Hornsea Mere

RNAS Hornsea Mere, (also known as RAF Hornsea Mere), was a Royal Naval Air Service seaplane base located on Hornsea Mere, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The mere was used for seaplanes because it was close to the sea and because its still water made it easier to launch the planes. Initially used as a relief site, the base became a full station in 1918, and was vacated in 1919. Many of the original buildings and earthworks survive.

Hornsea School and Language College is situated in the small seaside town of Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is a secondary comprehensive and takes pupils from Hornsea and the surrounding area. The school was built in 1958 on the site of Hornsea House, with 500 pupils. This included an institute of further education. By 1971 the school population had grown to over 1,000 and became a Comprehensive School. It has a student support centre to help students with bullying and social issues. The sixth form college was built on a part of the school playing fields as a self-sufficient building comprising a common room, a library and computer room, a conference room and several teaching rooms. Hornsea School & Language College achieved specialist Language College status in 2004, and holds the Healthy Schools Award Alumni Hornsea School and & Language College has dedicated part of a school corridor to illustrating successful former students.

Hornsea Bridge railway station was a railway station which served the town of Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was on the Hull and Hornsea Railway and the other station serving the town (the other being Hornsea Town). It opened on 28 March 1864 and closed, as recommended by the Beeching Report, on 19 October 1964. This station was originally to have been the terminus of the Hull and Hornsea railway and was the goods station for Hornsea throughout its existence. The passenger platforms were on an embankment with the goods yard to the north at ground level. After the station was demolished, the site is occupied by a new road layout with the large goods yard, which is now the site of an industrial estate. The embankment can be traced at the western end of the station site, the section at the eastern side of the road continues to Hornsea Town as a footpath. That is the only major break in the railway formation on the line.

Bettison's Folly is a tower in Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Also referred to as Bettisons Tower and the Forgotten Folly, it was built some time between 1829 and 1853 by William Bettison. At the time, Bettison was a Hull-based brewer who built the folly in what was then his garden. In those days communication was by sight, so his manservant would ascend the tower at the usual time his master returned from work, see him descending Southorpe hill and run down the tower to ensure "dinner was served" as the master walked into the house. It incorporates a cranked up flagpole, initially installed to convey private messages. During the Second World War the tower was an air raid look-out point and siren (Hull was the most heavily bombed UK city after London). The siren was still in use in the late 1950s when a new siren was erected on the new fire station on Southgate. The Folly is decorated with locally made "treacle" bricks, highly fired for durability and subject to misshaping. Nowadays, Bettison's Folly is a Grade II listed building and stands in the middle of a new housing estate off Newbegin, the main street. It is rarely open to the public.In 2011, Huffington Post included the folly in their unordered list of the "Top 10 Pieces of Folly Architecture".

Hornsea is a seaside town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The settlement dates to at least the early medieval period. The town was expanded in the Victorian era with the coming of the Hull and Hornsea Railway in 1864. In the First World War the Mere was briefly the site of RNAS Hornsea Mere, a seaplane base. During the Second World War the town and beach was heavily fortified against invasion. The civil parish encompasses Hornsea town; the natural lake, Hornsea Mere; as well as the lost or deserted villages of Hornsea Beck, Northorpe and Southorpe. Structures of note in the parish include the medieval parish church of St Nicholas, Bettison's Folly, Hornsea Mere and the sea front promenade. The economy includes a mix of tourism and small manufacturing. Most notably, Hornsea Pottery was established in Hornsea in 1949 and closed in 2000. Modern Hornsea still functions as a coastal resort, and has large caravan sites to the north and south. The soft soil and low-lying geography result in consistent coastal erosion that threatens some of the infrastructure of the community. This is expected to get worse as climate change causes sea level rise. In some areas, residents have already been forced to take a managed retreat.

Hornsea Town railway station was a railway station which served the town of Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was the terminus of the Hull and Hornsea Railway. It opened with the rest of the line on 28 March 1864, it was originally named just "Hornsea".The station originally had one platform adjacent to the station building with a canopy over the platform. There was a turntable, a signal box and two goods sidings. By 1910 there was an additional double sided platform and long sidings.The station was renamed – with the "Town" suffix – on 25 September 1950, and closed on 19 October 1964.Two camping coaches were positioned here by the North Eastern Region from 1959 to 1964.Hornsea Town railway station is now a Grade II listed building.

Goxhill is a small hamlet in the civil parish of Hatfield, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south-west of Hornsea town centre. In 1931 the parish had a population of 70.On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Great Hatfield and Little Hatfield to form Hatfield.The parish church of St Giles is a Grade II listed building.In 1823, Goxhill parish was in the Wapentake and Liberty of Holderness. At the time, the parish church was undergoing repairs, begun in 1818. The population was 70, which included five farmers. In 1840 the population was 65, again with five farmers, the parish land of 880 acres (3.6 km2) the property of Rev Charles Constable, who had been patron of the St Giles Church incumbent since 1823.Goxhill was served from 1865 to 1953 by Wassand railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.

Wassand railway station was a railway station that served the villages of Wassand and Goxhill in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was on the Hull and Hornsea Railway. It opened in 1865, and was originally named "Goxhill". It was renamed "Wassand" (to avoid confusion with Goxhill in Lincolnshire) on 1 October 1904, and closed on 21 September 1953.

Wassand is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Hornsea and to the south of the A1035 road (formerly B1244). It forms part of the civil parish of Seaton. Wassand Hall is a large Regency house overlooking Hornsea Mere. The hall was designated a Grade II* listed building in March 1952 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.Wassand was served from 1865 to 1953 by Wassand railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.
