McMahon House (Dubuque, Iowa)

The Johann Christian Frederick Rath House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Rath settled in the Dubuque are from his native Hanover in 1851. He was a wood worker, farmer and lead miner. He acquired property along what is now Mt. Loretta Avenue and gave parcels to his children as they came of age. Rath completed this house in 1853. He died in 1881 and the house remained in the family until 1937. The house is a 1½-story brick structure with a walk-out basement. The side-gable roof has a large dormer on the back that was created from two smaller dormers in 1940. Also on the rear of the house is a full-length, two-story porch. The house's general form, window shapes, chimney placement and its five-bay, symmetrical plan suggests the Georgian Revival style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The Metropolitan Archdiocese of Dubuque (Latin: Archidiœcesis Metropolitae Dubuquensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church in the northeastern quarter of the state of Iowa in the United States. It includes all the Iowa counties north of Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek, Iowa, Johnson, Cedar, and Clinton counties, and east of Kossuth, Humboldt, Webster and Boone counties. The archdiocese has an area of about 17,400 square miles (45,000 km2). The Archdiocese of Dubuque is a metropolitan archdiocese. There are three suffragan dioceses in the ecclesiastical province under Dubuque's metropolitan archbishop: the Dioceses of Davenport, Des Moines, and Sioux City.

The Kelley House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. John and Mary Kelley bought this property from James Fanning in 1855. Kelley built this two-story structure, which is a rare example of Mississippi Valley French Colonial architecture in Iowa. While Kelley was not of French ancestry, the Dubuque area was initially settled by French Canadians. However, this house, completed by 1858, was completed well after the French influence in the area. It is also an example of the French style from the Southern United States and the Caribbean. Typical of this style is the full-length galerie, or porch, with an exterior staircase, and the main living quarters located above a full-height ground floor level. Both of these elements are found in the Kelley house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

St. Pius X Seminary is associated with Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and run under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The seminary prepares Minor (College) Seminarians for the priesthood, specifically preparing candidates for entrance into Major Seminary & Theological studies. Through Loras, the seminary provides full training in Philosophical studies, while giving students the necessary religious studies courses required for entrance into Major Seminary. Founded in 1839 by Bishop Mathias Loras as St. Raphael Seminary, the seminary has operated under various names and conditions at Loras College until adopting its present name in 1954. St. Pius X has prepared countless Seminarians across Iowa & surrounding states for the priesthood, counting over 30 Bishops as alumni. Currently, the seminary is housed at the Vianney House and serves Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Dubuque and the Diocese of Des Moines. The current rector of St. Pius X Seminary is Fr. David Schatz and the spiritual director is Fr. Tom McDermott.

It is one of two hospitals located in the city – the other being Finley Hospital. The hospital is based primarily in Dubuque, with a critical access hospital in Dyersville, Iowa. Mercy is located just to the north of U.S. Highway 20 on Mercy Drive. The hospital is a member of MercyOne. Mercy has 263 beds in the Dubuque location, along with another 25 acute beds and a nursing home at the Dyersville location. In 2005 a cardiology center was opened at the hospital. This new heart unit is used for both inpatient and outpatient procedures. Mercy moved its Psychiatric Services into a totally renovated area in 2009 and opened the region's only Autism Center in July, 2010.

The Garland House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Joseph C. Garland settled in Dubuque in 1889 and built a general insurance agency that grew to cover 25 counties in Iowa representing the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was also a community booster and philanthropist. The exterior of his large Georgian Revival home is covered with concrete block veneer, which is an unusual combination. The main facade is dominated by a two-story pedimented portico, the east elevation by a centered semicircular vault dormer, and the rear elevation by a two-story veranda. The house is capped with a hip roof with dormers. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and it was included as a contributing property in the Langworthy Historic District in 2004.

St. Raphael's Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral and a parish church in the Archdiocese of Dubuque located in Dubuque, Iowa. The parish is the oldest congregation of any Christian denomination in the state of Iowa. The cathedral church, rectory, former convent, and former parochial school building are contributing properties in the Cathedral Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

The T. Ben Loetscher House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. T. Ben and Nellie Loetscher had this house built in 1929. It is one of the best examples of early 20th century period revival eclecticism in the city. It was designed by Dubuque architect C.I. Krajewski. The 2½-story brick house features a main entrance with sidelights and other windows that reaches the attic level. It features a blend of wood carvings in foliate and rope designs, and Bedford stone lintels and blocks that are carved with reliefs that reflect an Italian Renaissance influence. The brick color, chimneys and roof style reflect the Tudor Revival style. The house also has large windows with transom and casements that reflect the Colonial Revival style. A single-story brick addition is located on its southeast side blends into the rest of the house. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Langworthy Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 110 resources, which included 94 contributing buildings, five contributing structures, nine non-contributing buildings, and two non-contributing structures. This residential area was developed from the end of the American Civil War to the beginning of World War I. Most of the houses were built between 1890 and 1910, with four large houses pre-dating the Civil War. For the most part, the houses here are larger in scale and include examples of Victorian and the various revival and American Movement styles from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The district is completely residential with no commercial or institutional buildings, and with only one multi-family house, a duplex. Two houses were individually listed on the National Register: Langworthy House, an Octagon house from 1855, and the Garland House (1907). The district derives its name from the Langworthy family who were early settlers in Dubuque and played a prominent role in the development of the local lead mining industry and the city itself. The Fenelon Place Residential Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 218 resources, which included 171 contributing buildings, two contributing structures, one contributing site, 43 non-contributing buildings, and one non-contributing structure. The residential area that makes up the district is located on a plateau located directly above the Mississippi River Valley. This was the first bluff-top neighborhood in Dubuque that established elevator service. The first Fenelon Place Elevator, listed on the National Register in 1978, was completed in 1894. Early houses on the plateau were small cottages built by lead miners. They were replaced by large houses that were built in two periods. The first period at the end of the 19th century saw houses built in the Italianate, Gothic Revival, Second Empire, and Queen Anne styles. House in the second period in the beginning of the 20th century were largely built in the Classical Revival and Tudor Revival styles.

Schroeder-Klein Grocery Company Warehouse, also known as the Shields & Bradley Block, is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was built to house the warehouse needs of the Schroeder-Kleine Grocer Company and the M.M. Walker Company, two of the most prominent wholesale food distributors in the upper Midwest at the turn of the 20th century. Local builders Shields & Bradley constructed the three-story warehouse in 1894 so that the two firms could operate independent of each other. When the two firms merged in 1921, the building became fully interconnected. It was used as a food distribution warehouse until 1959. Other commercial ventures that have been housed here have included beer and soda bottling and distribution, chemical production, overhead door sales, hair products retailer, and pet groomer. In addition to its commercial importance, the building is also considered a significant example of a late 19th century Romanesque Revival warehouse. This was one of several large warehouses built in that style during the same time period in the city, and it is one of few that is still extant. Elements typical of the style found in this building include its massive limestone base, limestone string courses, brick corbelling, and round-arch windows. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

The Bishop's Block, also known as the Bishop's Block Apartments, is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It was included as a contributing property in the Old Main Street Historic District in 2015.
