Thorney Abbey

Thorney is a village in the Peterborough unitary authority in the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire, England. Located around eight miles (13 km) east of Peterborough city centre, on the A47. Historically in the Isle of Ely, Thorney was transferred to the short-lived county of Huntingdon and Peterborough in 1965 and became part of the Peterborough district in 1974, on the merger into Cambridgeshire; the city became a unitary authority area in 1998.

Thorney railway station was a station in Thorney, Cambridgeshire on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway line between Peterborough and Wisbech.

Thorney was a rural district in England from 1894 to 1974, situated to the east of Peterborough. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894, covering the parishes of Thorney and Stanground. It was considered part of the administrative county of the Isle of Ely. In 1904 Stanground was split, with the new parish Stanground North remaining in the district (and Isle of Ely), while the remainder, Stanground South, became part of the Old Fletton Urban District in Huntingdonshire. In 1965, when Isle of Ely was merged with Cambridge to form Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely, Thorney RD was instead transferred to the administrative county of Huntingdon and Peterborough. In 1974, the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, its area going to form part of the Peterborough district, in the new non-metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire.

Wryde railway station was a station serving Wryde, Cambridgeshire on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway between Wisbech and Peterborough. Originally built by the Peterborough, Wisbech and Sutton Bridge Railway, it was opened for goods traffic on 1 June 1866 and for passengers on 1 August of the same year. There was no passing loop at this station until 1906 when one was installed as part of the general upgrading of the line made to improve the King's Cross, Peterborough, Sheringham and Cromer services run in collaboration with the Great Northern Railway. Passenger services were withdrawn on 2 December 1957, but goods trains travelling between Murrow and the brickworks at Dogsthorpe, near Peterborough, continued to pass through the station until 31 October 1965.

Bassenhally Pit is an 8.6-hectare (21-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire.This former gravel quarry has diverse habitats, such as a pond, marshes, grassland, scrub and woodland. The marsh is a nationally scarce habitat, and it has plants including jointed rush, creeping bent, lesser water-plantain, early marsh-orchid and water violet.The site is owned by the Whittlesey Wildfowlers and Conservationists, and there is no public access.

Nene Washes is a 1,522-hectare (3,760-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the bank of the River Nene east of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England. It is also a Ramsar internationally important wetland site, a Special Area of Conservation, a Special Protection Area and a Nature Conservation Review site. An area of 280 hectares (690 acres) is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The total area of the Ramsar site is 1,517 hectares (3,750 acres). This is described by Natural England as one of Britain's few remaining areas of washland which are vital for the survival of wildfowl and waders. It is used as a flood storage reservoir for the River Nene and is flooded for most of the winter and is pasture in the summer. It is important for birds all year. In the wintering wildfowl include wigeons, teals, pintails and Bewick's swans. In the breeding season the nesting species include common crane, black-tailed godwit, garganey and common snipe. The cranes also winter in the area and flock in nearby fields. They reserve is also good for birds of prey including Western marsh harrier, Eurasian hobby and short-eared owl. The rich flora in ditches include uncommon species such as frogbit, water violet and flowering rush. There is also an important population of spined loach in the drainage channels in and around the washes, and the presence of this species is one of the primary reasons for the site's designation as a Special Area of Conservation. There is access to the RSPB reserve immediately east of the B1040 road from Nene Way. The western end is private land with no public access.

Whittlesey Athletic Football Club is a football club based in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, England. They are currently members of the Eastern Counties League Division One North and play at Feldale Field.

Sir Harry Smith Community College is a secondary school in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Opened in 1953 on the former site of the Whittlesey Workhouse, the College is named after 19th Century English Army General Sir Harry Smith who was born in Whittlesey, and whose grave is situated in the cemetery adjacent to the school. The college, originally known simply as the Sir Harry Smith School, specialises in science and mathematics.

Whittlesey (also Whittlesea) is a market town and civil parish in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire, England. Whittlesey is 6 miles (10 km) east of Peterborough. The population of the parish was 17,667 at the 2021 Census.

Eastrea is a village in Cambridgeshire, located on the A605 between Whittlesey and Coates. The site has been inhabited since Roman times. The population is included in the civil parish of Whittlesey.

The Whittlesey Museum is a local history museum in Market Street, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, England. It is based on the ground floor of Whittlesey Town Hall, which is a Grade II listed building.

Whittlesey was a rural district in the Isle of Ely from 1894 to 1926. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Whittlesey rural sanitary district, and consisted of one civil parish – Whittlesey Rural.The parish and district entirely surrounded the urban district of Whittlesey, which contained the parish of Whittlesey Urban. The parish and district were both abolished in 1926, becoming part of the Whittlesey urban district and parish.
