It is located at an elevation of 6,950 feet (2,120 m) "in a rolling open alpine plateau area known since the late 1800s as Missouri Heights. Surrounded by cattle range and scrubland thick with sagebrush, the Missouri Heights School property includes a school building, a teacherage, two outhouses and a coal shed."It is located on County Road 102, 0.5 miles (0.80 km) east of its junction with County Road 100, and is about 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of the town of Carbondale.

Each year between 15,000 and 20,000 people attend the event over the course of the three days that it is held. The event's sponsoring organization is Carbondale Arts, a non-profit organization supporting the arts in Carbondale.

The Crystal Valley historically was a seasonal home and hunting ground of the Parianuche and Yampa bands of the Ute people.

McNulty Reservoir Dam in Eagle County, Colorado, United States, sits 7,999 feet (2,438 metres) above sea level in Colorado's Rocky Mountains between Rifle, Colorado and Vail, Colorado and 6.8 miles (11 kilometres) outside El Jebel, Colorado. The Dam is a water storage that used to be utilized for ranching purposes on the historic Mcnulty Ranch.The reservoir and dam are named for Eagle County, Colorado's McNulty family of cattle ranchers. The McNulty family members have been Eagle County, Colorado settlers from the 1880s and cattle ranchers there from the 1920s. A portion of their McNulty Ranch, a one time 2,500-acre cattle ranch (1,000 ha) operation on the Eagle-Garfield County line, was sold for Open Space conservation to Eagle county in 2006 for approximately $2 million. It is closed to any public access, fishing, or recreation.

The Lake Christine Fire burned near Basalt and Carbondale, in Eagle County, Colorado, United States. The fire was the result of an act of criminal arson. It started on July 3, 2018, and was later downgraded to a Burned Area Response on September 4, 2018, after 13 weeks. It destroyed a total of 12,588 wilderness acres on Basalt Mountain and seriously injured a volunteer firefighter. The Lake Christine fire also destroyed the home of a long-time volunteer firefighter who was battling the blaze in response to his call of duty on the evening of July 4. Several structures were destroyed.
