Auburn railway station is located on the Lilydale, Belgrave and Alamein lines in Victoria, Australia. It serves the eastern Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn East, and it opened on 3 April 1882 as Auburn Road. It was renamed Auburn on 1 September 1882.The current two-storey station building dates back to 1916, when the line between Hawthorn and Camberwell was regraded. It features brick and stucco facades punctuated by arches, and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.In 1963, a third line was provided between Hawthorn and Camberwell. These works included a new Up platform (Platform 1), with Platform 2 becoming a bi-directional platform.

Swinburne Senior Secondary College is a co-educational government secondary college located at 505 Burwood Road Hawthorn Victoria which caters for Years 11 and 12 students. The Hawthorn Fire Station is a historic fire station at 66-68 William Street in Hawthorn in Victoria, Australia. It has also been known as the Hawthorn Metropolitan Fire Station and as the Former Hawthorn Fire Station. It was recognized by the Victoria Heritage Council by listing into the Victorian Heritage Register. It was described in 1999 as "architecturally and historically important to the State of Victoria." The two storey asymmetrically planned, red brick building consists of a fire station at ground floor level and two flats above. The building is designed in the Edwardian Freestyle and its most notable features are its arched vehicle openings with original timber doors, and its Art Nouveau wrought iron detailing. Apart from minor and reversible modifications the building is remarkably intact and retains all the features of a small suburban fire station. andThe Hawthorn Fire Station is architecturally important as a particularly successful adaptation of the Edwardian Freestyle to a domestically scaled suburban fire station. It also was recognized in 1992 by the City of Boroondara as "Architecturally, an original and successful example of Edwardian Freestyle architecture applied by prominent architects, Oakden and Ballantyne, to.a utility-use building which is unmatched in other contemporary fire stations, and possesses valuable Art Nouveau inspired iron detailing: of high regional importance. / Historically, of local interest as a public utility building."It has also been recognized by the National Trust in 1985 or 2005 as "A successful and largely intact Edwardian Freestyle fire station of 1910 by the prominent architects Oakden & Ballantyne, distinguished by its deeply set arched vehicle entrances complete with folding doors, its valuable Art Nouveau wrought iron details and, as counterpoint to the bold asymmetry of the station, the bland proto-Modern residential section adjoining."

The electoral district of Hawthorn is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first proclaimed in 1888 taking effect at the 1889 elections. The electorate is located to the east of Melbourne and centres on the suburb of Hawthorn, after which it is named. It also includes parts of Camberwell, Burwood and Glen Iris. It has usually been a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessors, having been held by a number of leaders and senior ministers. With the exception of two occasions when Liberal MPs defected and sat as independents, it has only been held by non-Liberal MPs three times in its history: independent Leslie Hollins from 1940 to 1945, Labor-turned-Labor (Anti-Communist) MP Charles Murphy from 1952 to 1955, and since 2018, when Labor candidate John Kennedy won the seat for the first time in 63 years in a major upset. Camberwell tram depot is located on Council Street, Hawthorn East, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Opened in December 1929, it is operated by Yarra Trams. It is one of eight tram depots on the Melbourne tram network.

Swinburne University of Technology (often simply called Swinburne) is a public research university based in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne to serve those without access to further education in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Its main campus is in Hawthorn, a suburb of Melbourne, 7.5 km from the Melbourne central business district.In addition to its main Hawthorn campus, it has campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area at Wantirna and Croydon; in Sarawak, Malaysia; and in Sydney.In the 2020 Student Experience Survey, Swinburne was ranked equal 1st place in Victoria for the ’entire education experience’ for undergraduate students, with an overall satisfaction rate of 80 per cent. Rivoli Cinemas (also known as Rivoli Theatre and New Rivoli Theatre) is an eight-screen multiplex in the Hawthorn East suburb of Melbourne. Noted for its Art Deco architecture, the cinema was first built in 1940, and reopened as a multiplex in 2000 following a renovation and expansion.

Carey Baptist Grammar School, commonly known as Carey, is an independent and co-educational Christian day school in Victoria, Australia. The institution consists of four campuses: Kew (ELC to Year 12), Donvale (ELC to Year 6), the Carey Sports Complex in Bulleen and an outdoor education camp near Paynesville in eastern Gippsland called Carey Toonallook. Founded in 1923, the school has a non-selective enrolment policy and currently caters for approximately 2,380 students from ELC to Year 12. Carey is affiliated with the Junior School Heads Association of Australia (JSHAA), the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV), and has been a member of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) since 1958. The school has offered the International Baccalaureate (IB) since June 1997.

The Victorian Telecommunications Museum was a small museum in the Hawthorn Telephone Exchange, Burwood Road, Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia. It housed historical telecommunications equipment that had been used by what originally was called the Postmaster-General's Department. The Department split in 1975 into Telecom Australia and Australia Post. In 1993 Telecom Australia was renamed Telstra after the merger of Telecom Australia and OTC (Overseas Telecommunications Corporation). A fraction of the thousands of items housed were on display for visitors. One was a working mini telephone exchange with four old phones that could call each other. The visitor watched the exchange manually step up and click around as the numbers are dialled. The phones had all the original dial tones and rings that were standard for this equipment. The exhibits included one of the original mechanical speaking clocks, made with rotating glass discs. This was one (number 2) of the four Mark II machines produced in England for use in Australia, which were received in Australia in the early 1950s. The discs were originally read using an exciter and a detector made with valve technology. These devices are no longer available and, because all the originals had failed, replacements had to be fashioned using digital technology adapted to plug into the original valve sockets. This development has enabled the speaking clock to be restored to full operation. The museum was managed by volunteers and closed at the end of 2019. A Mark II speaking clock is still on display at the Telstra Museum, Bankstown Sydney, 12 Kitchener Parade, next to the Bankstown Telephone Exchange, which is open to the public every Tuesday and Wednesday. This museum also is run by volunteers. The Brisbane Telstra Museum is at Albion Telephone Exchange, at the corner of Sandgate and Oriel Streets, Albion. Volunteers also run this site, which is open to the public every Wednesday.

The City of Hawthorn was a local government area about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) east of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia, on the southeast bank of the Yarra River. The city covered an area of 9.71 square kilometres (3.75 sq mi), and existed from 1860 until 1994.
