Leicester station was opened in 1840 by the Midland Counties Railway, and rebuilt in 1894 and 1978. It is on the Midland Main Line, which runs from London St Pancras to Sheffield and Nottingham. It is 99 miles 7 chains (159.5 km) north of London St Pancras.

Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre is a cinema, art gallery and café bar in the city centre of Leicester, England. The two modern cinema screens show everything from micro-budget independent films to the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and there are often festivals and events. The regularly changing art programme presents work by local and international artists, and the education programme provides courses for people of all ages to learn about, and create their own, film and art. During 2014-2015 the venue hosted over 200,000 visitors.Phoenix is a charity with an overarching aim to 'bring inspiring film and art to all' and was established in 1989. This mission is enacted through its education programme, grants and events to develop upcoming artistic talent and efforts to widen access to cinema, especially through its travelling community cinema. Much of this work is financed through its mainstream cinema ticket sales and its cafe-bar, with sales in these areas increasing by around 10% during 2014-2015.The venue is currently situated in the Phoenix Square building. Work began on constructing the £21.5 million scheme in November 2007 and was completed in Autumn 2009: Phoenix Square officially opened on 19 November 2009. The cinema replaces the Phoenix Arts Centre, and maintains strong links with De Montfort University. The building houses a digital exhibition space and digital production facilities, two cinema screens, a screen room and screen lounge. Space is provided for 37 new creative businesses, as well as a cafe/bar open to the public. The venue was formerly known as Phoenix Square, and has been previously referred to as Leicester Digital Media Centre.

Highfields is an inner city area of Leicester, England. It is one of the highest areas in the city, on high ground southeast of the city centre. To the west the area is bounded by the Midland Main Line, to the south by London Road (A6), and to the east by East Park Road. To the north is Spinney Hills, though there is no clear boundary between the two areas, and Spinney Hills (which extends northwards to Humberstone Road) is often considered to be part of Highfields. The neighbourhood is within walking distance of the city centre of Leicester and offers many amenities for religious, social, cultural and commercial activities. The population is split between the Spinney Hills, Wycliffe and Stoneygate wards of the Leicester City Council. A section of the area running between London Road, Evington Road and St Peter's Road was designated as the South Highfields Conservation Area in April 1981. This conservation area originally had an area of approximately 22.20 hectares. The boundaries of the conservation area were reassessed in 2003, and it was reduced to approximately 20.55 hectares.Highfields is bounded by London Road and Evington Road meaning that it has a large amount of amenities on its doorstep. Notably this includes the railway station, many Mosques (the biggest includes a leisure centre within its grounds), Churches, Temples, a modern health centre, nurseries, schools, local shops, restaurants, community centres and banks. The area also has a public library which is located on Melbourne Road.

Athena is a Grade II-listed events venue in the cultural quarter of Leicester City Centre, England. Built originally as an Odeon Cinema in 1936, it closed for most of the 1990s and remained vacant up until 2005, where the building was restored as a multi-discipline events venue.

The St Matthew's estate is an area of inner city Leicester. It is statistically the most deprived neighbourhood in Leicester today and the most income deprived neighbourhood in England (Indices of deprivation 2007).It lies immediately to the northeast of the city centre and is defined by the A594 ring road to the southwest at the city centre, Belgrave Gate to the west between the city centre and the area of Belgrave and then Belgrave to the north at Dysart Way and Humberstone Road (A47) to the east at Highfields. The area previously consisted of small factories and slum housing - much of it back-to-back houses - and was redeveloped in the 1950s as council housing. The majority of the housing stock is local authority-owned. The area is isolated, with no adjacent residential areas and is cut off from the city centre by the dual-carriageway ring road.

The Curve Theatre is a theatre in Leicester, England, based in the cultural quarter in Leicester City Centre. Before being named Curve, it was referred to as Leicester Performing Arts Centre. It is adjacent to the Leicester Athena conference and banqueting centre.

Barker's Ground was a cricket ground in Leicester, Leicestershire. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1825, when Leicester played Sheffield. The first first-class match came in 1836, when the North played the South; the South won by 218 runs, largely due to Alfred Mynn's two not out innings. The North used the ground for 4 further first-class matches up to 1846, including the ground's final first-class match between the North and the Marylebone Cricket Club. Midland Counties played a single first-class match at Barker's Ground against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1843. The final recorded match on the ground saw Leicestershire play an All-England Eleven in 1860.The owner of the ground was "Old Barker", the landlord of the Anchor Inn, Halford Street, who did very well from the gate money. The ground was sited on the east side of Wharf Street, near the Humberstone Road.Following the final recorded match held at Barker's Ground, it was sold for building. Today, the ground would be located along Wharf Street, which is in the centre of Leicester.

The Central Baptist Church, also known as the Charles Street Baptist Chapel, is a Baptist church on Charles Street in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, UK. It is affiliated with the Baptist Union of Great Britain. Leicester in the 19th century was known as the ‘Metropolis of Dissent’ with a large number of non-conformist chapels and churches. There have been numerous places of worship of various denominations, including the Baptists. Numerous chapels were built since the 17th century, many in the 19th century.The Charles Street Baptist Chapel was designed by William Flynt, a leading local architect, and constructed in 1830. The congregation of the Belvoir Street Chapel united with that of Charles Street in the 1940s and became known as the United Baptist Church. It was designated a Grade II listed building (1074071) in 1973. It was named the Central Baptist Church in 1983 and is the last surviving of several Baptist churches in Leicester City Centre.The building also houses the William Carey Museum, dedicated to William Carey, who was instrumental in the formation of the Baptist Missionary Society.
