Brouwersdam

Klaaskinderenkerke (also spelled 'Klaaskinderkerke') is a former village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The polder Klaaskinderen was flooded on December 14, 1511, and was never reclaimed again. The church of Klaaskinderenkerke disappeared in this flood, and in the 19th century, only a small hamlet was left.The hamlet has now disappeared from the maps. It was located east of the village of Scharendijke. Klaaskinderkerke was a separate municipality until 1813, when it was merged with Duivendijke.

The village was first mentioned in 1487 as Schaerdendijke, and is a combination of dike and trench. Scharendijke is a dike village. It was originally a little hamlet. Between 1901 and 1902, a harbour was built and it developed into a little village around the harbour.Scharendijke was home to 204 people in 1840. Part of the village was rebuilt after the North Sea flood of 1953. From the 1970s onwards, holiday homes were built around the village.Scharendijke used to be part of the municipality of Elkerzee. In 1960, the municipality of Middenschouwen was created and Scharendijk became its capital. In 1997, it was merged into Schouwen-Duiveland.

It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 1 km south of Scharendijke.Elkerzee is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Scharendijke. It has its own place name signs. It was home to 489 people in 1840. Nowadays it consists of about 10 houses. A church was built in 1741, but was demolished in 1958, because a new church had been built in neighbouring Scharendijke.The grist mill De Lelie was built in 1868 and decommissioned in 1960. In 2008, it was bought and turned into a restaurant specialising in pan cakes. The flour for the pancakes is ground by the wind mill.Elkerzee was a separate municipality until 1961, when it was merged into Middenschouwen.

Middenschouwen was created in a merger of Duivendijke, Elkerzee, Ellemeet and Kerkwerve in 1961. It existed until 1997, when it was merged into the new municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland.

The village had a church, which was demolished before the middle of the 18th century. The first bishop of Leeuwarden, Cunerus Petri, was born in Duivendijke around 1530.Until 1961, Duivendijke was the name of a separate municipality, that also covered the hamlets Klaaskinderenkerke, Brijdorpe and Looperskapelle.

The statistical area "Brouwershaven", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 1540.Brouwershaven was a separate municipality until 1997, when it was merged into Schouwen-Duiveland.

It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 3 km southwest of Brouwershaven.Nieuwerkerke is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Kerkwerve. It was home to 140 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of a handful of houses. It used to have a church, but it was destroyed in 1576 by Spanish troops and never rebuilt.Nieuwerkerke was a separate municipality until 1813, when it was merged with Kerkwerve.Nieuwerkerke should not be confused with Nieuwerkerk, a larger village on the same island.
