Marcinelle

The N5 is a road in Belgium connecting the small ring in Brussels and Philippeville via Charleroi (commonly named French: Route de Philippeville till the ring of Charleroi). This road could be one of the deadliest of the country. This is not only due to the traffic density and the old fashioned road safety features, but also because many country roads are joining onto a high speed lane, namely the tractors harvesting sugar beet. It has also been part of the history of Belgium in the Battle of Waterloo, during which the Imperial French Army went through this path to join the battlefield of Quatre-Bras/LignyThe N5 crosses or borders 17 municipalities in total. 4 municipalities are located in the Brussels Capital Region, 1 in Flemish Brabant, 5 in Walloon Brabant, 4 in Hainaut and 3 in Namur. Tirou is a Charleroi Metro station, located in downtown Charleroi, in fare zone 1. Tirou is an open-air station located at street level (Rue de l'écluse) and offers same-platform bus transfer. The station's lateral platform are publicly accessible and serve as regular street sidewalks. The station and the nearby Tirou Boulevard are named after Joseph Tirou (1876–1952), a former Belgian politician and mayor of Charleroi.

Parc is a Charleroi Metro station, located in downtown Charleroi, in fare zone 1. It is an underground station with a central platform accessible from the street at both ends. Interior decoration, themed around the Lucky Luke Belgian comics character, features a fresco of the comics main characters on one side, and a short comics strip depicting a train attack by the Daltons on the other side. There's also a Lucky Luke statue outside of the station, near the park's eastern entrance. Until 26 February 2012 Parc was the terminus of former lines 55 and 88. Trams would arrive from Janson on the western side of the central platform, then move forward to a turnback siding in a short tunnel section south of the station, before returning to the station for departure on the eastern side of the platform. The turnback now forms part of the Parc to Tirou section. The station name (French for Park) comes from the adjacent municipal park.

Charleroi-Central railway station (French: Gare de Charleroi-Central, Dutch: Station Charleroi-Centraal) is the main railway station serving Charleroi, Hainaut, Belgium. It is operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB/NMBS). It was formerly called Charleroi-South railway station (French: Gare de Charleroi-Sud, Dutch: Station Charleroi-Zuid) until December 2022.Charleroi-Central is also the main TEC bus station in Charleroi, and a station of the Charleroi Metro.

Athénée Royal Vauban is a Francophone secondary school in Charleroi, Belgium. For much of its history it was a school for girls, originating from a private school opened by Mrs Dupuis in 1831. The royal decree of 26 Septembre 1881 created a state school for girls, Ecole Moyenne de l'Etat pour Demoiselles. It was officially designated a Royal Antheneum as per the Decree of the Regent of 27 August 1947. The preparatory section began having coeducational education in 1974, with coeducation affecting other portions by 1979. That year the school was renovated.

On 6 August 2016, a man attacked two policewomen with a machete in Charleroi, Belgium, before being shot dead by another police officer.

Janson is a Charleroi Metro station, located in downtown Charleroi, Belgium, in fare zone 1. It is an underground station featuring a central platform, with street access at both ends. Interior decoration, designed by architect Jean Yernaux, is themed around the Belgian comics characters from Dupuis Publishing, a well-known Belgian comics publishing company based in Marcinelle (part of the Charleroi municipality). The station and the nearby Paul Janson Boulevard are named after Belgian politician Paul Janson.

The Digue Square and Digue Street are located in the lower town of Charleroi, Belgium. The triangular-shaped square rises from Dampremy Street in the east to Grand Central Street in the west. Before the works, it was a paved parking lot; since May 2014, it has been a pedestrian space above an underground parking lot. The street climbs from Digue Square towards Alliés Avenue, a little further north.

Villette is a Charleroi Metro station, located at the southwestern end of Charleroi downtown, in fare zone 1. It was the first metro station in Belgium to be built on a viaduct, spanning over the river Sambre. The station is accessible from both banks of the river and features a central platform serving two tram tracks. Villette station is particularly close (300 m) to the Sud station.

The Battle of Thiméon was a Frankish victory over the Vikings near Thiméon (near modern Charleroi, Wallonia) north of the Sambre in February 880. In 879, Vikings from England settled on the river Scheldt. After celebrating Christmas at Frankfurt am Main that year and signing the Treaty of Ribemont with Louis III and Carloman II of West Francia, Louis the Younger of East Francia marched an army northward on the Viking settlement. The battle was a rout for the Vikings, 5,000 of whom were killed, but the Frankish king also sustained a heavy loss: his only surviving son, the illegitimate Hugh, was killed in action.

The Battle of Charleroi (French: Bataille de Charleroi) or the Battle of the Sambre, was fought on 21 August 1914, by the French Fifth Army and the German 2nd and 3rd armies, during the Battle of the Frontiers. The French were planning an attack across the Sambre River, when the Germans attacked first, forced back the French from the river and nearly cut off the French retreat by crossing the Meuse River around Dinant and getting behind the French right flank. The French were saved by a counter-attack at Dinant and the re-direction of the 3rd Army to the north-west in support of the 2nd Army, rather than south-west.

Dampremy (Walloon: Dårmè) is a town of Wallonia and district of the municipality of Charleroi, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It was a municipality of its own before the fusion of the Belgian municipalities in 1977.
