St. Julian's railway bridge

St Julians (Welsh: Sain Silian) is a community and coterminous electoral district (ward) of the City of Newport, South Wales. The community is bounded by the River Usk to the west and north, The Moorings, Badminton Road, Reynolds Close, Rembrandt Way, Constable Drive, Heather Road, Kelly Road, Merlin Crescent, Avalon Drive, across St Julian's Road and Norfolk Road to the east, Christchurch Road, Church Road, Clarence Place and Newport Bridge to the south. The ward includes the districts of Barnardtown, Riverside, and most of St. Julians (the rest being in Beechwood ward).

The M4 motorway Usk bridge, officially St. Julians Bridge, carries the M4 motorway across the River Usk in the city of Newport, Wales. The bridge comprises two separate 450-foot (140 m) structures, for the eastbound and westbound carriageways. When travelling westbound, the bridges lead directly into the twin 1,200-foot-long (370 m) Brynglas Tunnels. Work commenced on both the bridge and the tunnels on 10 September 1962, two months after work commenced on the George Street Bridge further downstream. The entire Newport bypass section of the M4 (junctions 24 to 28) finally opened in 1967. In 1989, two crossings were added to connect the M4 with the newly constructed junction 25a and the A4042.

Crindau Marina is a possible development in Crindau, Newport. The marina would provide opportunities for new housing, shops and leisure facilities focused around a waterside location. Newport Unlimited, the Newport urban regeneration company, have secured £75,000 of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Catching the Wave’ action plan (to stimulate coastal economies in Wales), to consider the possibility of a developing a marina in Crindau. The marina would be part of the regeneration of Newport as a whole.

Barnardtown is a small area to the east of Newport Bridge in the city of Newport. It is roughly bounded by Duckpool Road, Church Road and Caerleon Road. It lies within the electoral ward of Saint Julian's and to the west is Riverside. The original houses in the area were very slum-like tight rows with people living in appalling conditions. A local religious man Edward Barnard invested into building small new terraces. A condition of building the "new village" was that there were to be no pubs in the area and the names of the streets are that of church figures, e.g. Morden Road, Canon Street, Bishop Street, &c.Today the area features the Grade II listed Newport ODEON building and Rodney Parade stadium, home of Newport County A.F.C., Newport RFC, and the Dragons rugby franchise. Redevelopment of Clarence Place has been underway with a number of historic buildings either being renovated, such as the ODEON, or for sale, such as historic Newport music venue of the 1990s, TJ's.

Crindau (Welsh: Crindai) is a Victorian inner-city area just north of the city centre in Newport in south-east Wales. It lies within the Shaftesbury electoral district (ward) and community (parish). Crindau is roughly bounded by the Monmouthshire canal to the west, the M4 motorway to the north, River Usk to the east and South Wales Main Line to the south. It is bisected by the elevated section of the A4042 road. The district is well-served in transport terms as it contains junction 26 and 25a of the M4 as well as the A4042 and A4051 roads. There is a regular Newport Bus service from Malpas and Bettws to the city centre. To the eastern side, adjoining the river is Shaftesbury Park, opened in 1898, which was the original home of Newport Rugby Club before they moved to the Newport Athletics and Cricket Club site at Rodney Parade. A cycle and pedestrian walkway alongside the River Usk links Newport city centre to the centre of Caerleon along National Cycle Route 88. There is a marked heritage trail in Caerleon. Crindau is well served by a number of churches providing a cross-section of Christian traditions including Malpas Road Evangelical Church (built 1897), Crindau Community Church (built 1901), and All Saints Church (built 1898, rebuilt 1995).

The Brynglas Tunnels carry the M4 under Brynglas Hill in Newport, Wales. The 360-metre-long (390 yd) tunnels are the first and only twin–bored tunnels in the UK motorway network.The tunnels and adjacent M4 motorway Usk bridge were originally planned by Newport Corporation in August 1959 in a plan submitted to the Ministry of Transport. Work started on the £3m tunnels project - led by engineer Sir Owen Williams on 10 September 1962. Both structures were complete and open to traffic on 5 May 1967. During the construction several houses on Brynglas Road (where the modern Newport Lodge Hotel now stands) had to be demolished due to structural weaknesses caused by the tunnelling and prompting questions in the House of Commons.

Victoria is both a community (civil parish) and an electoral ward (division) of the city of Newport. The ward is bounded by the River Usk to the west and south, Newport Bridge, Clarence Place, Church Road and Christchurch Road to the north, Victoria Avenue, Wharf Road (as far as the railway bridge), a section of the Great Western Main Line as far as (but not including) Soho Street, Telford Street and Lilleshall Street to the east. The area is governed by the Newport City Council. The ward includes the district of Maindee, as well as the home of Newport Rugby Club and the annual Maindee Festival. The district of Victoria, Maindee in particular, is home to a large Asian population. Many people are of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin and there are now a slowly increasing number of Kurdish refugees.

The former Newport Odeon, currently trading as The NEON, is a large Grade II listed building in the city of Newport, South Wales. It is located at the junction of Clarence Place and Chepstow Road on the east side of Newport city centre, near Newport Bridge. The building is one of the few true examples of Art Deco architecture in Newport.

Newport City Radio is a community radio station serving the city of Newport, in south east Wales. It broadcasts online via its website and the TuneIn service. It was previously named Urban Circle Radio.

The Church of St John is a Victorian Church in Wales parish church in Maindee, Newport, Wales.

Maindee (Welsh: Maendy) is a large inner-city commercial and residential area in the city of Newport, South Wales. It lies on the eastern side of the River Usk, mostly within the electoral district (ward) of Victoria, although some areas traditionally associated with Maindee are in the Beechwood ward. The name 'Maindee' is an anglicised version of Maendy meaning 'stone house'. Maindee is home to a sizeable Asian-Muslim population with three mosques located in the area. A large selection of shops are located on Chepstow Road, Corporation Road and Church Road. A station of Gwent Police and a public library are located on Chepstow Road. A station of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is also located in Maindee. The annual Maindee Festival and Parade, held each Summer since 1996, is a popular community arts event for all residents in Newport. The former Maindee Pools is an Art Deco building. The disused empty swimming pool has been used for location shots in the BBC TV series Being Human. Maindee Unlimited, a community-led regeneration charity for the Maindee area, was formed in 2014. It re-opened Llyfrgell Maindee Library for community use in October 2015. It re-opened the public toilets on Chepstow Road as "Maindee Triangle" in 2023. It also runs a range of environmental and public gardening projects.
