The house was built between 1920 to 1926 on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, by Australian inventor, engineer and recluse Horatio Thomas Jones. The house was added to the Victorian Heritage Register on 25 March 1993 in recognition of its historical and architectural significance; and was also added to non-statutory lists by the Victorian branch of the National Trust on 27 June 1985 and the now defunct Register of the National Estate on 28 May 1996.
