Thorne, South Yorkshire

Thorne & Moorends—consisting of the town of Thorne, plus Moorends and Waterside—is one of 21 electoral wards in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It forms part of the Doncaster North and Don Valley parliamentary constituencies. Thorne and Moorends elect three councillors to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council currently held by Labour. In 2011 it had a population of 17,295. The ward was formed in 2015.

Thorne Memorial Park Miniature Railway is a 7+1⁄4 in (184 mm) gauge and 5 in (127 mm) gauge miniature railway built in 1998 in Thorne, South Yorkshire, England, operating on two loops within the park.

Thorne South railway station is one of two stations serving the market town of Thorne in South Yorkshire, England. The station is 9.75 miles (16 km) north of Doncaster on the South Humberside Main Line. It is unstaffed, and the only passenger facilities are standard shelters on each platform. The station was more substantial until the mid-1970s, with the westbound platform being an island, a subway linking the platforms and wooden buildings and canopies on each side (the platforms were also located slightly further east than now). There was also a signal box - this was abolished when the line was resignalled in the early 1980s. The other station in the town is Thorne North, which is served by trains towards Hull.

Trinity Academy is a non-selective co-educational secondary school in the English Academy programme, at Thorne near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is a member of the Emmanuel Schools Foundation, established by entrepreneur Sir Peter Vardy to educate pupils within a Christian ethos.

Thorne Waterside railway station, sometimes referred to as "Thorne Lock" because of its location, was built by the South Yorkshire Railway as the terminus of its line from Doncaster. It was the first railway station to be opened in Thorne. The line was opened for goods traffic on 11 December 1855 and to passenger services on 7 July 1856. The station was built adjacent to the Stainforth to Keadby Canal and goods traffic was trans-shipped for forwarding on. Passenger services lasted for around 3 years before being transferred to a new station, officially called "Thorne" but usually referred to as Thorne (Old) railway station, near the town centre. A third station, Thorne South, on the "straightened" replaced this from 1864, and is still open for business.

Thorne (Old) railway station was the second railway station built by the South Yorkshire Railway to serve the town of Thorne, South Yorkshire, England. It was situated near the town centre on the first stage of the canal-side line to Keadby, which was opened in September 1859. The new line left the original South Yorkshire Railway just before arriving at Thorne Waterside taking a right-handed junction towards the town centre. When the line opened this station was the terminus of the line. The canalside line fell out of use after new 'straightened' lines were opened in 1864, with a new station Thorne South about a third of a mile to the south. Another station Thorne North opened, to the north of the town centre, with the line to Hull in 1869.

Thorne North railway station is a station on the Hull and Doncaster Branch serving the market town of Thorne, South Yorkshire, England. Thorne North is one of two stations for the town, the other being Thorne South station, 1.3 miles away on the opposite side of the town which is used for services eastward towards Scunthorpe.

The South Yorkshire Way is the name for two interlinked Long Distance footpaths in the county of South Yorkshire. The Boundary Route is a 171-mile (275 km) route around the outskirts of the county, whilst the Central Route is a 98-mile (158 km) route through the heart of the county. Both trails start and end at the same points; Thorne North railway station and Dore & Totley railway station. They were devised by Andrew White in 2014 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the formation of South Yorkshire as a county.

Moorends is a village in the north-east of the City of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, situated on the border with East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It is part of the civil parish of Thorne, which lies to the south.Moorends is located on the edge of Thorne Moors, part of the Humberhead Levels, at an elevation of around 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) above sea level. The moors can be accessed via Grange Road. The village grew up with housing being built to house the miners working in Thorne Colliery, which was developed in the village. Before the coal mine was sunk, the area was largely farmland with only a handful of houses. A missionary church was provided by the owners of the coal mine during the colliery's development (c. 1912, however, a permanent church, St Wilfrith's, was built in 1934, and this became its own parish in 1956.The legendary goalkeeper Ted Sagar was born in Moorends in 1910. It is also home to one public house.

HM Prison Hatfield (formerly HMP & YOI Moorland Open) is a Category D men's prison and Young Offenders Institution, located near Hatfield Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service.

Club Thorne Colliery (formerly Thorne Colliery F.C.) is a football club based in Moorends, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. They are currently members of the Humber Premier League Premier Division and play at the Welfare Ground.

Thorne Colliery was a large colliery within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire in the South Yorkshire Coalfield. The colliery was open between 1925 and 1956; but had operational issues including shaft water, war time crises and maintenance trouble, causing the pit to be non-productive for much of its lifespan. Production ended in 1958 due to geological problems. Unsuccessful proposals to restart production were made in the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2004 the pit pumps were turned off and the headgear demolished.
