It is located in the Hunter Park neighborhood of Riverside and about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the campus of the University of California, Riverside, after which the station is named. Weekend service consists of 4 trains (2 in each direction) on both Saturday and Sunday, running westbound in the morning and eastbound in the evening.

While unofficial, Highgrove is known as the "Riverside Strip" or Riverside red-light district, similar to the Las Vegas Strip in unincorporated Paradise, NV, located on the Iowa Avenue stretch. A few smoke/weed shops are opened now to attract tourists. Some investors see Highgrove as the future tourist spot for a new Riverside Chinatown Plaza or a boutique "strip" entertainment retail/hotel resort on Iowa Ave. and Main St. intersection, adjacent to the 215 freeway, at an undetermined build date. Other suggestions include a Mission Revival, Balinese, Scottish, or Roman-architecture retail/hotel/concert-venue entertainment resort. This community publishes its own newsletter, Highgrove Happenings, each month, since 1994.
