Charles Elliott House

The Sword Gate House is a historic house in Charleston, South Carolina. Built in stages, the main portion of the house is believed to have been built around 1803, possibly by French Huguenots James LaRoche and J. Lardent. The house replaced a simpler house that was shown on a plat in 1803.

The Rev. Paul Trapier Gervais House is a large, Greek Revival Charleston single house at 29 Legare Street in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Rebecca Screven House in Charleston, South Carolina is Charleston single house built sometime before 1828 at 35 Legare Street. Rebecca Screven built the house on property she inherited from her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Williams. In 1879, the house was bought by Louisa J. McCord. Louisa McCord was one of the most prominent women writers in antebellum South Carolina.In April 2014, the Historic Charleston Foundation bought the house through its revolving fund, a pool of money the foundation uses to acquire historic properties before reselling them to preservation-minded buyers subject to preservation easements. The foundation paid $1.75 million for the house, performed some work on the building, and listed it for resale in May 2014 through a competitive bid process. Both the interior and exterior of the house will be protected by easements, as will a garden designed by Loutrel Briggs.

The large, neoclassical Simmons-Edwards House is a Charleston single house built for Francis Simmons, a Johns Island planter, about 1800. The house, located at 14 Legare St., Charleston, South Carolina, is famous for its large brick gates with decorative wrought iron. The gates, which were installed by George Edwards (who owned the house until 1835) and which bear his initials, include finials that were carved to resemble Italian pinecones. They are frequently referred to as pineapples by locals, and the house is known popularly as the Pineapple Gates House. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.The house was occupied by James Adger Smyth, a mayor of Charleston from 1879 until he died on April 25, 1920. In 1951, Dr. L.S. Fuller and Mrs. Josephine Wilson sold the house to Standard Oil executive Bushrod B. Howard and his wife for $50,000. The Howards in turn sold the house for $100,000 (the highest price paid for a house in Charleston at that time) to Nancy Stevenson, the lieutenant governor of South Carolina during part of the Richard Riley administration and wife of Norman Stevenson.In April 1987, Thomas R. Bennett, a Charleston real estate agent, bought the house for $800,000. In May 1989, Bennett sold the house for $2 million to William and Cynthia Gilliam (again the highest price paid for a Charleston house at the time), and the Gilliams sold the house to the notorious artworld figure Andrew Crispo for $2,050,000 in September 1990.In April 1997, an executive with Goldman Sachs, John L. Thornton, purchased the house following a court-ordered auction to help satisfy the debts of its former owner, the scandal besieged art dealer Andrew Crispo. The $3.1 million high bid was the highest price paid for a house in Charleston at the time. The Thorntons are responsible for an extensive, heavily researched restoration of the gardens.According to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, "In 1816, George Edwards purchased the property and enlarged the premises, creating a garden which was separated from the house yard by a notable fence of wrought iron which had unusual stuccoed columns topped with sandstone balls."

The Colonel John Stuart House is a historic house at 104-106 Tradd Street in Charleston, South Carolina. Built in 1772, four years before the American Revolution, it is the city's oldest known example of a side-hall plan house. It is nationally significant as the home of Colonel John Stuart, who was the King's Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the South. He improved relations with the Five Civilized Tribes, especially the Cherokee Nation between the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

The John Fullerton House is a historic building on Legare Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The house was designed and built by Scottish master builder John Fullerton some time after he bought the land on December 31, 1772, and before he resold it at a much higher cost in 1777. Among the notable features of the house are the highly decorative window casings on the first and second floor; the console brackets and hoods reflect a high style that can be found on other notable houses of the same period in Charleston. The house is built of cypress.

The Charles Graves House is a three-story brick residence constructed for Charles Graves at 123 Tradd Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The roof has a hip in it and the details exhibit styling of the Federal architecture period. The interior follows the normal Charleston single house plan. There is a three-story stair hall in the center with a single room on either side. Most of the original Federal details have been retained. The entrance on the central portion of the side of the house exhibits Federal influence. It has a molded architrave as well as in the transom that is tall with tracery that is both neoclassical and fine. A two-story piazza with Tuscan columns, ceiling panels, and plain balusters is on the west facade. The house has brick covered in stucco that looks like stone, a string course made of bricks, quoining, and decorative brick work that looks like dentils. The original kitchen building is tied to the main house by a later addition.

The Capt. John Morrison House is a historic home at 125 Tradd St., Charleston, South Carolina, United States. Capt. John Morrison bought the property on May 1, 1800, but he did not first appear in a city directory until 1806. The sales price paid by Capt. Morrison does not definitely reflect the purchase of a pre-existing house; as a result, the house of often claimed to have been built in 1805. In the 1840s, piazzas were added to the house. The house is a traditional Charleston single house, a form typified by a central entry and stair hall with the central door on the "side" of the house and one room on each side. Because of the unusual width of the house, 125 Tradd St. is four-bays wide with an unusually deep entrance hall and rectangular rooms on each side. The house sold for $3,960,000 to a tech entrepreneur in November 2017.

The Cleland Kinloch and Burnet R. Maybank Huger House is a house in Charleston, South Carolina which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property upon which 8 Legare Street is built was originally the rear portion of the Miles Brewton House at 27 King Street. When Miles Brewton died in 1791, the recipients of his house conveyed it to William Alston who left it to his own daughter, Mary Alston (later Mary Alston Pringle). When Mary Alston Pringle's daughter married Cleland H. Huger, the Legare Street half of the property was pared off and used for the couple's house.The house was built in 1857, likely by contractor Patrick O'Donnell, in the Italianate style. In the 20th century, it was home to Charleston Mayor Burnet Rhett Maybank who later served in the United States Senate.

The Miles Brewton House is a National Historic Landmark residential complex located in Charleston, South Carolina. It is one of the finest examples of a double house (a reference to the arrangement of four main rooms per floor, separated by a central stair hall) in Charleston, designed on principles articulated by Andrea Palladio. Located on two acres, its extensive collection of dependencies makes it one of the most complete Georgian townhouse complexes in America. The house was built ca. 1765-1769 for Miles Brewton, a wealthy slave trader and planter.

The Dr. Peter Fayssoux House is a pre-Revolutionary house built about 1732 for Alexander Smith. After the Revolutionary War, the Georgian house was home to Dr. Peter Fayssoux, the surgeon general of the Continental Army. In the 1930s, the house was home of Beatrice Ravenel, a Charleston writer. Dr. Peter Fayssoux was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati of the State of Georgia.

The Grimke-Fraser Tenements were built in about 1762 on land that Frederic Grimke purchased in 1747. The thick brick wall that divides the house into two halves and which projects through the roof is evidence of the house's early use as a rental property made of two side-by-side units.The property includes a separate kitchen house in the rear which is perhaps as old as the main house. An application for demolition of the kitchen house to make way for a new house on the rear of the lot was denied in 1974.The house's common name includes a reference to Charles Fraser, a noted Charleston artist who once occupied the property and whose artwork includes views from the windows of the house.
