The Town of Carbondale is a home rule municipality located in Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 6,434 at the 2020 United States Census. Carbondale is a part of the Glenwood Springs, CO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located in the Roaring Fork Valley, downstream from Aspen and upstream from the mouth of the Roaring Fork River at Glenwood Springs. The town proper sits on the south bank of the river, near its confluence with the Crystal River. Carbondale's horizon is dominated by the 12,953 ft (3,952 m) tall Mount Sopris several miles to the south of town. Carbondale is the northern terminus of the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway.

The Holland-Thompson Property, at 1605 CO 133 in Carbondale, Colorado, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. The listing included two contributing buildings, four contributing structures, and three contributing sites.The Thompson House, a brick Queen Anne-style house on the property, was built in several stages from 1886 to 1910.

Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS), founded in 1953, is a coeducational boarding and day school in Carbondale, Colorado. CRMS educates roughly 175 students in grades 9 through 12. The curriculum emphasizes rigorous college preparatory academics, exposure to visual and performing arts, educational experience in the wilderness, campus service crews, and required athletics. In 2020, school review website Niche ranked Colorado Rocky Mountain school as one of Colorado's best boarding schools and best high schools for the arts.

The Crystal River is a tributary of the Roaring Fork River. It is approximately 40 miles (64 km) long and is located in Gunnison, Pitkin and Garfield counties in Colorado, United States.The river is a popular fly fishing and outdoor tourism destination.The Crystal River remains one of the few rivers in Colorado that is undammed along its length, making the segments that are upstream of large ranching irrigation diversions outside of Carbondale eligible for federal Wild and Scenic River protection. The Crystal Valley historically was a seasonal home and hunting ground of the Parianuche and Yampa bands of the Ute people.

The Missouri Heights School, in Garfield County, Colorado near Carbondale, Colorado, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.The 26 by 44 feet (7.9 m × 13.4 m) school was built in 1917. It is located at an elevation of 6,950 feet (2,120 m) "in a rolling open alpine plateau area known since the late 1800s as Missouri Heights. Surrounded by cattle range and scrubland thick with sagebrush, the Missouri Heights School property includes a school building, a teacherage, two outhouses and a coal shed."It is located on County Road 102, 0.5 miles (0.80 km) east of its junction with County Road 100, and is about 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of the town of Carbondale.

Catherine is a census-designated place (CDP) in and governed by Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The CDP is a part of the Glenwood Springs, CO Micropolitan Statistical Area. Spring Gulch is a cross-country ski area located on Thompson Creek Road in northwestern Pitkin County, Colorado, six miles west of Carbondale, Colorado, USA. The ski area shares its name with a historical 19th and early 20th century coal mining townsite, Spring Gulch, which is in the vicinity mostly to the south of the ski area proper. The area is run by the non-profit Mount Sopris Nordic Council for the benefit of community members and visitors. Use of the area is free of cost and limited to cross-country skiing activities. The terrain consists primarily of rolling trails among gambel oak and aspen trees. Views of the nearby Mount Sopris and Elk Mountains are visible from some of the higher trails. The area was formed in cooperation with the local North Thompson Cattlemen's Association, which owns the land and uses it for summer grazing, during which time it is closed to all recreational use. Notable annual events include the Ski for Sisu fundraiser, the Alpine Bank Classic high school Junior Olympic qualifiers, and the Colorado Rocky Mountain School Rat Race. Spring Gulch is the primary training ground for the Nordic team at CRMS.

Mount Sopris is a twin-summit mountain in the northwestern Elk Mountains range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The prominent 12,965-foot (3,952 m) mountain is located in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness of White River National Forest, 6.6 miles (10.7 km) north by northeast (bearing 30°) of the community of Redstone in Pitkin County, Colorado, United States.

The Sumers Lodge in Glenwood Springs, Colorado is a rustic log house built in 1935 for New York financier George Sumers. It was designed by Chilson Aldrich, and some of its furnishings were designed and made by Thomas C. Molesworth.The Sumers Lodge is a large two story rectangular log structure with a projecting sun porch on the entrance side. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
