Kelham Island Museum

The River Don Engine is a 1904-built steam engine used for hot rolling steel armour plate. It is a 3-cylinder simple engine of 40 inches (1.0 m) diameter, 48 inches (1.2 m) stroke. At its operating steam pressure of 160psi, it developed 12,000 horsepower (8.9 MW), and was able to reverse from full speed in 2 seconds. The rapid reverse was an essential feature of an engine used for rolling, as delays would result in cooling of the workpiece. This engine was one of four built to the same design, one going overseas to the Japanese Government, one to John Brown's Atlas plant, and the destination of the final one being William Beardmore of Glasgow. It is claimed to be one of the most powerful steam engines ever built, and the most powerful remaining in Europe.The River Don Engine worked for over 50 years at Cammell's mill before being moved first to British Steel's River Don plant (hence its name) and then in 1978 to its present home at the Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield. The engine was last used for commercial work in the 1970s, to roll out reactor shield plates for nuclear power plants. The engine is normally regularly demonstrated at the museum, without load, and under 100 psi of steam pressure. It had to be taken out of service following the floods of July 2007, which extensively damaged the museum and parts of the engine, but was restored to working order in 2008.

The Kelham Island Brewery was a small independent brewery based in the Kelham Island Quarter area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It closed down in May 2022. In 1990 the brewery was opened (the first for 100 years to open in Sheffield) on purpose-built premises on Alma Street by the owner of the Fat Cat public house, Dave Wickett. As well as the Fat Cat, the brewery owns a British-styled pub in Rochester, New York (United States), named the Old Toad.Its beer Pale Rider won the "Champion Beer of Britain" award at the 2004 Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) organised Great British Beer Festival.The brewery is situated next to the Kelham Island Industrial Museum.

The Kelham Island Tavern is a public house in Sheffield. It is the only pub to have become the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) National Pub of the Year two years running. The pub lies on Russell Street, in the Kelham Island area of the city. It was constructed in the 1830s as part of a terrace, and originally operated as "The Sawmaker". It was later renamed the "White Hart", and in the early 1990s became the "Kelham Island Tavern", but closed soon after. The derelict building was re-opened as the "Kelham Island Tavern" in 2002, specialising in real ales. By the following year, the local press mentioned it as one of five pubs in the area among the "best real ale pubs in Yorkshire". Following an inundation during the 2007 United Kingdom floods, it closed for a five-week refurbishment. It won the CAMRA pub of the year award for 2008, and took the title again the following year, becoming the first pub to win the title two years running. It has also won the Yorkshire Pub of the Year title in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009, and the Sheffield Pub of the Year award every year from 2004 to 2011 and later from 2013 to 2018.The pub has a small garden featuring palm trees, and is also a venue for traditional English folk music.

Kelham Island is one of Sheffield's eleven designated Quarters. Formerly an industrial area, the island itself was created by the building of a goit, or mill race, fed from the River Don to serve the water wheels powering the workshops of the areas' industrial heyday. The quarter was named after the island, however, the boundaries extend beyond the physical island created by the river and goit. The Quarter is roughly diamond in shape, and is bordered by Shalesmoor and Gibraltar Street to the south-west; Corporation Street to the south-east; Mowbray Street, Harvest Lane and Neepsend Lane to the north-east, and Ball Street and Cornish Street to the north-west. The Cornish Place Works sit just outside this quarter, to the north-west. Green Lane and Alma Street form the main spine roads of the area. The Green Lane Works (Grade II* listed) and the Brooklyn Works (Grade II listed) are both important industrial heritage sites. A great deal of urban regeneration is evident in this area, as residential and social uses are mixed into this former industrial area. The area is home to an industrial museum, the Kelham Island Museum, including the famous River Don Engine. The Chimney House for events and occasions and five pubs: the Kelham Island Tavern (twice CAMRA National Pub of the Year), the Fat Cat, The Wellington, the Ship Inn and The Milestone. It is also host to the Kelham Island Brewery (brewers of Pale Rider, amongst others). The area is the only area in Sheffield with its own dedicated app This Is Kelham that supports independent businesses, regeneration and aids the funding of community projects. The Quarter housed one of Sheffield's last traditional hand-made scissor makers, Ernest Wright and Son Limited, until their relocation to premises closer to the city centre in 2011.

The Green Lane Works are a disused industrial facility situated in the City of Sheffield, England. The entrance gate to the works is particularly ornate and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building. Nikolaus Pevsner called the gate “the most spectacular survival of factory architecture in the city”. The works are situated in the suburb of Neepsend within the Kelham Island Quarter of the city and date from 1795 although there were extensive alterations in 1860.

The Brooklyn Works is a former site of steel, saw and file manufacture, it is situated on Green Lane in the Kelham Island Quarter of the City of Sheffield, England. In recent years the works have been converted into residential apartments and offices. The structure is a Grade II listed building because of its importance as an example of Sheffield’s industrial heritage. The works stand adjacent to the listed industrial buildings of the Green Lane Works and Cornish Place in what has been called, “the most coherent stretch of industrial landscape in inner Sheffield”

Yellow Arch Studios is a recording studio in situated in the heart of Kelham Island and Neepsend, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. “Internally, the building includes a state-of-the art recording studio and rehearsal rooms”, the building also has a 200 capacity venue, a large warehouse, courtyard and Moroccan style Café Bar. Yellow Arch Studios featured as an official venue for the Tramlines Festival until the festival was moved out of the city centre to Hillsborough Park in 2018. It is also the official exam centre for Practical and Jazz Theory examinations for ABRSM in South Yorkshire.

Cornish Place is a listed building situated in the Neepsend area of the City of Sheffield. The building was formerly the factory of James Dixon & Sons, a Britannia metal, Sheffield plate and Cutlery manufacturer. In the late 1990s the disused building was cleaned and converted into apartments, it is regarded as the most impressive cutlery works that still stands in Sheffield and rivals the cotton mills of Lancashire and the West Riding in terms of architectural quality and heritage. The most impressive parts of the building are the east and west ranges which have Grade II* listed status while the rest of the works have the lower Grade II rating. The "Cornish" in the buildings name is thought to derive from the manufacture of Britannia metal which is made up of 93% tin which came from Cornwall.

The National Emergency Services Museum is a museum in Sheffield, England. Opened on 8 May 1984 as the Sheffield Fire and Police Museum, it was given its present name on 1 January 2014.

The School Room is a rock climbing training facility in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The facility was originally built in 1993 by Gavin Ellis, Ben Tye and Andy Coish, as conditions at Peak District Limestone venues (at which they trained) were not always ideal. The facility was made famous by its reputation for its extremely difficult problems. Many notable international rock climbers were trained at The School Room, including Ben Moon, Malcolm Smith, Jerry Moffatt and Richard Simpson.The School Room received its name from the fact that its original location, in the Heeley Bank School community centre, formed a portion of an old school building. Another portion of the building was used for an art studio. The facility consisted of four plywood climbing walls, which are covered with wooden and plastic holds, at angles of between 15 and 52 degrees.In 2006, the School Room was under threat of closure and Sheffield City Council had asked all users of the centre to vacate the premises . Despite a successful petition was established to save the facility, the original School Room closed in 2006, but was reopened with the same walls in a different warehouse space in 2014 by Moon.

The Sheffield Law Courts is a Crown Court venue, which deals with criminal cases, as well as a County Court venue, which deals with civil cases, in West Bar in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.
