Victorian Maritime Centre

Westernport Refinery was an oil refinery operated by BP at Crib Point adjacent to Westernport Bay in the Australian state of Victoria. It was constructed from 1963 and started operations in 1966. Its last day of operation was 1 April 1985.Construction of the refinery began in December 1963. It was designed with an initial throughput of 1,500,000 tons of crude oil per annum, and able to be expanded to 2,200,000 tons per annum. It was served by a jetty with two berths for import of crude oil and export of refined products in bulk.

HMAS Otama (SS 62/SSG 62) was an Oberon-class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built in Scotland, the submarine was the last of the class to enter service when commissioned into the RAN in 1978. Otama was a specialist, one of two "Mystery Boats", fitted with additional surveillance and intelligence-gathering equipment. Otama was routinely deployed on classified operations to obtain intelligence on Soviet Pacific Fleet vessels and Chinese Navy vessels, and conducted associated coastal surveillance, throughout Asia. The submarine was part of the RAN's largest flag-showing cruise in the Indian Ocean during 1980. From 1983 to 1985, she underwent an extensive upgrade. In August 1987, two submariners died when Otama submerged while they were still working in the fin. Otama remained in service until late 2000; a delay from her original planned decommissioning date to help attenuate the problems with the replacement Collins-class submarines. Otama was sold to the Western Port Oberon Association in 2001, which planned to preserve her as a museum vessel as part of the proposed Victorian Maritime Centre. Submissions to build the maritime museum at various locations on the Mornington Peninsula were repeatedly rebuffed. In late 2008, the submarine was listed for sale on eBay, but despite several expressions of interest, Otama was not sold. In-principle approval to build the Victorian Maritime Centre on reclaimed land adjacent to the Western Port Marina at Hastings was granted in 2013, but as of 2016, planning permits have not been approved.

Sandstone Island is a small island located approximately one kilometre southeast of the Hastings foreshore in Western Port, Victoria, Australia. Sandstone Island has an area of approximately 19 hectares and is adjacent to Jacks Beach. The island is situated in an area where significant mangrove communities exist. The Island is quite devoid of significant vegetation, however its location in an environmentally significant area in Western Port, places particular emphasis on ensuring appropriate use and development on the Island. The island has been owned by a group of private Sydney buyers since November 2021. Like French Island, Sandstone Island is an unincorporated area under the direct administration of the government of Victoria, and both are subject to the French Island and Sandstone Island Planning Scheme.

Crib Point is a town in Metropolitan Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. It is part of the urban enclave on Western Port comprising Bittern, Crib Point, Hastings, Tyabb, and Somerville. Its local government area is the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. Crib Point is served by three railway stations: Morradoo, Crib Point and Stony Point, the latter of which is the terminus of the greater-metropolitan Stony Point line. Crib Point Post Office opened on 18 July 1890.The town has an Australian Rules football team competing in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. It is situated near the HMAS Cerberus naval base. It is opposite a park that has a long stretch of mangroves. The Victorian Maritime Centre is temporarily located at Crib Point. It has a future permanent site announced at Hastings. The museum houses many artefacts of both the Royal Australian Navy and the Merchant Navy. The Maritime Centre has the HMAS Otama, a former Oberon-class submarine, moored offshore, but it is not in condition suitable for visitor access.

Crib Point railway station is located on the Stony Point line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Crib Point, and it opened on 17 December 1889.A former freight yard was originally located opposite of the station, while a branch line into HMAS Cerberus was located at the Up end of the station, past the level crossing. No. 3 road was removed in 2006, with the last remaining road removed in October 2007. The removal coincided with the removal of a number of semaphore signals at the station as part of a signal upgrade on the Stony Point line.On 22 June 1981, the passenger service between Frankston and Stony Point was withdrawn and replaced with a bus service, with the line between Long Island Junction and Stony Point also closing on the same day. On 16 September 1984, promotional trips for the reopening of the line began, with the passenger service reinstated on 27 September 1984.Flashing lights were provided at the Naval Base Road level crossing, located nearby in the Up direction of the station, in 1974, with boom barriers provided later on in 2011.The former station building, which was of a timber construction, was replaced with the current passenger shelters in February 1986.HMAS Cerberus was also the location for the Mornington Railway Preservation Society, until it relocated to its current site at Moorooduc in 1997.

