Old River Bed, Shrewsbury is a Site of Special Scientific Interest located two miles north of Shrewsbury town centre, to the east of the A528 in Shropshire, England. It is currently owned and managed by Shrewsbury Town Council. The site is designated as a SSSI as it forms part of the former bed of the River Severn, which has been cut off from the main course of the river since the last glaciation. The Old River Bed is of particular value for the extensive sedge fen which now fills this cut-off meander of the River Severn. Although differing in its mode of origin, the Old River Bed is complementary to other wetland sites in North Shropshire. Wetland plant species found at the Old River Bed include: Lesser pond-sedge - Carex acutiformis Common reed - Phragmites australis Great reedmace - Typha latifolia Water horsetail - Equisetum fluviatile Meadowsweet - Filipendula ulmaria Soft rush - Juncus effusus Sharp-flowered rush - J. acutiflorus Water avens - Geum rivale Bottle sedge - Carex rostrata Brown sedge - C. disticha Marsh cinquefoil - Potentilla palustris

Heathgates is a small suburb and the name of a notable roundabout in Shrewsbury, England; it is also the name for a short stretch of the A5191 road leading up to the roundabout, the wetlands found just off Telford Way nearby. Along with the Old Heath estate and the homes along First Avenue and First Terrace, it is also the name of the residential neighborhood and suburb that is close to the roundabout. There is a public house north of the roundabout, named The Heathgates. The roundabout is the junction of Whitchurch Road (the A5112, historically the A49), Sundorne Road (the B5062), Telford Way (the A5112), and Heathgates (the A5191 towards Shrewsbury town centre).

Ditherington is a suburb of the town of Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, England. It is the fourth most deprived ward in the Shropshire unitary authority area. There has been much regeneration work in the southern part of Ditherington, which is close to Shrewsbury town centre. Various residential developments have occurred, but little has been finished.

Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd was a British company based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire that made steam-powered lorries (steam wagons), railway locomotives, and later, diesel engined lorries, buses and locomotives.

Ditherington Flax Mill (promoted as the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings), a flax mill located in Ditherington, a suburb of Shrewsbury, England, is the first iron-framed building in the world, and described as "the grandfather of skyscrapers", despite its five-storey height. Its importance was officially recognised in the 1950s, resulting in it becoming a Grade I listed building. It is also locally known as the "Maltings" from its later use. The mill is in the hands of Historic England and is currently in use as a mixed-use workspace and exhibition following its official opening in 2022.

Underdale is a district of the town of Shrewsbury, county town of Shropshire, England. It is situated between the suburbs of Monkmoor and Castlefields, and stretches from Shrewsbury Abbey to the Telford Way, which is situated towards the north of the town. Underdale Road runs parallel to Monkmoor Road and is roughly the same length. The suburb is an electoral district of Shropshire Council. It is currently a Liberal Democrat held ward. The population of the ward as taken at the 2011 Census was 4,495.The River Severn flows around the western edge of the area.

The Coton Hill rail crash was a train crash which occurred on 11 January 1965, at Coton Hill, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, England. It happened when a heavily loaded freight train ran out of control on the 1 in 100 Hencote incline, and was derailed on a set of trap points, eventually demolishing a signal box. The signalman on duty was killed, and the driver of the train seriously injured.

The Bagley Brook is a small watercourse that flows into the River Severn at Shrewsbury in Shropshire, England. Its course has been severely altered by urban development in the area, such that the brook is now little known or seen. However its name is used for an official area name - Bagley - which is an electoral division of the county council and a ward of the town council. The brook follows to some extent the old course of the River Severn which was cut off from the course of the Severn at the last glaciation period. When the River Severn floods in a severe way, such as in November 2000, the area around the Bagley Brook also floods (about 20 hectares (49 acres)).In present times, the watercourse starts roughly where the Ellesmere Road (the A528) crosses the old course of the Severn, and runs through the marshy area at first in a southeasterly direction, then a southerly direction. This area has been designated as an SSSI under the name Old River Bed, Shrewsbury.It then runs through a cutting to the east of the Shrewsbury–Crewe railway line, eventually passing between a new housing development ("Ellesmere Grange") and a coal yard. It then enters a long underground culvert. The water discharges into the Severn at Chester Street, where the Gateway public building is, between Coton Hill and the town centre. Historically there was a bridge to carry the road over the brook, but the watercourse now flows through a culvert from the north of the Shrewsbury–Chester railway line straight into the river and cannot now be seen at Chester Street.

Bagley is an area of Shrewsbury, county town of Shropshire. It is part urban, part rural and extends out from the town centre in a northwest direction. Though not clearly defined, it is often regarded as including Coton Hill, Greenfields and Gravelhill. The Shropshire Agricultural Showground is located between Coton Hill and Gravelhill. Bagley is a Shropshire Council electoral division, which until 2009 included Coton Hill and the town centre of Shrewsbury. It now covers a smaller area, though includes the northern half of the Mount Pleasant housing estate. The same area covered by the electoral division also forms the town council ward of Bagley. It is named after the Bagley Brook which flows through the area and into the River Severn at Chester Street. Parts of the area are prone to flooding. On a small estate in the area named Herongate the positioning of the old river can be seen. As of 2009 a new housing development ("Ellesmere Grange") is taking place on former railway land off Ellesmere Road. In future further housing development is expected to take place in the Bagley area, on both brownfield and greenfield land.

Castle Walk Footbridge spans the River Severn in Shrewsbury, England, and was the first prestressed concrete bridge in Shropshire. The footbridge was completed in November 1951, and built using balanced cantilever construction, with two cantilever sections and a central suspended span. The total central span is 150 ft. It was designed by L.G. Mouchel and Partners and built by Taylor Woodrow. It links the Castlefields area of the town to the northwest with the Cherry Orchard/Underdale part of town to the southeast.

Coton Hill is an historic suburb of the town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, situated in the ancient parish of St Mary (with a small enclave of the parish of St Julian in Greenfields). The River Severn flows nearby to the west, whilst Bagley Brook, the original river bed of the Severn runs to the east.

The Shrewsbury rail accident occurred on 15 October 1907. An overnight sleeping-car and mail train from Manchester to the West of England derailed on the sharply curved approach to Shrewsbury station, killing 18 people and injuring 33. The accident was concluded to be due to excessive speed on a dangerous curve.
