Swindale Beck

Seat Robert is a hill in the east of the English Lake District, south west of Shap, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 1,688 feet (515 m), and has a cairn and an Ordnance Survey "ring" at ground level rather than the usual trig point column. Wainwright's route is a clockwise circuit from Swindale reaching Seat Robert by way of Langhowe Pike at 1,313 feet (400 m) and Great Ladstones at 1,439 feet (439 m), and continuing over High Wether Howe at 1,705 feet (520 m) and Fewling Stones and 1,667 feet (508 m). The first section of his route follows the Old Corpse Road, a corpse road, along which corpses were carried from Mardale to be buried at Shap.

The Naddle Horseshoe is a group of summits in the English Lake District, south of Mardale valley, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.Wainwright's walk starts at Swindale and ascends Scalebarrow Knott at 1,109 feet (338 m) before making a clockwise circuit of the valley of Naddle Beck (not to be confused with the better known Naddle Beck which runs north to the River Greta near Keswick). His route includes Harper Hills at 1,358 feet (414 m), Hare Shaw at 1,639 feet (500 m), Naddle High Forest (this and the next are "nameless" according to Wainwright) at 1,427 feet (435 m), Wallow Crag at 1,380 feet (420 m), a nameless summit at 1,390 feet (420 m), and Hugh's Laithes Pike at 1,390 feet (420 m).

Mosedale Beck is a stream in Cumbria, England, which runs between Tarn Crag and Branstree, flowing north to join Swindale Beck at Swindale Head; Swindale Beck then flows north east to join the River Lowther near Rosgill, between Shap and Bampton. The upper valley of Mosedale Beck is broad and boggy, containing a single building: Mosedale Cottage, a bothy supported by the Mountain Bothies Association, and whitewashed to make it more clearly visible in poor weather. The beck then changes character and forms waterfalls called Forces Falls or The Forces as it drops to the valley of Swindale.

Shap Rural is a very large, but sparsely populated, civil parish in the Eden district of Cumbria in England, covering part of the Lake District National Park. It had a population of 119 in 2001, increasing to 130 at the 2011 Census.Within the parish are the hamlets and settlements of Wet Sleddale, Hardendale and Swindale, most of the Shap Fells range and the reservoirs of Haweswater (part) and Wet Sleddale. The village of Mardale Green, which disappeared when Haweswater was converted into a reservoir in the 1930s, was in the parish. The parish was created in 1904 with the splitting of the former civil parish of Shap into urban and rural parts. Shap Urban, (since 1935 just Shap), was administered by an urban district council from 1905 to 1935. Shap and Shap Rural today have a joint parish council. Major landowners in the parish are the Lowther Family Estates and United Utilities. Junction 39 of the M6 motorway lies within the parish. Shapbeck Limestone quarry owned by Hanson plc is in the northern part of the parish though the Hardendale Corus limestone quarry and works and the famous Cemex (formerly RMC) Shap Granite quarries and works are within both Shap Rural and Shap parishes. The cottage owned by Uncle Monty in the cult 1986 film Withnail & I is located by the reservoir at Wet Sleddale.

Bomby is a village in Cumbria, England. Bomby village consists only of one farm house. The farm is mostly known for its specific potatoes, the Kind Edward potato.

Naddle Forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is located on either side of the northern section of Haweswater reservoir, near the villages; Burnbanks and Bampton. Naddle Forest SSSI includes Low Forest, Guerness Wood, High Forest and Mirkside. The protected area includes Wallow Crag.

Bampton Grange is a village in Cumbria, England. The Haweswater Beck flows eastward, just north of Firth Woods, and then turns north to join the River Lowther between Bampton and Bampton Grange.

Sleddale Hall is a farmhouse on the north side of the Wet Sleddale valley near Shap in Cumbria, England. It featured as "Crow Crag", Uncle Monty's Lake District country cottage in the cult film Withnail and I.

Haweswater Beck flows through Cumbria in England. It arises as a stream discharge from Haweswater Reservoir, at Gill Dubs, just east of the dam, and flows eastward, just north of Firth Woods, and then turns north to join the River Lowther between Bampton and Bampton Grange. Below Burnbanks near the Haweswater Dam it is crossed by Naddle Old Bridge (a disused Grade II listed 18th-century road bridge) and a little further downstream (at NY515161) by Park Bridge, a packhorse bridge. Between these bridges the stream is followed by the Coast to Coast Walk.

Bampton is a village and civil parish in the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority area of Cumbria, England, on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It is in the historic county of Westmorland. The parish had a population of 283 according to the 2001 census. In the 2011 census Bampton was grouped with Martindale to give a total of 373. The parish includes the villages of Bampton, Bampton Grange and Bomby. Bampton Grammar school was founded in 17th century when the industrial population was comparatively large. Depopulation reduced the necessity leading to the budgetary axe to fall on school provision. Until 2005 Bampton had a village school, which closed due to lack of children. Haweswater Beck arises as a stream discharge from Haweswater Reservoir and flows eastward, just north of Firth Woods, and then turns north to join the River Lowther between Bampton and Bampton Grange. The village of Bampton centres on The Mardale Inn, Bampton Valley Stores, Bampton Memorial Hall & playground, and Bridge End Garage & caravan site. The Mardale Inn was bought as a Community Pub in May 2022 by Bampton Valley Community Pub, a Community Benefit Society comprising over 500 Shareholder Members. In Bampton Grange is St Patrick's Church, Bampton and the Crown and Mitre Inn (currently closed to non-residents). Bampton produced England's first woman county councillor, Mary Noble, who represented Askham and Bampton on Westmorland County Council in 1907.Also within the village of Bampton is the traditional red telephone box used in the 1987 cult classic movie Withnail & I. There is a book called Ploughing in Latin that has been written about Bampton and one called Cast Iron Community about Burnbanks, the village built to house the Haweswater dam-builders.

Shap Abbey was a religious house of the Premonstratensian order of Canons regular situated on the western bank of the River Lowther in the civil parish of Shap Rural, around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the village of Shap, in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. The site is in the care of English Heritage and managed on its behalf by the Lake District National Park.
