Occidental Refinery

Canvey Wick is a 93.2-hectare (230-acre) Site of Special Scientific Interest at the south-west corner of Canvey Island in Essex. It is owned by The Land Trust and 18.5 hectares (46 acres) is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Buglife as a nature reserve, who are working to bring more of the area under management and to improve public access.

Lower Horse is a 31.1-acre (12.6 ha) uninhabited island off the English coast, lying in the Thames Estuary between Canvey Island and Stanford-le-Hope, close to grid reference TQ760828.

Holehaven Creek is a 272.9-hectare (674-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) between Canvey Island and Corringham in Essex.The SSSI consists of Holehaven Creek itself and part of the adjoining East Haven Creek and Vange Creek. It is part of the Thames Estuary, and drains the surrounding marshes into the river. It has been designated an SSSI because its intertidal marshes and mudflats support nationally important (and sometimes internationally) numbers of wintering black-tailed godwits. Curlews and dunlins are also sometimes present in nationally significant numbers.The channel up the creek is accessible to small boats, and the Thames Estuary Path runs along its eastern boundary.

Coryton Refinery was an oil refinery in Essex, England, on the estuary of the River Thames 28 miles (45 km) from central London, between Shell Haven Creek and Hole Haven Creek, which separates Canvey Island from the mainland. It was a part of the Port of London and was the last of the three major refineries on the Thames Estuary to remain in operation, following closure of Shell Haven and BP Kent. Output was delivered by road, sea and rail, and it was linked to Stanlow Refinery in North West England by the UK Oil Pipeline (UKOP). There is a 753 MW gas-fired power station, opened in 2002 and run by Coryton Energy Co Ltd, part of Intergen. In January 2012, Petroplus filed for bankruptcy. Coryton Refinery ceased production in June 2012. The site is being turned into an industrial hub to be called Thames Enterprise Park.

Coryton railway station served the village of Kynochtown (later Coryton) and the Coryton Refinery in Essex, England, between 1901 and 1952.

Thames Haven Railway Station is a freight terminal (formerly a passenger station) on the coast of Essex, England. It is the terminus of the goods-only Thames Haven branch.

Benfleet railway station is on the London, Tilbury and Southend line, serving the towns of South Benfleet and Canvey Island, Essex. It is 29 miles 11 chains (46.9 km) down the main line from London Fenchurch Street via Basildon and it is situated between Pitsea to the west and Leigh-on-Sea to the east. Its three-letter station code is BEF. It was opened in 1855. The station and all trains serving it are currently operated by c2c.

The Church of St Margaret is a 14th-century grade II* listed church near Bowers Gifford, Essex. As is common with many Essex churches, it features a wooden bell-cot surmounting a stone tower.

Cornelius Vermuyden School is a secondary school with academy status for boys and girls ages 11–16. Located on Canvey Island, Essex, the school is named after the Dutch land engineer Sir Cornelius Vermuyden (1595-1683) who reclaimed large areas of fenland in England, and supervised the construction of the sea walls around Canvey in 1623. The school is a specialist arts and maths and computing college.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is the parish church of South Benfleet, Essex. The church dates to around the 12th century, and predates the neighbouring Hadleigh Castle, which lies to the east a few miles away. The church was designated as a Grade I listed building in 1952.

The Battle of Benfleet was an 894 battle between the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons commanded by Edward the Elder and Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, the son and son-in-law of Alfred the Great respectively. The battle was part of a campaign started by the Vikings in 892 to raid and potentially occupy lands in England, having been defeated by the armies of France. As part of this campaign the invaders were supported by those Vikings who had settled in England following an earlier invasion launched in 865. The battle was a victory for the Anglo-Saxons who successfully captured a number of women and children, as well as capturing or destroying the Viking ships. After their defeat the Vikings continued to raid England until they disbanded in 895 after being forced to abandon a series of camps. The rest of Alfred's reign was peaceful, and he was succeeded by Edward as King of Wessex in 899. In time Edward would become the ruler of Mercia, uniting the two kingdoms.
