With 955 employees, the hospital is the 5th largest employer in the city of Downey.In 2009, the hospital filed chapter 11 reorganization proceedings, citing financial system breakdowns and poor contracts as contributing factors; the hospital also serves a number of local residents that are underinsured or uninsured, contributing to financial challenges. Following the bankruptcy, the hospital was taken over by PIH Health, who also operates Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. The hospital has since invested in a new cardiac catheter lab, new general chemistry machines and digital mammography technology.

The casino features games including: Blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em, Seven Card Stud, Omaha hold 'em, Mexican Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Three Card Poker and Baccarat (card game). Financing to build the original Bicycle Club casino was provided by Sam Gilbert, who allegedly used money partially obtained from laundering drug money. The casino is home to the Legends of Poker, a tournament series established in 1995 that now includes a stop on the World Poker Tour. Prior to the Legends, the casino's main tournament series was called the Diamond Jim Brady.

Delta Air Lines Flight 89 was a scheduled flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). On January 14, 2020, the Boeing 777-200ER conducting the flight had engine problems shortly after takeoff; while returning to the origin airport for an emergency landing, it dumped fuel over populated areas adjacent to the city of Los Angeles, resulting in skin and lung irritation in at least 56 people on the ground and triggering a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation. The aircraft landed safely with no injuries to passengers or crew.
