Ærøya

The Capture of Arendal occurred on 9 April 1940 and saw the German torpedo boat Greif land a force of bicycle troops and seize an invasion beachhead at the Norwegian port town of Arendal. The main aim of the landing, part of the German invasion of Norway, was to sever the undersea telegraph cable between Arendal and the United Kingdom. The German force landed unopposed, with the Norwegian torpedo boat based in the town choosing to evacuate rather than take up the fight against the surprising arrival of the Germans. The Norwegian naval commander cited concern for civilian casualties and a glum view of his chances as reasons for not resisting. While the initial German occupation of Arendal took place without serious incident, panic broke out the following day and led to many civilians abandoning the town, following unfounded rumours of an incoming British bomber raid. Five days after the German occupation of Arendal, the town saw the establishment of the first organized resistance group in Norway. The Arendal Group operated from 14 April 1940 until crushed by the Gestapo four months later.

Hisøy Church (Norwegian: Hisøy kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Arendal Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of His on the island of Hisøya. It is one of the churches for the Hisøy parish which is part of the Arendal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden, empire style church was built in a cruciform design in 1849 using plans drawn up by the architect Gustav Adolph Lammers. The church seats about 500 people. From 1881 until 1992 it was the main church for Hisøy municipality.

The 8.1-square-kilometre (3.1 sq mi) island lies along the Skaggerak coast of southeastern Norway. Hisøya is separated from the mainland to the northwest by the river Nidelv. The island of Tromøya lies to the northeast, separated from Hisøya by the Galtesundet strait. The small islands of Ærøya, Havsøya, and Merdø lie just to the southeast of Hisøya. The highest point on Hisøya is the 99-metre (325 ft) tall hill on the edge of Kolbjørnsvik.

The 0.3-square-kilometre (74-acre) island lies along the Skagerrak coast, near the entrance to the Galtesundet, the main shipping channel leading to the town of Arendal on the mainland. The islands of Tromøy and Hisøya lie to the north and northwest. The small islands of Ærøya and Havsøya lie to the southwest. A part of the island is included in Raet National Park.

Kolbjørnsvik is a village in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The village is located on the northern part of the island of Hisøya, across the harbour from the town of Arendal. The village of His and the Hisøy Church lie about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) south of Kolbjørnsvik. The former municipality of Hisøy had its municipal government located in this village. Today, the village is considered to be part of the town of Arendal, so separate population statistics are not kept.

SS Martti Ragnar was a Finnish steam freighter own by Ragnar Nordström and named after his son Martti-Ragnar Nordström. In 1939, while carrying a cargo of cellulose, sulfite and woodpulp from Kemi to Ellesmere Port in England, she was sunk by U-4 on 22 September in Skagerrak.

Revesand is a village in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The village is located at the southern coast of the island of Tromøy, about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north of the island outport of Merdø.

Brattekleiv is a village in Arendal municipality in Agder county, Norway. The village is located along the Galtesundet strait on the southwestern shore of the island of Tromøy. The village lies about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) southwest of the town of Arendal which is located across the strait. The smaller industrial village of Pusnes lies immediately north of Brattekleiv, the small village of Revesand lies just south of the village, and the village of Færvik lies a short distance to the east.
