Thorney Rural District

Bassenhally Pit is an 8.6-hectare (21-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire.This former gravel quarry has diverse habitats, such as a pond, marshes, grassland, scrub and woodland. The marsh is a nationally scarce habitat, and it has plants including jointed rush, creeping bent, lesser water-plantain, early marsh-orchid and water violet.The site is owned by the Whittlesey Wildfowlers and Conservationists, and there is no public access.

Sir Harry Smith Community College is a secondary school in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Opened in 1953 on the former site of the Whittlesey Workhouse, the College is named after 19th Century English Army General Sir Harry Smith who was born in Whittlesey, and whose grave is situated in the cemetery adjacent to the school. The college, originally known simply as the Sir Harry Smith School, specialises in science and mathematics.

Lattersey Field is an 11.9 hectare Local Nature Reserve in Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire. It is owned by Fenland District Council and managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.This former clay brick quarry has pits which have filled with water, and it has diverse habitats of grassland, woodland, scrub, pools, marshes and reedbeds. Mammals includes water voles, water shrews, and there are birds such as sedge warblers, tawny owls, woodcocks, great spotted woodpeckers and reed buntings.There is access from New Road, which bisects the site.

Whittlesey was a rural district in the Isle of Ely from 1894 to 1926. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Whittlesey rural sanitary district, and consisted of one civil parish – Whittlesey Rural.The parish and district entirely surrounded the urban district of Whittlesey, which contained the parish of Whittlesey Urban. The parish and district were both abolished in 1926, becoming part of the Whittlesey urban district and parish.

Whittlesea railway station is on the Ely–Peterborough line in the East of England and serves the market town of Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Whittlesea is an older and alternative spelling of the town's name.It is located in between March and Peterborough stations, 94 miles 60 chains (152.5 km) away from London Liverpool Street via Ely. All of the original station buildings have long since been demolished and only the two staggered platforms remain. Unlike most level crossings, the gates at Whittlesea station are still opened and closed manually by a member of railway staff, who is based in the adjacent crossing keeper's hut. On 14 September 1968, Flying Scotsman stopped at the station twice to have its tenders refilled with water. The locomotive was chartering The Chesterfield Flyer from Ipswich to Chesterfield, via Norwich.
