Martinsried is one of Munich's two science suburbs. It is a section of Planegg municipality in the district of Munich in Bavaria, Germany. Martinsried is best known as the location of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology and the accompanying biotechnology campus, which actually straddles the Munich/Planegg border. The campus is adjacent to the Großhadern hospital campus, housing most of the Faculty of Medicine of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. The Faculty of Chemistry and a part of the Biology Faculty of the university also relocated to this new campus in 1999 and 2005. Munich's other "science suburb" is Garching, situated to the north on the opposite end of the U6 subway, with a large part of the Technische Universität München and several Max Planck Institutes.

Freiham is a district in the Munich borough of Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied, in the west of Munich, Germany. The district is the location of a large development scheme consisting primarily of housing estates as well as small commercial-use buildings. The town is connected to Munich by Munich S-Bahn at München Freiham railway station, which opened in 2009.

The Institute was founded in 1973 by the merger of three formerly independent institutes: the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, the Max Planck Institute of Protein and Leather Research (founded 1954 in Regensburg), and the Max Planck Institute of Cell Chemistry (founded 1956 in Munich).With 800 employees in currently seven research departments and about 26 research groups, the MPIB is one of the largest biologically-medically oriented institutes of the Max Planck Society.

Research centers on the basic mechanisms and functions of the developing and adult nervous system. Main focus areas include the mechanisms of information processing and storage. It is one of 80 institutes in the Max Planck Society (Max Planck Gesellschaft).

The Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence (German: Max-Planck-Institut für biologische Intelligenz; abbreviated MPI-BI) is a non-university research institute of the Max Planck Society (MPG). The institute is dedicated to basic research on topics in behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology and neuroscience. Research at the international institute focuses on how animal organisms acquire, store, apply and pass on knowledge about their environment in order to find ever-new solutions to problems and adapt to a constantly changing environment. Model organisms include Drosophila, zebrafish, mice and various bird species.
