Whittlesey Museum

Whittlesey (also Whittlesea) is a market town and civil parish in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire, England. Whittlesey is 6 miles (10 km) east of Peterborough. The population of the parish was 17,667 at the 2021 Census.

Whittlesey was a rural district in the Isle of Ely from 1894 to 1926. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Whittlesey rural sanitary district, and consisted of one civil parish – Whittlesey Rural.The parish and district entirely surrounded the urban district of Whittlesey, which contained the parish of Whittlesey Urban. The parish and district were both abolished in 1926, becoming part of the Whittlesey urban district and parish.

Sir Harry Smith Community College is a secondary school in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Opened in 1953 on the former site of the Whittlesey Workhouse, the College is named after 19th Century English Army General Sir Harry Smith who was born in Whittlesey, and whose grave is situated in the cemetery adjacent to the school. The college, originally known simply as the Sir Harry Smith School, specialises in science and mathematics.

Whittlesea railway station is on the Ely–Peterborough line in the East of England and serves the market town of Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Whittlesea is an older and alternative spelling of the town's name.It is located in between March and Peterborough stations, 94 miles 60 chains (152.5 km) away from London Liverpool Street via Ely. All of the original station buildings have long since been demolished and only the two staggered platforms remain. Unlike most level crossings, the gates at Whittlesea station are still opened and closed manually by a member of railway staff, who is based in the adjacent crossing keeper's hut. On 14 September 1968, Flying Scotsman stopped at the station twice to have its tenders refilled with water. The locomotive was chartering The Chesterfield Flyer from Ipswich to Chesterfield, via Norwich.

Lattersey Field is an 11.9 hectare Local Nature Reserve in Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire. It is owned by Fenland District Council and managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.This former clay brick quarry has pits which have filled with water, and it has diverse habitats of grassland, woodland, scrub, pools, marshes and reedbeds. Mammals includes water voles, water shrews, and there are birds such as sedge warblers, tawny owls, woodcocks, great spotted woodpeckers and reed buntings.There is access from New Road, which bisects the site.

Whittlesey Athletic Football Club is a football club based in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, England. They are currently members of the Eastern Counties League Division One North and play at Feldale Field.

Bassenhally Pit is an 8.6-hectare (21-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire.This former gravel quarry has diverse habitats, such as a pond, marshes, grassland, scrub and woodland. The marsh is a nationally scarce habitat, and it has plants including jointed rush, creeping bent, lesser water-plantain, early marsh-orchid and water violet.The site is owned by the Whittlesey Wildfowlers and Conservationists, and there is no public access.

Thorney was a rural district in England from 1894 to 1974, situated to the east of Peterborough. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894, covering the parishes of Thorney and Stanground. It was considered part of the administrative county of the Isle of Ely. In 1904 Stanground was split, with the new parish Stanground North remaining in the district (and Isle of Ely), while the remainder, Stanground South, became part of the Old Fletton Urban District in Huntingdonshire. In 1965, when Isle of Ely was merged with Cambridge to form Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely, Thorney RD was instead transferred to the administrative county of Huntingdon and Peterborough. In 1974, the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, its area going to form part of the Peterborough district, in the new non-metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire.

Eastrea is a village in Cambridgeshire, located on the A605 between Whittlesey and Coates. The site has been inhabited since Roman times. The population is included in the civil parish of Whittlesey.

Eastrea railway station was a station serving the village of Eastrea, Cambridgeshire on the Great Eastern Railway's line from Ely to Peterborough. The station was situated at the level crossing on the road leading south from the village towards Benwick. Two miles east of the station was Three Horseshoes junction from where the Benwick goods railway headed south to Benwick.

Pondersbridge is a village in Whittlesey civil parish, part of the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire, England. Pondersbridge is essentially a settlement which has built up around the river crossing, situated on an artificial drainage cutting called Bevill's Leam. The banks of Bevill's Leam form a strong visual boundary. The older settlement has been extended on the Main Road, north-wards by the local authority housing. The settlement has very limited services and a sporadic development pattern. The main part of Pondersbridge is contained within a triangle of roads - the B1040, the B1095 (from Stanground) and The Drove. The village has a population of just over 200 people and in 1990 had 46 houses, with planning permission for 19 more.The eponymous bridge over the Leam is a minor waterways place on the Middle Level Navigations between Bevill's Leam Pumping Station and Angle Corner.Situated on the B1040 road, the village is home to the Church of St. Thomas. St. Thomas' Church was built in 1869 to replace a previous church in the village.Ordnance Survey maps from the 1920s show an agricultural tramway running from Bevills' Leam to the north east of the village to Engine Farm then south west and south east across Glass Fen. There is a village hall which hosts community events and has a wall-mounted defibrillator on an external wall. There was once a pub called The Green Man, which was in existence in 1916.

Part of a Bronze Age settlement was uncovered at Must Farm quarry, at Whittlesey, near Peterborough, in Cambridgeshire, England. The site has been described as "Britain's Pompeii" due to its relatively good condition, including the "best-preserved Bronze Age dwellings ever found" there, which all appear to have been abandoned suddenly following a catastrophic fire. Research now suggests that the site was less than one year old at the time of destruction.The site is on the bed of a now-defunct river in Flag Fen basin, around 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) south of Flag Fen itself. Must Farm was named Best Archaeological Project and Best Archaeological Discovery at the 2012 British Archaeological Awards, and Best Discovery at the 2016 Awards. An article describing the settlement won the Antiquity Prize 2020.
