The Inns on the National Road is a national historic district near Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. It originally consisted of 11 Maryland inns on the National Road and located in Allegany and Garrett counties. Those that remain stand as the physical remains of the almost-legendary hospitality offered on this well-traveled route to the west.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Mount Savage is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 873.A small blue-collar community, Mount Savage lies at the base of Big Savage Mountain in the Allegheny Mountains, between the cities of Frostburg and Cumberland. It began as a small farming settlement in the mid-19th century, but it was not until 1844 that the region was put on the nation's map with the pressing of the first iron rail in the United States. After this claim to fame, Mount Savage became the fifth largest city in Maryland. Named as the headquarters for the Mount Savage Railroad and later the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad (C&P), the area was deemed an industrial center. In addition to the rail businesses, Mount Savage attracted a foundry, two brick refractories, and several local merchants. In this company town, the industries shaped the economy and topography of Mount Savage, building housing for workers and donating land for schools, churches, and other public buildings. It was a cultural melting pot attracting English businessmen and Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Italian, and German workers. With this diverse mix of cultures, the identity of Mount Savage was molded into a close-knit community. Despite the loss of the industries to the region, Mount Savage continues to celebrate its hard-working traditions. The Mount Savage Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Mount Savage Historic District is a national historic district in Mount Savage, Allegany County, Maryland. It comprises 189 19th and 20th century buildings, structures, and sites within this industrial community northwest of Cumberland. The structures reflect the community's development as a center of the iron, coal, brick, and railroad industries from the 1830s to the early 20th century. Included are a set of vertical-board duplexes on Old Row built about 1840, and possibly the earliest examples of workers' housing remaining in the region.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Mount Savage Iron Works operated from 1837 to 1868 in Mount Savage, Maryland. The ironworks were the largest in the United States in the late 1840s, and the first in the nation to produce heavy rails for construction of railroads. The works were established in an area adjacent to mines for coal, iron ore and fire clay. Facilities included blast furnaces, puddling furnaces, a rolling mill, iron refineries, coke production and brick production.

The Allegheny Highlands Trail of Maryland (AHTM) is a 20.47-mile (32.94 km) long rail trail between the C&O Canal in Cumberland and the Mason–Dixon line, where it meets the Allegheny Highlands Trail of Pennsylvania. It forms part of the Pittsburgh–Washington, DC Great Allegheny Passage. The trail follows the route of the Connellsville extension of the Western Maryland Railway. Track still parallels the trail between Cumberland and Frostburg; it is used by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

Eckhart Mines is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 932.Eckhart Mines lies at the southwestern base of Federal Hill, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east of Frostburg and 0.8 miles (1.3 km) northwest of Clarysville. Braddock Run begins near Eckhart Mines. The town was founded as a company town for the nearby Eckhart Mines. According to the Maryland Mining Heritage Guide, it was "the first coal company town in Maryland."The original owner was George Eckhardt, an immigrant from Germany. The outcrop of the Pittsburgh coal seam here is known locally as "the big vein" or the "14 foot coal". The Eckhart Mines' location here was the first bituminous coal mine developed in the Georges Creek Valley coalfield, because this is where the National Road (now U.S. Route 40 Alternate) crossed the coal outcrop. The Eckhart operation was known as the Maryland Mining Company, which eventually combined with other companies to form the Consolidation Coal Company (now Consol Energy). The Eckhart operation was the first commercial coal company in the United States.

Barrelville (historically sometimes known as Pamosa) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 73. It is located between Corriganville and Mount Savage, where an 1804 road from Pennsylvania intersected the legendary Turkey Foot Road. Jennings Run flows from Mount Savage to Barrelville, where another tributary that runs south from Wellersburg, Pennsylvania, joins Jennings Run.

Zihlman (formerly Allegany) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 362.Zihlman is located along Maryland Route 36, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of and 500 feet (150 m) lower in elevation than Frostburg. Mount Savage is 3 miles (5 km) further northeast along MD 36.

Clarysville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 73.It is located along U.S. Route 40 Alternate at its intersection with Maryland Route 55. Frostburg is 2 miles (3 km) to the west, and Cumberland is 7 miles (11 km) to the east along Route 40 Alt. Clarysville was known around the region for the Clarysville Inn, a historic building which stood from 1807 until it burned in 1999. During the American Civil War, the inn served as a military hospital, treating wounded soldiers.The exit of the Hoffman drainage tunnel, constructed to drain several coal mines, is near Clarysville.

The Borden Tunnel is a 957-foot long, formerly abandoned, railway tunnel located about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Frostburg, Maryland. The tunnel is lit with a series of motion activated LED lights powered by a solar panel located just north of the tunnel. It is now part of the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail.The Western Maryland Railway built the tunnel in 1911 for its Connellsville Subdivision. The rail line was abandoned in 1975.

The Hoffman tunnel, or Hoffman drainage tunnel, was constructed to drain water from coal mines northwest of Clarysville in Allegany County, Maryland. The two-mile-long tunnel drains into the Braddock Run tributary of Wills Creek.
