Haweswater Beck

Bampton is a village and civil parish in the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority area of Cumbria, England, on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It is in the historic county of Westmorland. The parish had a population of 283 according to the 2001 census. In the 2011 census Bampton was grouped with Martindale to give a total of 373. The parish includes the villages of Bampton, Bampton Grange and Bomby. Bampton Grammar school was founded in 17th century when the industrial population was comparatively large. Depopulation reduced the necessity leading to the budgetary axe to fall on school provision. Until 2005 Bampton had a village school, which closed due to lack of children. Haweswater Beck arises as a stream discharge from Haweswater Reservoir and flows eastward, just north of Firth Woods, and then turns north to join the River Lowther between Bampton and Bampton Grange. The village of Bampton centres on The Mardale Inn, Bampton Valley Stores, Bampton Memorial Hall & playground, and Bridge End Garage & caravan site. The Mardale Inn was bought as a Community Pub in May 2022 by Bampton Valley Community Pub, a Community Benefit Society comprising over 500 Shareholder Members. In Bampton Grange is St Patrick's Church, Bampton and the Crown and Mitre Inn (currently closed to non-residents). Bampton produced England's first woman county councillor, Mary Noble, who represented Askham and Bampton on Westmorland County Council in 1907.Also within the village of Bampton is the traditional red telephone box used in the 1987 cult classic movie Withnail & I. There is a book called Ploughing in Latin that has been written about Bampton and one called Cast Iron Community about Burnbanks, the village built to house the Haweswater dam-builders.

Bampton Grange is a village in Cumbria, England. The Haweswater Beck flows eastward, just north of Firth Woods, and then turns north to join the River Lowther between Bampton and Bampton Grange.

Knipescar Common, or Knipe Scar, is an upland area in the east of the English Lake District, above the River Lowther, near Bampton, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. The summit is "indefinite" but reaches 1,118 feet (341 m) and there are limestone outcrops and an ancient enclosure. Wainwright commends the views which include Blencathra to the north and "a continuous skyline of the higher Pennines." Two ring cairns are scheduled monuments. The more northerly is the "ancient enclosure" described by Wainwright.Immediately to the east of the southern part of Knipescar Common lies Shap Beck Quarry, an active limestone quarry.

Bomby is a village in Cumbria, England. Bomby village consists only of one farm house. The farm is mostly known for its specific potatoes, the Kind Edward potato.

Whale is a hamlet in the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority area, Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, it is about a mile south of the village of Askham. In the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 it had a population of 53.

The Naddle Horseshoe is a group of summits in the English Lake District, south of Mardale valley, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.Wainwright's walk starts at Swindale and ascends Scalebarrow Knott at 1,109 feet (338 m) before making a clockwise circuit of the valley of Naddle Beck (not to be confused with the better known Naddle Beck which runs north to the River Greta near Keswick). His route includes Harper Hills at 1,358 feet (414 m), Hare Shaw at 1,639 feet (500 m), Naddle High Forest (this and the next are "nameless" according to Wainwright) at 1,427 feet (435 m), Wallow Crag at 1,380 feet (420 m), a nameless summit at 1,390 feet (420 m), and Hugh's Laithes Pike at 1,390 feet (420 m).

West Ward was a rural district of the administrative county of Westmorland. The area was directly based on the former West Ward rural sanitary district, and therefore indirectly on the old West Ward or hundred of Westmorland. The district existed from 1894 to 1935. The civil parish of Shap became a separate urban district in 1905, and was entirely surrounded by the district. Other places in the district included Patterdale and Askham. In 1935, under a County Review Order it merged with Shap UDC and East Westmorland RDC to become North Westmorland Rural District except for the parish of Patterdale which became part of Lakes Urban District.

Boredale Hause is a mountain pass between Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes in the east of the English Lake District. It links the Patterdale and Boredale valleys. There is a large confusion of paths on the hause, which is largely grassy.

Helton is a village in the Eden district, in the English county of Cumbria. It is about a mile south of the village of Askham. Circa 1870, it had a population of 180 as recorded in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales. The village is situated on a steep slope running down from the limestone fells to the flood plain of the River Lowther. Helton is on Wideworth Farm Road, which forms part of the road north to Penrith, and south towards Bampton. A Wesleyan chapel was built in Helton in c.1857 and is a Grade II listed building, now converted for residential use .

Lowther is a civil parish in Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria. Within the parish are the settlements of Lowther Village, Newtown or Lowther Newtown, Hackthorpe, Whale, and Melkinthorpe. At the 2001 census the parish had a population of 402, increasing to 465 at the 2011 Census.The parish council meets at the Lowther Parish Hall in Hackthorpe. Lowther Endowed Primary School is also at Hackthorpe. Most of the land in the parish belongs to the Lowther family estates. The family seat of the Lowthers was formerly Lowther Castle which is now a ruin but set in spectacular parkland. Hackthorpe once had its own magistrates' court which is now part of the village's pub. A large part of the parish is within the Lake District National Park.

Swindale Beck is a stream in Cumbria, England. It is formed at Swindale Head where Mosedale Beck, from the slopes of Tarn Crag, joins Hobgrumble Beck from Selside Pike. The stream flows north-east along Swindale and joins the River Lowther near Rosgill between Shap and Bampton. Its waters then flow via the River Eamont into the Solway Firth. Prior to 1859, it had been straightened to clear land for grazing. In 2016, 750 metres (2,460 ft) of straightened channel was replaced with 890 m (2,920 ft) of a new sinuous channel, reconnecting the stream to its surrounding floodplain. This resulted in a rapid and marked improvement in its diversity. In 2022, the project was awarded the European Riverprize.
