Downing Site

The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, is the geology museum of the University of Cambridge. It is part of the Department of Earth Sciences and is located on the university's Downing Site in Downing Street, central Cambridge, England. The Sedgwick Museum is the oldest of the eight museums which make up the University of Cambridge Museums consortium.

The Godwin Laboratory is a research facility at the University of Cambridge. It was originally set up to investigate radiocarbon dating and its applications, and was one of the first laboratories to determine a radiocarbon calibration curve. The lab is named after the English scientist Harry Godwin.

The Department of Earth Sciences at Cambridge is the University of Cambridge's Earth Sciences department. First formed around 1731, the department incorporates the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences.

Downing Street is a street in central Cambridge, England. It runs between Pembroke Street and Tennis Court Road at the western end and a T-junction with St Andrew's Street at the eastern end. Corn Exchange Street and St Tibbs Row lead off to the north. Downing Place leads off to the south. To the north at the western end is the New Museums Site of the University of Cambridge. To the south is the Downing Site of the University. Many of the University's departments are located here. Downing Place United Reformed Church (St Columba's) is on the corner with Downing Place.

Downing Place United Reformed Church, Cambridge is a church in Cambridge, England, that is part of the United Reformed Church. It was formed in 2018 in a merger between St Columba's Church, Cambridge, and Emmanuel Church, Cambridge. The church occupies the former St Columba's building in Downing Place, which is close to a site occupied by Emmanuel's congregation before 1874. In the recent past prior to the merger of the two congregations, activities have included regular Sunday worship, a programme of music concerts, hosting an NHS group therapy centre and hosting a night-time drop-in centre hosted by Cambridge Street Pastors. The refurbishment has been designed to facilitate similar activities.

The Department of Plant Sciences is a department of the University of Cambridge that conducts research and teaching in plant sciences. It was established in 1904, although the university has had a professor of botany since 1724.

The Department of Geography is one of the constituent departments of the University of Cambridge and is located on the Downing Site. The department has long had an international reputation as a leading centre of research and is consistently ranked as one of the best geography departments in the UK. In 2022 the department was ranked by The Guardian University Rankings as the best geography undergraduate degree in the country.

The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, also known as MAA, at the University of Cambridge houses the university's collections of local antiquities, together with archaeological and ethnographic artefacts from around the world. The museum is located on the university's Downing Site, on the corner of Downing Street and Tennis Court Road. In 2013 it reopened following a major refurbishment of the exhibition galleries, with a new public entrance directly on to Downing Street.The museum is part of the University of Cambridge Museums consortium.

Tennis Court Road is a historic street in central Cambridge, England. It runs parallel with Trumpington Street to the west and Regent Street to the east. At the northern end is a junction with Pembroke Street to the west and Downing Street to the east. To the south as a T-junction with Lensfield Road (the A603). Fitzwilliam Street leads off the road to the west towards the Fitzwilliam Museum. Pembroke College is to the west at the northern end and Downing College is to the east at the southern end of the road. To the east at the northern end is the Downing Site, a major site for departments of the University of Cambridge. On the northeastern end of the road on this site is one of the University museums, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Also on the road are: The Hopkins Building (University of Cambridge Department of Biochemistry, built 1924) The University of Cambridge Department of Pathology (built 1927) The Cambridge Judge Business School (built 1991–95) The Gurdon Institute (built 2004) The Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell ResearchLeading off the road to the east is the cul-de-sac Tennis Court Terrace. Peterhouse owns terraced houses in this street.

The building for the Cambridge Medical School of the University of Cambridge was designed in 1899 by Edward Schroeder Prior. Now the Zoological Laboratory, it is a Grade II listed building.The Medical School building is Prior's largest work. Two of Prior's former clients, Dr Allbutt and the Rev. J. B. Lock, were on the committee that appointed the architect. Prior received an honorarium of only 100 guineas for the plans and elevations. He chose to adopt a classical idiom partly as a result of pressure from the committee. The committee also influenced the design in other ways, such as insisting on a stone façade. In style, the building is based on English Baroque, heavily influenced by recent buildings by architects such as Belcher, Pite and Blomfield. It also reflects the presence of J. J. Stevenson's Chemical Laboratories (1886-8), immediately to the west of the site. The Department of Zoology moved in 1933 into the redeveloped building. The architect was John Murray Easton. The former Humphry Museum was entirely reconstructed within, and today houses the Balfour and Newton Libraries.

St Andrew's Street is a major street in central Cambridge, England. It runs between Sidney Street, at the junction with Hobson Street, to the northwest and Regent Street to the southeast. Downing Street leads off to the west. On the northeastern side of the street are the University of Cambridge colleges Christ's College and Emmanuel College. On the southwestern side are St Andrew the Great church and St Andrew's Street Baptist Church.

The Grand Arcade is a large shopping centre in St Andrew's Street, Cambridge, England. It is anchored by the John Lewis & Partners department store, (formerly Robert Sayle) which is situated to the southeast of the site and which re-opened, following a major rebuild, on 8 November 2007, prior to the rest of the development, which opened on 27 March 2008. It links to the existing Lion Yard shopping centre, the car park of which was demolished and replaced as part of the overall scheme, and renamed on local signage. The city's other major undercover shopping mall, the Grafton, is a ten-minute walk away. The Grand Arcade Cycle Park is the first such dedicated cycle park connected to a shopping centre in the UK. It is set to offer over 500 cycle parking spaces and a cycle shop. Controversially, this was necessary because of the removal of cycle parking on the street in the centre of Cambridge. Besides John Lewis & Partners, there are over 60 other outlets: shops, cafés and restaurants. A full list can be found at the Grand Arcade website.It also houses the new Cambridge Magistrates' Court.
