His, Agder

Hisøy (historically: Hisø) is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. The 10-square-kilometre (3.9 sq mi) municipality existed from 1881 until 1992 when it was merged into the municipality of Arendal in what is now Agder county. At the time of its dissolution, it was the smallest municipality in the whole county. The municipality encompassed the islands of Hisøya, Gjervoldsøy, Havsøya, Ærøya, Store Torungen, Lille Torungen, and several other small, unpopulated islands. The administrative centre was the village of Kolbjørnsvik on Hisøya island.Hisøy Church was the main church for the municipality, located in the village of His in the central part of Hisøya.

Hisøy Church (Norwegian: Hisøy kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Arendal Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of His on the island of Hisøya. It is one of the churches for the Hisøy parish which is part of the Arendal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden, empire style church was built in a cruciform design in 1849 using plans drawn up by the architect Gustav Adolph Lammers. The church seats about 500 people. From 1881 until 1992 it was the main church for Hisøy municipality.

Hisøya or Hisøy (historically: Hisøen) is an island in Agder county, Norway. The island has been part of the municipality of Arendal since 1992. The main village areas on the island are Kolbjørnsvik, His, Slåbervig, and Sandviga. The village of Kolbjørnsvik is located across the harbor from the town of Arendal. There are two bridges that connect Hisøya to the mainland: the Strøm Bridge on the northwest side of the island and the Vippa Bridge on the southwest side of the island. In 2015, the island was home to about 4,450 people giving it a population density of about 550 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,400/sq mi). The 8.1-square-kilometre (3.1 sq mi) island lies along the Skaggerak coast of southeastern Norway. Hisøya is separated from the mainland to the northwest by the river Nidelv. The island of Tromøya lies to the northeast, separated from Hisøya by the Galtesundet strait. The small islands of Ærøya, Havsøya, and Merdø lie just to the southeast of Hisøya. The highest point on Hisøya is the 99-metre (325 ft) tall hill on the edge of Kolbjørnsvik.

The Capture of Arendal occurred on 9 April 1940 and saw the German torpedo boat Greif land a force of bicycle troops and seize an invasion beachhead at the Norwegian port town of Arendal. The main aim of the landing, part of the German invasion of Norway, was to sever the undersea telegraph cable between Arendal and the United Kingdom. The German force landed unopposed, with the Norwegian torpedo boat based in the town choosing to evacuate rather than take up the fight against the surprising arrival of the Germans. The Norwegian naval commander cited concern for civilian casualties and a glum view of his chances as reasons for not resisting. While the initial German occupation of Arendal took place without serious incident, panic broke out the following day and led to many civilians abandoning the town, following unfounded rumours of an incoming British bomber raid. Five days after the German occupation of Arendal, the town saw the establishment of the first organized resistance group in Norway. The Arendal Group operated from 14 April 1940 until crushed by the Gestapo four months later.

Ærøya is an unpopulated island in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The 0.12-square-kilometre (30-acre) island lies along the Skaggerak coast about 700 metres (2,300 ft) south of the larger island of Hisøya. The islands of Havsøya and Merdø lie to the northeast, the islands of Store Torungen and Lille Torungen lie to the southeast, and the island of Gjervoldsøy lies to the west.

Nidelva is the main river in the Arendal drainage basin in Agder county, Norway. The 221.7-kilometre (137.8 mi) long river begins at the confluence of two rivers: Nisserelva and Fyreselv. The confluence is located by the village of Haugsjåsund in Nissedal municipality in southern Vestfold og Telemark county. The river flows south into the Skagerrak at the city of Arendal. The watershed covers 4,011 square kilometres (1,549 sq mi) and has an average waterflow of 114.4 cubic metres per second (4,040 cu ft/s) at Rykene near the mouth. The highest waterflow ever recorded on the river was 1,200 cubic metres per second (42,000 cu ft/s) in the autumn of 1987.

Norwegian county road 407 (Fylkesvei 407) is a Norwegian county road in Agder county, Norway. The 13.9-kilometre (8.6 mi) highway runs between the village of Vik in Grimstad municipality and Sponvika on the south side of the city of Arendal in Arendal municipality. Prior to the transportation reforms of 2010, this road was a Norwegian national road, but since then it was taken over by the county.

Rød or Røed is a village in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The village is located at the mouth of the river Nidelva on the southwest side of the river, across the river from the villages of Asdal and Vrengen. The village lies along the Norwegian County Road 420, which leads north to the village of His on the island of Hisøya to the north, and the road leads south to the village of Nedenes and onwards to the municipality of Grimstad.

Vrengen is a village in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The village is located in the Bjorbekk area of Arendal, along the Norwegian County Road 407, just north of the mouth of the river Nidelva. The Bjorbekk Church lies just northwest of Vrengen and the village of Asdal lies just to the south.

Kolbjørnsvik is a village in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The village is located on the northern part of the island of Hisøya, across the harbour from the town of Arendal. The village of His and the Hisøy Church lie about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) south of Kolbjørnsvik. The former municipality of Hisøy had its municipal government located in this village. Today, the village is considered to be part of the town of Arendal, so separate population statistics are not kept.

Torbjørnsbu Station (Norwegian: Torbjørnsbu stoppested) is a former railway station at Torbjørnsbu in Arendal, Norway. Located on the Arendal Line, it was operated by the Norwegian State Railways. The station was opened on 1 May 1911 and originally consisted of a station building and a loading spur. The station remained staffed until 1939 and was later closed.

Arendal Airport, Rådhuskaien (Norwegian: Arendal flyvehavn, Rådhuskaien) was a water aerodrome in Arendal, Norway, which operated between 1935 and 1939. Situated at Rådhuskaien, it served the scheduled coastal seaplane service operated by Norwegian Air Lines.