Morradoo railway station is located on the Stony Point line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Crib Point, and it opened on 7 November 1960 as Rail Motor Stopping Place Number 15. It was renamed Morradoo in 1996.A platform was provided at the stopping place by November 1963. In 1996, the platform was extended to 52 metres in length, and a new shelter was erected. This made the platform the second shortest with a regular service in Victoria (the shortest being at Leawarra, on the same line). The station was renamed as the result of a local competition in 1996, with the winning entry being Morradoo, suggested by Bree Saunders of Crib Point Primary School. Morradoo comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "powder and shot", and was the original name for Crib Point. Stony Point railway station is the terminus of the Stony Point line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Crib Point, and it opened on 17 December 1889.In 1910, a turntable was provided at the station. It was out of use by November 1960, and was removed by March 1963.In 1976, a siding at the Up end of the station was removed. The following year, in 1977, the goods yard was closed.On 22 June 1981, the passenger service between Frankston and Stony Point was withdrawn and replaced with a bus service, with the line between Long Island Junction and Stony Point also closing. On 16 September 1984, promotional trips for the reopening of the line began, with the passenger service reinstated on 27 September 1984.A run-around loop exists to the north and west of the station, but has not been regularly used since locomotive hauled services ceased in April 2008.

HMAS Cerberus is a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base that serves as the primary training establishment for RAN personnel. The base is located adjacent to Crib Point on the Mornington Peninsula, south of the Melbourne City Centre, Victoria, Australia. The base is also an official bounded locality of the Shire of Mornington Peninsula and is the only naval base to have a specific listing in the Australian census. As at the 2016 census, HMAS Cerberus had a population of 1,040.

Bittern railway station is located on the Stony Point line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Bittern, and it opened on 17 December 1889.Between 1921 and 1953, Bittern was the junction station for a branch line to Red Hill.On 22 June 1981, the passenger service between Frankston and Stony Point was withdrawn and replaced with a bus service, with the line between Long Island Junction and Stony Point also closing on the same day. On 16 September 1984, promotional trips for the reopening of the line began, with the passenger service reinstated on 27 September 1984.Flashing light signals were provided at the nearby Woolleys Road level crossing, located in the Down direction of the station, in 1984, with boom barriers provided later on in 2010.The current passenger shelters were provided in February 1986, replacing the original timber station building.In 1991, a siding at the station was abolished.

Bittern is a rural town in Metropolitan Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula located 82 km southeast from Melbourne's central business district, as a part of the urban enclave on Western Port comprising Bittern, Hastings, Crib Point, Somerville, and Tyabb. Its local government area is the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. It is served by Bittern railway station on the Stony Point greater-metropolitan line and by the 782 bus route operated by Peninsula Bus Lines between Frankston and Flinders. Bittern is named after the shy wetland bird, the Australasian bittern, which reflects the town's location amongst significant areas of native bushland and dense coastal vegetation.

Hastings is a town in Metropolitan Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. It is a part of the urban enclave on Western Port comprising Hastings, Bittern, Crib Point, Tyabb, and Somerville. Its local government area is the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. It is served by Hastings railway station on the Stony Point greater-metropolitan line. Hastings is situated on an inlet on Western Port, a major port and important environmental area. Hastings has multiple marinas and is home to many recreational boating activities.

Hastings railway station is located on the Stony Point line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Hastings, and it opened on 10 September 1889.The station once had a goods yard opposite the platform, however it is now closed and the tracks have been removed, with a disused crane remaining on site. In 1973, a number of roads in the yard were extended.On 22 June 1981, the passenger service between Frankston and Stony Point was withdrawn and replaced with a bus service, with the line between Long Island Junction and Stony Point also closing on the same day. On 16 September 1984, promotional trips for the reopening of the line began, with the passenger service reinstated on 27 September 1984.The current station building was provided in February 1986, replacing the original timber building.In 2004, points at the Up and Down ends of the station were removed, and the track was straight railed.
