Bevercotes Colliery

Bothamsall is a village and civil parish in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, England. According to the United Kingdom Census 2001 it had a population of 185, increasing (with the inclusion of Bevercotes and Haughton) to 270 at the 2011 Census.

Lound Hall is a country house which sits in between the villages of Bothamsall and Bevercotes, in the county of Nottinghamshire, England. The current house was built in the Georgian style in the 1930s for Sir Harald Peake, a mining company director. There has been a manor house on the site since the 1700s. The hall was used as an orthopaedic hospital during World War II, and later became a training centre for the National Coal Board as well as a mining museum. It has now reverted to private ownership.

The River Maun is a river in Nottinghamshire, England. Its source lies in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, and from there it flows north east through Mansfield (which takes its name from the river), Edwinstowe and Ollerton, these being the heart of the Sherwood Forest area. It becomes known as Whitewater near the village of Walesby and connects to the River Meden temporarily where the Robin Hood Way crosses them. They diverge, and near Markham Moor it merges again with the River Meden this time becoming the River Idle. Its main tributaries are Rainworth Water, Vicar Water and Cauldwell Water. The river has been an important source of power, from at least 1086, when there was a watermill in Mansfield. A big increase in the number of mills began in the 1780s, when the frame knitting industry was decimated by the advent of Richard Arkwright's water-powered spinning frame. William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, encouraged the building of textile mills to relieve unemployment and poverty. Most were converted to do "cotton doubling", and several later became hosiery mills. The conversion of watermills which had formerly ground corn to textile mills led to the building of windmills to carry on milling corn. Although water power has largely ceased, there is still an operational water-mill at Ollerton.

Elkesley is a village in Nottinghamshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 805, increasing to 822 at the 2011 Census. It is located 6 miles south of Retford. The parish church of St Giles was built c. 1300 in Decorated style, and was partially reconstructed in 1845. There is also a pub in Elkesley named the Robin Hood and also a small shop and a primary school, which in January 2008, 82 pupils attended.

Bevercotes is a hamlet and civil parish in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, England, about six miles south of East Retford and five miles north-east of Ollerton. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 28. The population remained less than 100 at the 2011 Census and is included in the civil parish of Bothamsall.The former Bevercotes Colliery was one of the first fully automated coal mines in the country.

The River Meden is a river in Nottinghamshire, England. Its source lies just north of Huthwaite, near the Derbyshire border, and from there it flows north east through Pleasley and Warsop before merging temporarily with the River Maun near Bothamsall. The rivers divide after a short distance and go on separately to a point near Markham Moor where they once more combine to form the River Idle. The river was a source of water power for mills in Pleasley Vale from the 1760s until the 1980s. Three huge cotton mills and their associated mill ponds still dominate the Vale. The buildings were bought by Bolsover District Council in 1992, and have become a centre for light industry. On a much smaller scale was the water mill at Warsop, which still retains much of its internal machinery.

St Giles' Church is a Grade I listed parish church in the Church of England.A church in Elkesleigh or Elchersleigh is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It was dedicated to All Saints or All Hallows, as confirmed in wills of parishioners from the 15th and 16th centuries. The shift to a dedication to St Giles was probably initiated at some point in the first half of the 19th century: White’s Directory cites the church as St Giles for the first time in 1844, though there are still later references to All Hallows.The building is in the decorated gothic style and made from local limestone. The church consists of a nave, north aisle, chancel, and an embattled west tower with pinnacles. West Drayton is a village and civil parish in the Bassetlaw district in the county of Nottinghamshire, England. It lies 24 miles (39 km) north east of Nottingham and 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Retford. In 2011 the parish had a population of 225. The parish includes the villages of Rockley and Markham Moor. West Drayton was originally known simply as Drayton, and was recorded under that name in the Domesday Book of 1086. "West" was added to distinguish the place from the village of East Drayton, 4 miles east. St Paul's Church dates back to the 12th century, but was rebuilt in 1874. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Haughton is a hamlet in the English county of Nottinghamshire. Haughton lies on the south bank of the River Maun about one mile south west from Bothamsall (where the population is included). Administratively it forms part of the Bassetlaw district.

Retford Gamston Airport (ICAO: EGNE) is a small English airport, located 2 NM (3.7 km; 2.3 mi) south of Retford and close to Gamston, Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire. It is used mainly for small private aircraft as well as a base for several private flying schools. Two AOC-holders, IAS Medical and Diamond Executive Aviation, are also based on the airfield. Retford (Gamston) Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P783) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Gamston Aviation Limited).

Milton is a hamlet in Nottinghamshire. It is part of West Markham civil parish, a short distance northwest of West Markham and southwest of Sibthorpe.
