The Maine State Pier is a municipal-owned deepwater marine facility and music venue located at the intersection of Commercial Street and Franklin Street on the eastern waterfront in Portland, Maine.It was completed in 1924. In the mid-2000s, competing proposals were examined to redevelop the Maine State Pier into a tourist destination, but difficulties with state regulations and the late-2000s recession halted proposed redevelopment. In 2009, the first annual Portland Lobster Fest was held at the State Pier.In 2009, the Portland City Council approved spending $2.4 million to redevelop the end of pier. Improvements included the creation of an outdoor music venue. In 2011, rapper Wiz Khalifa and others appeared at the venue. In 2016, Maine native Howie Day performed "Collide" and other songs at the pier. In '07, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals from Vermont played there. Boston acts Guster played there in '09, and Rachel Platten in 2015. The venue has a maximum capacity of 3,000.During the 2011 Portland mayoral campaign, several candidates, including former State Senator Ethan Strimling made the lack of redevelopment at the Maine State Pier a key campaign issue. Many of Strimling's largest campaign donors were employees of Ocean Properties, one of the companies which sought to redevelop the pier during the 2000s.

Maine Wharf is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine. It is located on Commercial Street, between Franklin Street and Pearl Street, on the edge of the Fore River. On the waterfront side, it is situated between Maine State Pier (to the north) and Custom House Wharf (to the south).Today's businesses that exist on the wharf include Scales and Bang Island Mussels.

Custom House Wharf is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. Named for Portland's United States Custom House, which stands across Commercial Street from the wharf, on Pearl Street, the wharf is located between Maine Wharf (to the north) and Portland Pier (to the south).Today's businesses that exist on the wharf include Harbor Fish Market, Boone's Fish House & Oyster Room, and The Porthole pub, which was established in 1929.

Bagheera, formerly Beacon Rock, is a historic schooner normally berthed at the Maine State Pier in Portland, Maine. She is a two-masted auxiliary rigged schooner, built in 1924 by the noted naval architect John G. Alden, and is noted for her racing success on the Great Lakes. She is now owned and operated by the Portland Schooner Company, which offers sailing tours of Casco Bay, using Bagheera and Wendameen. Bagheera was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Clay Cove was a cove in Portland, District of Maine, United States. Located between the eastern ends of India Street and Franklin Street, it was the home of early shipyards, such as that of Nathaniel Dyer, Lemuel Dyer and Deacon Samuel Cobb. Fore Street, the former waterfront of the Old Port, was laid out in 1724 to the foot of Exchange Street on the west side of Clay Cove. The cove caused Fore Street to curve away from the Fore River between India Street and Pearl Street, to which Fore Street was not connected until 1765. Fort Loyal, the town's main fortification at the time, occupied a point at the corner of Fore Street and India Street. Atlantic Railroad Wharf overlooked the cove, prior to the wharf's demolition in the early 20th century, when Maine State Pier was constructed. Preble's Wharf (at the foot of India Street) and Tyng's Wharf (foot of what was then Fiddle Lane; replaced by today's Franklin Street) were another two wharves of Clay Cove. An important commercial center during its existence, the cove was filled in when commerce moved west to Commercial Street, which became the waterfront in the early 20th century after land was reclaimed from the Fore River. Portland Marine Railway was based at Clay Cove, on India Street, in 1826. It was sold to make way for the Grand Trunk Railway Station. A creek once flowed up from the cove to Turkey Lane (today's Newbury Street). It was large enough that ships used to sail up it past Middle Street, where an arch was built over the creek.

Fort Loyal was a British settler refuge and colonial outpost built in 1678 at Falmouth (present-day Portland, Maine) in Casco Bay. It was destroyed in 1690 by Abenaki and French forces at the Battle of Fort Loyal. The fort was rebuilt in 1742 and renamed Falmouth Fort before King George's War and rearmed again in 1755 for the French and Indian War. The fort was rebuilt a final time in 1775 for the American Revolution. The peninsula was first colonized by the English in 1632 as a fishing and trading village named Casco. When the Massachusetts Bay Colony absorbed the Province of Maine in 1658, the town's name changed to Falmouth. In 1676, the village was destroyed by the Abenaki during King Philip's War. English colonists returned two years later when peace resumed. Fort Loyal was built in 1678 in the center of Portland at the foot of present-day India Street to protect the town from future attacks. In 1690 Fort Loyal consisted of four wooden blockhouses and eight guns. During King William's War, a raiding party of French and Native allies destroyed the English settlement and massacred its inhabitants in the Battle of Fort Loyal (1690). At the end of the conflict Massachusetts did not rebuild the fort, instead building Fort Casco in Falmouth. The fort was rebuilt in 1742 and renamed "Falmouth Fort" before King George's War and then rearmed during the French and Indian War in 1755. Reverend Thomas Smith described the 1759 celebration at the fort in Falmouth upon the arrival of news that Quebec had fallen: "The cannon were fired at the fort yesterday and today. Mr. Mayhew's house was illuminated, and small arms fired in the evening, upon further and more authentic news of the victory at Quebec." Earthworks were constructed on the Fort Loyal site in 1775 as part of harbor defenses during the American Revolution and known as the "Lower Battery." Elements from earlier iterations of the fort, such as the guard house, were still in use. The bluff on which the fort had been located was leveled off during the construction of the Grand Trunk Railway in the 1850s. Today the fort's location is memorialized by a plaque on the Grand Trunk Office Building at the corner of India and Thames Streets in Portland.

