Gressenhall

Mitford and Launditch Rural District was a rural district in Norfolk, England from 1894 to 1974.It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Mitford and Launditch rural sanitary district, taking its name from the two ancient hundreds of Mitford and Launditch. It completely encircled East Dereham Urban District. The district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 and became part of the Breckland district. Its boundaries never changed during its 80 year existence.

Dillington Carr is a 55-hectare (140-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Dereham in Norfolk.This valley in a tributary of the River Wensum has extensive irrigation reservoirs and areas of carr woodland. An outstanding variety of birds breed on the site, including gadwalls, great crested grebe and tufted ducks on the reservoirs and barn owls, lesser spotted woodpeckers and willow tit in the woodland.The site is private land with no public access.

Dereham Rush Meadow is a 22.2-hectare (55-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Dereham in Norfolk.This is an area of grassland and alder carr in the valley of a tributary of the River Wensum. The site has diverse habitats and it is traditionally maintained by grazing by horses. It is subject to flooding in winter.The site is private land with no public access.

Beetley is a village and civil parish in the Breckland district of Norfolk, England. According to the 2011 census the parish had a population of 1,396. The village is situated four miles (6 km) north of East Dereham.

Scarning railway station was located on the line between Wendling and Dereham. It served the parish of Scarning, and closed in 1850.

Longham is a village situated in the Breckland District of Norfolk and covers an area of 540 hectares (2.1 square miles) with a population of 219 in 100 households at the 2001 census, increasing to a population of 224 in 99 households at the 2011 Census. Longham lies 5 miles (8.0 km) north-west of Dereham and 11 miles (18 km) south of Fakenham. The villages name means 'homestead/village of Lawa's people'. Longham is served by the mediaeval church of St. Andrew & St. Peter in the Benefice of Gressenhall. It is a grade II* listed building.

Hoe Rough is a 12-hectare (30-acre) nature reserve north of Dereham in Norfolk. It is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and is part of the Beetley and Hoe Meadows Site of Special Scientific Interest.This is mixture of grassland and wet fen. Around 200 species of invertebrates have been recorded, including the rare great crested newt. Notable plants include green-winged and early marsh orchids.There is public access to the site.

Scarning is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It covers an area of 14.13 km2 (5.46 sq mi) and had a population of 2,932 in 1,092 households at the 2001 census, which eased at the 2011 Census to 2,906 in the same number of households. For local government, it falls within the district of Breckland. It lies two miles (3.2 km) west of Dereham and 17 miles (27 km) west of Norwich, on the old turnpike road between Dereham and Swaffham.

Beetley and Hoe Meadows is an 11.4-hectare (28-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Dereham in Norfolk, United Kingdom. The site is in two nearby areas, and Hoe Meadow is part of Hoe Rough nature reserve, which is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife TrustThis site is described by Natural England as "one of the finest remaining areas of wet unimproved grassland in Norfolk". It is traditionally managed by summer grazing, with plants such as glaucous Sedge and bog pimpernel in marshy parts and blunt-flowered rush and carnation sedge in permanently wet areas.Hoe Rough is open to the public.

Bittering is a hamlet in the county of Norfolk, England, now in the civil parish of Beeston with Bittering. It lies west of East Dereham and south of Fakenham. The area was formerly Little Bittering parish, which was annexed to the neighbouring Beeston. The mediaeval church of St Peter is a Grade II* listed building.

Scarning Fen is a 4-hectare (9.9-acre) nature reserve west in Dereham in Norfolk. It is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and is part of Potter and Scarning Fens Site of Special Scientific Interest and Norfolk Valley Fens Special Area of Conservation.This small reserve has chalky valley mire, carr and grassland. Twenty-nine nationally scarce invertebrates have been recorded, and it is the only site in the county for the small red damselfly. There are a number of rare plants, including liverworts and mosses.

Potter and Scarning Fens, East Dereham is a 6.2-hectare (15-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Dereham in Norfolk. It is part of the Norfolk Valley Fens Special Area of Conservation. Scarning Fen is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and it is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.These are valleys with calcareous fens on peat with an exceptionally diverse flora, including uncommon mosses and liverworts. Insects include the nationally rare small red damselfly.The fens are open to the public.
