbrooke Forest to the east.

The Basin Music Festival is held in March each year in the small fringe suburb/village of The Basin at the foot of Mount Dandenong, on the eastern outskirts of Melbourne, Australia. Growing out of the music found in the community, the non-profit, volunteer-run festival presents an eclectic collection of musical styles, including but not limited to rock, jazz, blues, folk, country and world music. The musical styles are decided by the interests and talents found throughout the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne and the Dandenong Ranges. It has formerly had the names of Boronia Technical School and Boronia Heights Secondary College. In 2014, Boronia Heights College merged with Boronia Primary School to form Boronia K-12 College. In early 2015, the old site of "Boronia Heights College" was shut down and was undergoing demolition as of August 2015.
