Peniche Fortress

Peniche (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɨˈniʃɨ] ) is a seaside municipality and a city in the Oeste region, in the historical province of Estremadura, and in the Leiria District. It has 26,431 inhabitants, in an area of 77.55 km2. The city itself has a population of about 15,600 inhabitants. The present mayor is Henrique Bertino, elected by the independent coalition GCEPP (Grupo de Cidadãos Eleitores por Peniche; Electors for Peniche Group of Citizens).

The Estádio do G.D. Peniche, officially named Estádio do Grupo Desportivo de Peniche is a Soccer-specific stadium located in Peniche, Portugal. The stadium hosts home games for G. D. Peniche and for Leiria Football Association tournament games.

Furninha, also known as Dominique's cave, is a natural cave on the southern slope of the Peniche peninsula in Portugal. The cave is situated on the cliffs between the Peniche Fortress and the Cape Carvoeiro. The cave is located furthest west of any Neanderthal site. Neanderthals became extinct over 40,000 years ago. The cave was also inhabited by modern humans during the Neolithic.

The Lighthouse of Cabo Carvoeiro (Portuguese: Farol do Cabo Carvoeiro) is an active lighthouse in the civil parish of Peniche, municipality of the same name, in the Portuguese district of Leiria.

Cabo Carvoeiro (Cape Carvoeiro) is cape which lies on the Atlantic coast, along the westernmost point of the Peniche Peninsula, in the civil parish of Peniche and the Oeste region. Opposite to the Berlengas archipelago, the cape is integrated into a natural terrestrial and maritime reserve, in the vicinity of Furninha, a site known for the discovery of prehistoric remains suggesting human occupation since the Neolithic. Owing to historical storms and shipwrecks, a 25 m (82 ft) high lighthouse was constructed on the promontory to assist maritime shipping.

The Fort Nossa Senhora da Consolação (Portuguese: Forte de Nossa Senhora da Consolação), also known as Fort of Consolação Beach (Portuguese: Forte da Praia da Consolação) is located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal in the parish of Atouguia da Baleia, in the municipality of Peniche in Leiria District. It was built in 1645 during the Portuguese Restoration War on the initiative of D. Jerónimo de Ataíde, 6th Count of Atouguia and Lord of Peniche.

Baleal is a small island located 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) north of Peniche, in the Oeste region of Portugal, separated from the mainland by a tombolo. At the extremity of the island one can find the inaccessible ilhota das Pombas and the ilhéu de Fora. Baleal has a past related to whaling. This small island was the site of the cutting and carving of whales on their migratory route to the northern seas. Located in the region of Peniche, Baleal has become a major vacation spot with a potential for water sports almost unmatched in Europe. The coastal shape, namely the bay and northern strip of coast associated with Baleal create unique conditions in Europe for the practice of surfing and body boarding.

Atouguia da Baleia is a parish in the municipality of Peniche, in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 8,954, in an area of 47.02 km². The village of Atouguia da Baleia proper has almost 2,000 residents. The geology of Atouguia da Baleia is Late Jurassic Lourinhã Fm., where the dinosaur Miragaia longicollum was found.

The Fort of Paimogo, also known as the Fort of Our Lady of the Angels of Paimogo (Portuguese: Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo), stands in a dominant position on Paimogo beach near the town of Lourinhã, Lisbon District in Portugal Constructed in 1674, it ceased to serve a military function in 1834 and is now under threat from coastal erosion. The fort presents an almost unique example of a fort from that period that has not undergone subsequent modification.
