Cromwell Lock is a large navigation lock on the River Trent in Nottinghamshire, England. The first lock to be built on the site was constructed by the Trent Navigation Company, having been authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1906. Construction began in late 1908, as soon as the Company had raised sufficient capital. The lock was extended in 1935, when an extra pair of gates were added downstream of the main lock, effectively forming a second lock. The lock was further improved in 1960, when the two locks were made into one, capable of holding eight standard Trent barges.Cromwell Weir by the side of the lock is one of the largest weirs on the Trent and marks the tidal limit of the river. On 28 September 1975, during an eighty-mile, night navigation exercise in extreme weather conditions, ten members of the 131 Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers were killed after a power failure caused the navigation lights on the weir to go out and their boat went over the crest. A memorial garden with a block of Scottish granite bearing the names of the men who died, lies next to the lock.The site is defined by the Ordnance Survey as the nearest tidal location to Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire, which is the furthest point from the sea in Great Britain, 72 kilometres (45 mi) away.

Holme is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England. The population of the civil parish (including Langford) at the 2011 Census was 165. It is located on the east of the River Trent, less than half a mile from the riverside and 4 miles north of Newark-on-Trent. The parish church of St Giles is an Early Tudor rebuild of a 13th-century church. The Lancashire wool merchant John Barton was responsible for the rebuilding. He died in 1491, and is buried in the chancel with his wife. In a window of his house at Holme is inscribed the verse: I thanke God, and ever shall, It is the sheep have paid for all.Holme was historically a chapelry in the ancient parish of North Muskham. Until about 1575 it lay on the west side of the River Trent, but there was then a cataclysmic flood which changed the course of the river. Holme was therefore separated by the river from the rest of the parish. In 1866 Holme became a separate civil parish.The last known catch of a sturgeon on the Trent occurred in 1902 near the village, the fish was eight and a half feet long and weighed 250 pounds.

The parish has a population of 943 (2001 census) with around 360 properties, increasing to 985 at the 2011 census.St Wilfrid's Church is the parish church, a medieval building which is Grade I listed. It was restored during 1906 and 1907.There is currently one public house: 'The Muskham Ferry'.

Carlton-on-Trent is a small village and civil parish in England, located between the River Trent and the A1 road near Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. The population of the civil parish was 228 at the 2001 census increasing marginally only to 229 at the 2011 census. The village forms part of the Newark and Sherwood district, it is also served by a Parish Council. The village has several entries in the Domesday Book, mainly for the year 1086 relating to the Records of the Exchequer, and its related bodies, with those of the Office of First Fruits and Tenths, and the Court of Augmentations. Associated names for these entries include The Earl Tosti and the Man of Rodger De Bully. Carlton Mill was a six-storey brick tower windmill built before 1821. The tower is still standing, as a shell without floors, to a height of 60 feet.

South Muskham is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England, close to the border with Lincolnshire. It is located west of the River Trent and the A1 road, 2 miles (3 km) north of Newark-upon-Trent. The parish includes the hamlet of Little Carlton. The population of the parish was 494 in the 2011 census.The village lies on the historic route of the A1 Great North Road. When the Newark Bypass was built in 1964, the old Great North Road through the village became the A6065. In 1989 the road south of the village became part of the A616, and the road through the village became the B6325. South of the village the old Great North Road passes over a causeway built in 1770 by John Smeaton, and then crosses the River Trent at Muskham Bridge. St Wilfrid's Church is a Grade I listed building. Parts of the church date back to the 13th century.
