Carlton-on-Trent is a small village and civil parish in England, located between the River Trent and the A1 road near Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. The population of the civil parish was 228 at the 2001 census increasing marginally only to 229 at the 2011 census. The village forms part of the Newark and Sherwood district, it is also served by a Parish Council. The village has several entries in the Domesday Book, mainly for the year 1086 relating to the Records of the Exchequer, and its related bodies, with those of the Office of First Fruits and Tenths, and the Court of Augmentations. Associated names for these entries include The Earl Tosti and the Man of Rodger De Bully. Carlton Mill was a six-storey brick tower windmill built before 1821. The tower is still standing, as a shell without floors, to a height of 60 feet.

Sutton-on-Trent is a large village and parish in Nottinghamshire, situated on the Great North Road, and on the west bank of the River Trent. The village contains 2,450 acres of land and according to the 2001 census it had a population of 1,327, increasing marginally to 1,331 at the 2011 census.It is located 8 miles north of Newark-on-Trent, which takes approximately 20 minutes to reach by car, and 10 miles south of Retford, which takes approximately 22 minutes to reach by car. Sutton Mill was a stone-built tower windmill, built in 1825. It was owned by the Bingham family of Grassthorpe from the 1860s until 1984. The four-storey tower has been converted to a house.Sir Godfrey Hounsfield was born in Sutton-on-Trent on 28 August 1919, he went on to share the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Allan MacLeod Cormack for his part in developing the diagnostic technique of X-ray computed tomography (CT). The doctors Surgery on Hounsfield Way is named for him. He is buried in the cemetery on Ingram lane.

Cromwell is a village in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located 5 miles (8 km) north of Newark. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 188, increasing to 232 at the 2011 Census.St. Giles' Church, Cromwell is 13th century, with a tower built c. 1427. The Old Rectory was built c. 1680 as a dower house for the Earl of Clare, and in use as a rectory before 1714. Between the village and the River Trent lie an extensive area of Roman fields with associated villa. Parts of a timber and stone bridge have also been recorded close by.Cromwell is one of the four Thankful Villages in Nottinghamshire – those rare places that suffered no fatalities during the Great War of 1914 to 1918. Just to the east of the village is Cromwell Lock the point where the non-tidal River Trent ends and the so-called Tideway starts. From Cromwell lock commercial traffic and pleasure craft may navigate north towards Torksey Gainsborough and ultimately the Trent Falls where the River Trent meets the Yorkshire Ouse and becomes the Humber. Navigators on the Trent must wait till the tide is ebbing or flooding in their favour to ensure a safe and efficient passage.

Grassthorpe is a small village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. Population details are included in the civil parish of Weston. A former chapel of St James was in the village. It was converted into a cottage and barn during the reign of Elizabeth I. There is also a disused watermill.In the 1660s Gresthorpe Hall (i.e. Grassthorpe) was rented to Robert Shawe who supported the Quaker William Smith of Besthorpe (d. 1672) in speaking to 150 people of the ‘lowest and meanest’ sort there. Smith was allowed to attend by his Nottingham gaoler Robert White causing a sharp complaint in August 1669 from Rev John Hewes, the vicar of Normanton. There are three windmills recorded at Grassthorpe. A post mill was moved to Tuxford in 1814. A composite post mill was moved in 1870, again to Tuxford. A tower windmill in an orchard belonged to the Seels family. The miller in 1844 was Thomas Seels; the mill passed to Samuel Seels, who was 82 in 1935. The windmill was 3 storeys high, 14-foot (4.3 m) wide at the base, having 2 pairs of stones and dressing machinery. The top of the mill was pulled down by engine in 1934. At some time previously the sails had been blown down, supposedly being "too heavy".There are four Grade II Listed buildings in the village: The Pinfold, Copper Hill The Pigeoncote at The Manor House The Manor House and Boundary Wall Snowdrop Cottage, Town Street

Cromwell Lock is a large navigation lock on the River Trent in Nottinghamshire, England. The first lock to be built on the site was constructed by the Trent Navigation Company, having been authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1906. Construction began in late 1908, as soon as the Company had raised sufficient capital. The lock was extended in 1935, when an extra pair of gates were added downstream of the main lock, effectively forming a second lock. The lock was further improved in 1960, when the two locks were made into one, capable of holding eight standard Trent barges.Cromwell Weir by the side of the lock is one of the largest weirs on the Trent and marks the tidal limit of the river. On 28 September 1975, during an eighty-mile, night navigation exercise in extreme weather conditions, ten members of the 131 Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers were killed after a power failure caused the navigation lights on the weir to go out and their boat went over the crest. A memorial garden with a block of Scottish granite bearing the names of the men who died, lies next to the lock.The site is defined by the Ordnance Survey as the nearest tidal location to Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire, which is the furthest point from the sea in Great Britain, 72 kilometres (45 mi) away.

At the south-east end of the village are three 16th century tenements built with cruck trusses.In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Weston like this: "WESTON, a parish, with a village, in Southwell district, Notts; on the Great Northern railway, 3 miles NNW of Carlton-on-Trent. Post town, Newark. Acres, 1,690. Real property, £2,745. Pop., 380. Houses, 85. The manor belongs to Earl Manvers. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln. Value, £500. Patron, Earl Manvers. The church was recently repaired, and has a tower and spire. There are a Wesleyan chapel and an endowed school."

Meering is a geographically small civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. With a population of zero (2001 census), it is grouped with Girton to form a parish meeting. The parish was originally an extra-parochial area, and was once populated, although not in more than single figures since census records began.The parish is bound by the Carlton Rack river to the west (which forms the border with Sutton on Trent) and to the east a lagoon and a brook separates it from Girton civil parish.
