Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology

The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB) is a research institute of the Max Planck Society located in Martinsried, a suburb of Munich. The Institute was founded in 1973 by the merger of three formerly independent institutes: the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, the Max Planck Institute of Protein and Leather Research (founded 1954 in Regensburg), and the Max Planck Institute of Cell Chemistry (founded 1956 in Munich).With 800 employees in currently seven research departments and about 26 research groups, the MPIB is one of the largest biologically-medically oriented institutes of the Max Planck Society.

The Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence (German: Max-Planck-Institut für biologische Intelligenz; abbreviated MPI-BI) is a non-university research institute of the Max Planck Society (MPG). The institute is dedicated to basic research on topics in behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology and neuroscience. Research at the international institute focuses on how animal organisms acquire, store, apply and pass on knowledge about their environment in order to find ever-new solutions to problems and adapt to a constantly changing environment. Model organisms include Drosophila, zebrafish, mice and various bird species.

Martinsried is one of Munich's two science suburbs. It is a section of Planegg municipality in the district of Munich in Bavaria, Germany. Martinsried is best known as the location of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology and the accompanying biotechnology campus, which actually straddles the Munich/Planegg border. The campus is adjacent to the Großhadern hospital campus, housing most of the Faculty of Medicine of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. The Faculty of Chemistry and a part of the Biology Faculty of the university also relocated to this new campus in 1999 and 2005. Munich's other "science suburb" is Garching, situated to the north on the opposite end of the U6 subway, with a large part of the Technische Universität München and several Max Planck Institutes.

The Klinikum Großhadern of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) in the Großhadern district of Hadern is the largest hospital complex in Munich, owing to its affiliated institutions and 1,940 beds. In 1994 the new buildings of the Genzentrum (gene center) belonging to the LMU were put into operation and in 1999 the entire chemical/pharmaceutical faculty was relocated to the HighTech CampusLMU in Hadern. After the merger with the Klinikum Innenstadt, the building forms one of the largest hospital complexes in Germany. Since this merger, the exact definition of the complex is LMU Klinikum - Campus Großhadern. The organ transplantation department of the clinic is one of the leading organ transplantation clinics in Germany. All clinically established forms of organ transplantation are implemented, e.g. Heart, Heart & Lung (simultaneously), Lungs (one or two) Pancreas, Kidney and Pancreas & Kidney simultaneously. Aside from patient care the clinic also plays an important role in clinical and theoretical research, and student education. Attached to the clinic is a school of nursing.

Großhadern (in the town district Hadern) is a district in the south-west of the Bavarian state capital Munich. Großhadern is primarily a bourgeois residential area. Exceptions are the so-called "village core" with numerous small shops as well as the university district around the Klinikum Großhadern. This includes several student halls and three football fields. The number of restaurants and beer gardens is also remarkably high. In the south-west of Großhadern, between the subway station "Klinikum Großhadern" and the adjacent forest, a new settlement is being built on a former field with owned and rented apartments as well as some shops. Many of the houses are already finished and lived in. The old church of St. Peter (built in 1315, renovated in the 17th century) is located in the village center, not far from it, the parish church of St. Canisius, built in 1925, with the Stations of the Cross by Kaspar Schleibner. The Protestant church has its home in the Reformation Memorial Church. A large part of the Großhadern area is in the south-west of the Waldfriedhof.

The Großhadern Town Hall in Munich is the former town hall of the municipality of Großhadern, which was incorporated into Munich in 1938. The building is listed as a protected monument in the Bavarian protected monuments list.

St. Canisius is a former Roman Catholic church in the Hadern district of Munich, Germany. Designed by the Munich architect Franz Rank, the foundation stone was laid in 1925, and the church was consecrated on 29 August 1926 by Cardinal Faulhaber.
