Bewholme Vicarage

Bewholme is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north-west of the town of Hornsea. The civil parish is formed by the villages of Bewholme and Dunnington and the hamlet of Nunkeeling. According to the 2011 UK census, Bewholme parish had a population of 232, a slight increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 230. The name Bewholme possibly derives from the plural of the Old Norse bjúgr meaning 'river bend' or the Old English bēag meaning 'circle'. The village has a church, St John Baptist, built in 1900 by S. Walker of Bridlington, and football field. The former vicarage was designed by William Burges, who also drew up an unexecuted design for the church.

Seaton is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) west of Hornsea on the A1035 road (formerly B1244). The civil parish consists of the village of Seaton and the hamlets of Catfoss and Wassand. According to the 2011 UK census, Seaton parish had a population of 433, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 409.

Nunkeeling is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of the town of Hornsea and 3 miles (5 km) south of Beeford. Nunkeeling forms part of the civil parish of Bewholme. St Mary Magdalene and St Helena Church was built c. 12th century. In 1810 it was rebuilt and is now in ruins. In 1972 Pevsner noted that the church was "full of trees". Effigies from the church were removed to Hornsea. In November 1985 the remains were designated as Grade II and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.

Wassand is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Hornsea and to the south of the A1035 road (formerly B1244). It forms part of the civil parish of Seaton. Wassand Hall is a large Regency house overlooking Hornsea Mere. The hall was designated a Grade II* listed building in March 1952 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.Wassand was served from 1865 to 1953 by Wassand railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.

Nunkeeling Priory was a priory of Benedictine nuns in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England founded by Agnes de Arches or de Catfoss in 1152 . It was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene and to St. Helen. The priory became well known and nearby Keeling was renamed Nunkeeling. The priory suffered from great poverty towards the end of the 13th century. In the early 14th century several cases of disobedience among the nuns became known, leading to disciplinary measures ordered by the archbishop of York (possibly William Melton). Nunkeeling priory was not immediately dissolved in 1536, even being refounded in 1537. However, its remaining assets were finally surrendered in 1540. Once the land was confiscated and became crown property under Henry VIII, it was eventually sold as a manor. The last prioress was Christine Burgh, who moved to Catterick where she died in 1566. The church of the priory was rebuilt in 1810 using materials of the original structure, but has fallen into ruins since.

Wassand Hall is a large Regency house situated to the west of Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, overlooking Hornsea Mere, which is part of its estate. The hall was designated a Grade II* listed building in March 1952 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. The Hall contains a collection of 18th and 19th Century paintings, English and Continental Silver, furniture, and a collection of porcelain.The estate has been in the possession of the Constable family since about 1520. It was rebuilt in 1815 during the Regency period, the original house having been demolished because it had fallen into disrepair. Ownership passed to a widow, Lady Ernestine Strickland-Constable in 1975. Upon her death in 1995, the estate became held by her great-nephew, Rupert Russell, who resides at Wassand Hall with his wife Catherine.During World War II, the house was requisitioned by the army and was used by the Free French.

Sigglesthorne is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Hornsea on the A1035 road (formerly B1244) where it meets the B1243 road. According to the 2011 UK census, Sigglesthorne parish had a population of 404, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 282. The village has around 175 houses. There is also an ancient church dedicated to St. Lawrence that was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. There is also a Church of England school. It is rumoured throughout the village that the settlement was given its name as a result of a Viking who lived there. This Viking leader was supposedly called Siggle/Siggul, and since hawthorne is the predominant type of hedge around the village, it was given the name "Siggul's thorne" → Sigglesthorne. Hornsea Road in Sigglesthorne is now the home to a large garden centre named Hornsea Garden Centre.

Catfoss is a hamlet in the civil parish of Seaton, in Holderness, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 5 miles (8 km) west of the town of Hornsea. The hamlet is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having ten villagers, six ploughlands, and meadows covering 24 acres (9.7 ha). the name derives from two elements; the first is a personal name (Catta) and the second is a common word for a stream or watercourse in Northern England (Foss).> Catfoss Lane, between Catfoss and Brandesburton, is the location of the former RAF Catfoss, an airfield which is now home to a variety of businesses.

Hornsea Mere is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire, England, and lies to the west of Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The mere was used as a base for the Royal Naval Air Service and then latterly, the Royal Air Force during the First World War.

Royal Air Force Catfoss, or more simply RAF Catfoss, is a former Royal Air Force station during the Second World War. It was located 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England and 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Leconfield, East Riding of Yorkshire, with the nearest village being Brandesburton. The airfield was opened in 1932 for an Armament Training Camp. A small number of fighters were posted there, at the start of the Second World War, before the airfield was rebuilt as a bomber station. It initially closed in November 1945, but re-opened in 1959 as a site for the PGM-17 Thor ballistic missile. It closed again in 1963.

Goxhill is a small hamlet in the civil parish of Hatfield, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south-west of Hornsea town centre. In 1931 the parish had a population of 70.On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Great Hatfield and Little Hatfield to form Hatfield.The parish church of St Giles is a Grade II listed building.In 1823, Goxhill parish was in the Wapentake and Liberty of Holderness. At the time, the parish church was undergoing repairs, begun in 1818. The population was 70, which included five farmers. In 1840 the population was 65, again with five farmers, the parish land of 880 acres (3.6 km2) the property of Rev Charles Constable, who had been patron of the St Giles Church incumbent since 1823.Goxhill was served from 1865 to 1953 by Wassand railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.

RNAS Hornsea Mere, (also known as RAF Hornsea Mere), was a Royal Naval Air Service seaplane base located on Hornsea Mere, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The mere was used for seaplanes because it was close to the sea and because its still water made it easier to launch the planes. Initially used as a relief site, the base became a full station in 1918, and was vacated in 1919. Many of the original buildings and earthworks survive.
