United States Post Office and Sub-Treasury Building (Boston)

The John W. McCormack Post Office and Courthouse, formerly the United States Post Office, Courthouse, and Federal Building is a historic building at 5 Post Office Square in Boston, Massachusetts. The twenty-two-story, 331-foot (101 m) skyscraper was built between 1931 and 1933 to house federal courts, offices, and post office facilities. The Art Deco and Moderne structure was designed in a collaboration between the Supervising Architect of the United States Treasury Department and the Boston architectural firm of Cram and Ferguson. It occupies a city block bounded by Congress, Devonshire, Water, and Milk Streets, and has over 600,000 square feet (56,000 m2) of floor space. The exterior of the building is faced in granite from a variety of New England sources, as well as Indiana limestone. It was built on the site of the 1885 United States Post Office and Sub-Treasury Building. The building is named for John W. McCormack, a long-serving Boston Congressman who was Speaker of the House from 1962 to 1971. It was designated a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission in 1998 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

One Federal Street is a skyscraper in the Financial District neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Completed in 1975, it is Boston's 13th-tallest building, standing 520 feet (159 m) tall, and housing 38 floors. It is very close to the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway, Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Construction of the building was completed in 1976. However, it underwent renovations between 1992 and 2011. Some of the most notable tenants include: AON Service Corporation, Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP, Credit Suisse, J.P. Morgan, Iron Mountain, Oppenheimer, and U.S. Bank.

Federal Street is a street in the Financial District of Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to 1788, it was known as Long Lane. The street was renamed after state leaders met there in 1788 to determine Massachusetts' ratification of the United States Constitution.

The Codman Building is a historic building at 55 Kilby Street (also known as 10 Liberty Square) in Boston, Massachusetts. The first four stories of this six-story brick and stone building were designed by Sturgis & Brigham and built in 1874 in the Gothic Revival style. It is the only one of the firm's commercial designs in the Financial District to survive. The upper three floors, in a more typical Late Victorian fashion, were added sometime before 1898.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The George Thorndike Angell Memorial (sometimes called Angell Memorial Fountain or George Thorndike Angell Memorial Horse Fountain) is a monument commemorating George Thorndike Angell in Boston, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The work was surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program in 1997.

One Devonshire Place is a modern skyscraper in the Government Center neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts directly across from One Boston Place. Built in 1983, it stands 396 feet (121 meters) tall, housing 42 floors.The building is mixed-use, with 8 floors of offices and 35 of residential space (including a basement level). The building is built on two levels, with the Washington Street side a full story higher than the Devonshire side. There is an open driveway passing through the bottom level between these streets, a rarity for a skyscraper.

Julien Hall (built 1825) was a building in Boston, Massachusetts, on the corner of Congress Street and Milk Street. It flourished 1825-1843, housing a variety of public events such as lectures by Red Jacket, William Lloyd Garrison; temperance meetings; political meetings; auctions; exhibitions of live animals, portraits by William James Hubard, John H. I. Browere; performances of the "automaton chess player" and the "panharmonicon;" and so on. By 1842 boxer John Sheridan had converted space in the hall into an athletic gymnasium. The building was known as "Julien Hall" because it had been "built on the land where formerly stood the much noted Julien's Restorator." It was also called "Congress Hall." In 1828 it was described as "a large and convenient edifice ... erected in 1825, by Dr. Edward H. Robbins. ... There are two halls in this building, 55 by 44 feet square; the principal one is 15 feet high, and receives light through the cupola in the centre. These are rented for various purposes, such as public exhibitions, the holding of meetings, &c."

Julien's Restorator (c. 1793–1823) was a restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts, established by French-born Jean Baptiste Gilbert Payplat dis Julien. It was one of the first restaurants in Boston; previous public eating-rooms were in "taverns or boarding houses."

Congress Street in Boston, Massachusetts, is located in the Financial District and South Boston. It was first named in 1800. It was extended in 1854 (from State Street) as far as Atlantic Avenue, and in 1874 across Fort Point Channel into South Boston. Today's Congress Street consists of several segments of streets, previously named Atkinson's Street, Dalton Street, Gray's Alley, Leverett's Lane, Quaker Lane, and Shrimpton's Lane.

The Exchange Coffee House (1809-1818) was a hotel, coffeehouse, and place of business in Boston, Massachusetts, in the early 19th century. Designed by architect Asher Benjamin, it was located at Congress Square on Congress Street, and in its day it was the largest building in Boston and one of the tallest buildings in the northeastern United States. Andrew Dexter Jr. financed the project. Dexter resorted to financial fraud to see the construction to completion, and fled to Nova Scotia to escape prosecution and his creditors. The completed building passed to a succession of owners, who attempted to run it profitably, including Gilbert & Dean. The Exchange Coffee House burned down in November 1818. Its owners and financial backers lost most of their investment, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Winthrop Building is an historic skyscraper at 7 Water Street (intersection with Washington Street) in Boston, Massachusetts. The nine story brick and terracotta building was designed by Clarence H. Blackall in the Renaissance Revival style, and has the distinction of being the first skyscraper in the city to have been constructed with a steel frame. Completed in 1894, it was originally known as the Carter Building, but was renamed the Winthrop Building in 1899 after the Puritan Governor John Winthrop, whose second house was located adjacent to the site. Prominent past tenants include Landscape Architect Fletcher Steele in the 1920s and the Boston offices of the Associated Press.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and was designated a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission in 2016.

The Compton Building is a historic building at 159, 161-175 Devonshire Street and 18-20 Arch Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The eleven-story Classical Revival office tower was built in 1902–03 to a design by Winslow & Bigelow. It was connected by internal connections to the adjacent International Trust Company Building in 1961, when the two buildings were under common ownership. The building now houses the Club Quarters Hotel. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
