Northside (East Chicago)

Southside or South Side is a neighborhood in western East Chicago, Indiana. Together with Northside and Roxana, it makes up "East Chicago proper," as distinct from Indiana Harbor. The population is 64% Hispanic and 25% African American. The neighborhood is home to 20% of East Chicago's population. The neighborhood is dominated by residential properties, with relatively few institutional buildings.Southside is bounded on the north by the commercial corridor along Chicago Avenue (Indiana State Road 312), and on the south by the Grand Calumet River. To the east, the residential area is bounded by Indianapolis Boulevard; beyond that lies the industrial district along the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. To the west, Southside adjoins North Hammond. Southside was the site of the very first home built in East Chicago, that of William H. Penman (later East Chicago's first mayor), built in 1888. Most of the residential development in East Chicago's first decades, prior to the 20th century, took place in this neighborhood.

Bishop Noll Institute is a private, Roman Catholic high school in Hammond, Indiana. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gary.

New Addition, also called West Harbor, is a small triangular neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, west of Kennedy Avenue, east of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, and north of United States Route 12. As of 2013, it was home to approximately 263 people.Like several other East Chicago neighborhoods including Marktown and Roxana, New Addition is wholly surrounded by industrial land,. It is home to a small park, a community center, and a branch campus of Ivy Tech Community College.Built in the early 20th century, the neighborhood originally provided housing for steelworkers in the nearby mills, particularly American Steel Foundries. In the 1920s, it was one of the few neighborhoods available to African American residents in East Chicago. As a result, it was targeted in 1959 for demolition in the name of urban renewal. The neighborhood was saved from demolition by local activists including Rev. Vincent L. McCutcheon.The view from much of the neighborhood is dominated by petroleum storage tanks associated with the Whiting Refinery.

The Brickyard was a neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, near the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and Gannister Court. It stood for much of the 20th century, housing approximately 30 primarily African American families, until the City of East Chicago demolished it in the mid-1990s due to contamination from the adjacent Pollution Control Industries (PCI) hazardous waste mixing facility.

East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Marktown, Clayton Mark's planned worker community.

North Township is one of 11 townships in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 162,855 and it contained 67,828 housing units.

Roxana, sometimes spelled Roxanna, is a neighborhood in southwestern East Chicago, Indiana, south of the Grand Calumet River and north of Michigan Street. It is the only East Chicago neighborhood located south of the Grand Calumet. As of 2013, it was home to approximately 1032 people, of whom 6.5% were Hispanic and 8% were African American.Roxana is adjoined on the north by East Chicago's Southside neighborhood, to the east by the industrial area of Hammond north of Hessville, on the south by Hammond's Woodmar neighborhood and the Gibson Yard, and on the west by Central Hammond. The neighborhood is traversed by the Indiana Toll Road and by the South Shore Line passenger railroad, which stops in Roxana at the East Chicago station. Roxana takes its name from Roxana Petroleum, an oil company later absorbed by Shell Oil, which built a major refinery adjacent to the neighborhood in 1927. The refinery proper was located in Hammond (just south of United States Route 20), while the associated tank farm was located in Roxana. A pipeline carried sulfuric acid from the Grasselli Chemical plant to the refinery. The Shell and Roxana oil companies are remembered today in the names of the neighborhood's Roxana Drive and Shell Street. Roxana is home to the Roxana Marsh, an important natural area and migrant bird habitat along the Grand Calumet River. Birds found there range from moorhens to Hudsonian godwits. The restoration of the Roxana Marsh, which was completed in 2013, involved the removal of six hundred thousand cubic yards of sediment contaminated with PCBs, PAHs, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

Hammond ( HAM-ənd) is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area, and the only city in Indiana to border Chicago. First settled in the mid-19th century, it is one of the oldest cities of northern Lake County. As of the 2020 United States census, it is also the largest in population: the 2020 population was 77,879, replacing Gary as the most populous city in Lake County. From north to south, Hammond runs from Lake Michigan down to the Little Calumet River; from east to west along its southern border, it runs from the Illinois state line to Cline Avenue. The city is traversed by numerous railroads and expressways, including the South Shore Line, Borman Expressway, and Indiana Toll Road. Notable local landmarks include the parkland around Wolf Lake and the Horseshoe Hammond riverboat casino. Part of the Rust Belt, Hammond has been industrial almost from its inception, but is also home to a Purdue University campus and numerous historic districts that showcase the residential and commercial architecture of the early 20th century.

The U.S. Smelting and Lead Refinery Inc. site, commonly known as USS Lead, is a superfund site located in East Chicago, which is located in northwest Indiana. The site includes part of the former USS Lead facility along with nearby commercial, municipal, and residential areas. Originally the site was used as a lead ore refinery with the surrounding businesses at the time performing similar operations. Through a history of redlining and racial discrimination brought on by the 1920 Urban Renewal Campaign, it is seen that East Chicago’s minority community is subject to the consequences of the contamination and has led to claims of environmental racism. The primary contaminants of concern for this area are lead and arsenic, both of which when in the human bloodstream, cause numerous health effects. The site is currently undergoing testing and remediation. This Superfund site is broken down into two Operable Units. The first, OU1, has been divided into three zones, these being the public housing complex and residential properties. OU2 includes soil at the former USS Lead facility, as well as groundwater in and around the site.

Marktown is an urban planned worker community in East Chicago, Indiana, United States, built during the Progressive Era in 1917 from marshland to provide a complete community for workers at The Mark Manufacturing Company.The Marktown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

North Hammond is a neighborhood in western Hammond, Indiana, north of the Grand Calumet River and south of Wolf Lake. It is bounded to the south by Central Hammond, to the west by the Chicago neighborhood of Hegewisch, to the north by Robertsdale, and to the east by East Chicago. The neighborhood's boundaries correspond to Hammond's Planning District II. The neighborhood is traversed by the Indiana Toll Road, which has an exit into the neighborhood at Calumet Avenue, and by the South Shore Line railroad. Passenger trains for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District stop at Hammond Station in the neighborhood. The land area of North Hammond is dominated by industrial land uses. Residential uses are found chiefly south of the Indiana Toll Road. The greatest concentration of commercial activity is along Calumet Avenue, the neighborhood's principal north-south thoroughfare.North Hammond is sometimes considered to include Robertsdale, thus embracing all of Hammond from the Grand Calumet River to Lake Michigan.

State Bank of Hammond Building is a historic bank building located at 5444-5446 Calumet Avenue in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. It was built in 1927, and was designed by Chicago architects Vitzthum & Burns. It is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick, concrete, and steel building on a full basement. The front facade is faced in terra cotta and features a colossal entry portico with two engaged square columns and two fluted round columns. The Northern States Life Insurance Company ceased operation in 1931, and the building subsequently housed the Calumet State Bank from 1933 until 1935, and later a license bureau and other retail and office uses.: 2, 4 It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