Boone's Fish House & Oyster Room is a restaurant in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine, United States. Established in 1898, on Custom House Wharf, it is one of the oldest restaurants in the state. The business, owned Darcy Paige Smith (and her then-husband, Harding Lee Smith), is named for Alexander Boone, who is believed to have created the recipe for stuffed lobster. Alexander's son, Gene, owned the restaurant for around forty years, from the 1920s to the 1960s. Notable patrons have included Ingrid Bergman, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe.

Portland station was a passenger rail station on the Grand Trunk Railway in Portland, Maine, United States. It stood to at the foot of India Street, Portland's first street, between 1903 and 1966. It was one of Portland's four railroad stations for the Portland and Forest Avenue Railroad Company over its history, and one of the two stations in the city at the time of the station's construction. The other was Union Station, which has also been demolished. The Grand Trunk and steamship offices building still stands, at the corner of India Street and Thames Street. As of 2024, it was in use as the head office of Gorham Savings Bank. A third story was added to this building in 1903. The station's clock tower was removed in 1948, eighteen years before the station itself was razed. Construction of the Grand Trunk Railways was delayed by the American Civil War, but used rail was obtained from New Brunswick in 1863 to complete a line from India Street along Middle Street, through Monument Square, along Congress Street, and then down High Street, and westerly along Spring Street to Clark Street. Service with horse-drawn street cars began on 12 October 1863. In 1864, an adjoining line was built along Preble Street from Monument Square and thence along Portland Street and Forest Avenue to Woodfords Corner. This line was later extended to Morrills Corner along Pleasant Avenue and Stevens Avenue. Lines along Congress Street were extended westward to Longfellow Square and eastward to Atlantic Street on Munjoy Hill. Horse-drawn sleighs were substituted for rail cars when snow and ice covered the streets during winter months to avoid ice removal inconveniencing other horse-drawn sleighs. In the late 19th century, Portland was favored over Boston as the seaport terminus for the Grand Trunk Railway from Montreal. When the Maine Coast Special train to Montreal was withdrawn 1966, the station was abandoned.

Fore Street is a restaurant at 288 Fore Street in the Old Port neighborhood of Portland, Maine, United States. Owned by Dana Street and Sam Hayward, the restaurant opened in 1996. It was named one of Gourmet magazine's top 50 restaurants in the United States in 2002, being placed 16th on the list. Its former chef Hayward was named the top chef in the Northeastern US in 2004 by the James Beard Foundation. In 2002, The Atlantic magazine named Fore Street a "restaurant to build a trip around." In February 2011, Fore Street was nominated by the Beard Foundation for the award of 'Most Outstanding Restaurant'. Dana Street owns three other businesses in the city: Street & Co., Standard Baking Co. and Scales.

Portland Pier is located at the intersection of Commercial Street and Silver Street on the eastern waterfront in Portland, Maine. It is located between Custom House Wharf (to the north) and Long Wharf (to the south), on the edge of the Fore River. Notable businesses on the pier include J's Oyster House and New Meadows Lobster.

The United States Custom House is a historic custom house at 312 Fore Street in downtown Portland, Maine. It was built from 1867–1872 to house offices of the United States Customs Service, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Samuel Butts House (also known as the Samuel Butts House and Store; formerly known as the Mariner's House) is a historic Colonial-style building in Portland, Maine, United States. Located in Boothby Square, on Fore Street, the building was completed in 1792, when Fore Street was at the shoreline. It is the second-oldest extant building on the Portland peninsula, after the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, which pre-dates it by around six years. It is believed a third storey was added well after the building was completed. Samuel Butts (1760–1838) was a tailor who moved to Portland from Boston in 1784.
