The Union Park Hotel is a historic hotel building located at 1519-1521 W. Warren Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois. The building was built in 1929-30 as an apartment hotel, a common type of housing for Chicago laborers in the 1920s. The hotel's Art Deco design reflects the national popularity of the style in the 1920s. The building's piers give it a vertical emphasis common to Art Deco works, and its decorative elements reflect the style's geometric focus. The colorful brick and terra cotta facade of the building is also characteristic of Art Deco buildings of the late 1920s, though color is seldom used extensively in Chicago's other Art Deco buildings.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 7, 2010.

First Baptist Congregational Church

First Baptist Congregational Church is a United Church of Christ and Baptist congregation currently located at 60 N. Ashland Blvd. in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The church building is an Illinois Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was designed by architect Gurdon P. Randall for the Union Park Congregational Church, founded in 1860, and was built between 1869 and 1871. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Mayor's Office, City Council, and General Relief Committee of Chicago were temporarily headquartered in the church. In 1910, the building of nearby First Congregational Church (founded in 1851) burnt down. Union Park Congregational then merged with First Congregational to form (New) First Congregational Church. Two other congregations would eventually merge into the new First Congregational Church: Leavitt Street Congregational Church (founded in 1868) in 1917 and Bethany Congregational Church in the 1920s. On August 6, 1944, the Mozart Baptist Church was founded at 114 N. Mozart Street in Chicago. In 1951, the growing congregation moved to a building at 2900 W. Adams Street. In 1970, the majority-black Mozart Baptist merged with First Congregational to form First Congregational Baptist Church. The merged congregation continued to meet in the First Congregational building. The Lemont limestone building, which has a slate roof, is nearly square in plan except for shallow transepts barely a few feet deep at the north and south sides. The interior was designed by Randall in amphitheater style, with a nod to the sermon-centered Congregational service. Randall is often credited with originating this seating design, which has been widely imitated over the years. Immediately adjacent to the south is the smaller Carpenter Chapel, a long rectangular space with a simpler plastered and wood-trimmed interior; its exterior is also of Lemont limestone and is built in a similar style. The Carpenter Chapel's spire, the church's thin south spire, and the steeple together form a line of increasing height from left to right, visually joining the two structures. Part of the main church building's roof and interior were severely damaged in the February 2, 2011 blizzard.The church is highlighted in many books on church architecture, among them, "Chicago Churches: A Photographic Essay" by Elizabeth Johnson (Uppercase Books Inc, 1999) as well as "Chicago Churches and Synagogues: An Architectural Pilgrimage" by George A. Lane, SJ and Algimantas Kezys, SJ (Loyola Press, 1982). The building is an Illinois Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on January 21, 1982.

Union Park is a municipal park in Chicago, Illinois, comprising 13.46 acres (5.45 ha).Located in the Near West Side, the park is just south of Ashland/Lake station on the Green and Pink lines of the Chicago 'L', bordered by North Ashland Avenue on the west, West Lake Street on the north, the diagonal North Ogden Avenue along most of the east border, and West Washington Boulevard on the south. The park has several large green fields used for demonstrations or various forms of football, playgrounds, a swimming pool, a fieldhouse, tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts. While the name was chosen in 1853 in reference to the United States' federal union, Union Park has a considerable labor history. The surrounding neighborhood is the home of most of the city's labor union offices, including the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, the Teamsters, LIUNA, the Workers United Hall, and over a dozen others. In the 1910s, the park was one of the only racially integrated parks in the city. In 2006, the park was the starting point for Chicago's wing of the 2006 immigration reform protests, including the Great American Boycott on International Workers Day, which were the largest demonstrations in the history of Chicago to date. It is also the site of the annual Pitchfork Music Festival, North Coast Music Festival, and many other music festivals and political protests. In 2006, the city commissioned a statue of James Connolly, an Irish republican and Marxist who was executed in 1916, on the south west corner.

Madison station (CTA)

Madison was a rapid transit station on the Chicago "L"'s Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad, serving its Logan Square branch from 1895 to 1951. The station was typical of those constructed by the Metropolitan, with a Queen Anne station house and two wooden side platforms adjacent to the tracks. For much of its existence, Madison served the nearby sports arena Chicago Stadium. The Metropolitan was one of four founding companies of the "L", and the first of its lines to be powered by electricity. The "L"'s companies merged operations under Chicago Elevated Railways (CER) in 1911 and formally merged into the Chicago Rapid Transit Company (CRT) in 1924. Private ownership of the "L" ended in 1947 when the public Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) assumed operations. Plans to replace the Logan Square branch whereupon Madison lay with a subway to provide a more direct connection to downtown had dated to the late 1930s, and the CTA opened the Milwaukee-Dearborn subway on February 25, 1951, closing Madison and its adjacent stations in the process, although Madison's tracks and station house remained standing. The station house continued in use as a commercial building into the late 1990s, when it was demolished despite recognition of its historic significance. The tracks continued to be used for non-revenue service until they were reopened as part of the Pink Line in 2006. Given the proximity of the site to Chicago Stadium and its successor the United Center, there have been several attempts at reviving the station, especially after the opening of the Pink Line. In 2017, however, the CTA decided instead to reopen a station on Damen for the Green Line for added service to the United Center.

Lake Street Transfer

The Lake Street Transfer was a transfer station between Chicago's Lake Street Elevated and Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad, both of which were parts of the Chicago "L". It existed from 1913 to 1951, when it was rendered obsolete by the construction of the Dearborn Street Subway. It was an amalgamation of two separate stations – Wood on the Lake Street Elevated, one block away from the site of the future transfer station, and Lake on the Metropolitan that was on the site – that had been constructed in 1893 and 1895, respectively. The merger of the stations was a legal obligation to the Lake Street Elevated when the four companies that had formed the Chicago "L" merged in the early 1910s and involved the closing of Wood station while the Lake Street Elevated built its station at the site. After its construction, the transfer station served as the transfer between the two lines. It was double-decked, with the Metropolitan's tracks and station being located immediately above the Lake Street's tracks and station. Access to the Lake Street platforms was via a station house at the street level, and passengers would then use the platforms to access the Metropolitan's platforms via additional stairways. However, the construction of the Dearborn Street Subway rendered the Metropolitan's line in the area obsolete, and the station was closed shortly thereafter, although remnants of the station would remain until the 1960s. The site of the station later served as the junction of the Paulina Connector to the Lake Street Elevated, which was intended for temporary operation and would not enter revenue service until the Pink Line opened in 2006.
