Nicolls' Outpost was the smaller and more northern of two forts built by British Lt. Col. Edward Nicolls during the War of 1812. (The Americans referred to it as Fort Apalachicola. Built at the end of 1814, together with the larger "British post" or storage depot down the Apalachicola,: 47  it was "the northernmost post built by the British during their Gulf Coast Campaign". It was just below the Spanish Florida–Georgia border, where the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers meet to form the Apalachicola, in River Landing Park in modern Chattahoochee, Florida. Even though what was built was smaller than the much larger British post down the Apalachicola, it was intended to be the base, presumably enlarged, for an English invasion of the United States, and British post was to have been its supply depot. The 1815 end of the War of 1812 aborted this project. It was built atop the largest of three surviving mounds of the prehistoric Fort Walton culture. Above the winter flood stage of the Apalachicola, it could reach both forks of the river with cannon fire. It was built in 1814 and abandoned early in 1815, at the end of the war. It was armed with a 5+1⁄2-inch howitzer. It also had a coehorn, a mortar that could fire 24-pound shells. According to a report of U.S. Colonel and Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins, there were "200 troops white and black and an assemblage of 500 [Creek] Warriors", "well supplied with cloth[e]s and munitions of War". The intention was to mount an expedition "up the river" (the Flint), bringing the cannon along.: 76  Georgia militia, other U.S. forces, and the faction of the Creek allied with the U.S. (the Lower Creeks) were preparing upriver (in Georgia) for a battle. News of the treaty ending the war (Treaty of Ghent), which reached both sides in February 1815, prevented the battle from taking place. The British abandoned both of its forts on the Apalachicola, leaving them in the hands of the black Corps of Colonial Marines that Nicolls had trained, and of Red Stick Creek Neamathla and his warriors.

Jim Woodruff Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Apalachicola River, about 1,000 feet (300 m) south of that river's origin at the confluence of the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers. The dam impounds Lake Seminole on the common border of Florida and Georgia. The dam is named in honor of James W. Woodruff, Sr., a Georgia businessman who spearheaded the development of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Project.Electricity from the dam is marketed by the Southeastern Power Administration.

The Chattahoochee River () forms the southern half of the Alabama and Georgia border, as well as a portion of the Florida and Georgia border. It is a tributary of the Apalachicola River, a relatively short river formed by the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers and emptying from Florida into Apalachicola Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. The Chattahoochee River is about 430 miles (690 km) long. The Chattahoochee, Flint, and Apalachicola rivers together make up the Apalachicola–Chattahoochee–Flint River Basin (ACF River Basin). The Chattahoochee makes up the largest part of the ACF's drainage basin.

Chattahoochee High School (CHS) was a public middle and high school in Chattahoochee, Florida. It was a part of the Gadsden County Public Schools. In its final years it was also known as Chattahoochee High Magnet School (CHMS). The school's student body became racially integrated in 1965. That year the school initially admitted black teachers only as physical education teachers, and asked them to keep white and black students separate.According to Headley J. White, author of the 2006 PhD thesis "Effects of Desegregation on Gadsden County, Florida Public Schools 1968-1972," in post-desegregation Gadsden County, "to some extent" there was less stigma applied against white students who attended Chattahoochee High compared to those attending other public schools in Gadsden County.In 2003 the school, which was "C"-ranked in Florida's school evaluation system, had 228 students. The school board decided it was too small to give a proper course offering to its students. West Gadsden High School, established in 2004, absorbed students who formerly attended Chattahoochee High School and Greensboro High School. Brian Miller of the Tallahassee Democrat stated that the high school mergers damaged the school athletic spirit in the county as the former school identities were discarded.

Lake Seminole is a reservoir located in the southwest corner of Georgia along its border with Florida, maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Chattahoochee and Flint rivers join in the lake, before flowing from the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam, which impounds the lake, as the Apalachicola River. The lake contains 37,500 acres (152 km2) of water, and has a shoreline of 376 mi (605 km). The fish in Lake Seminole include largemouth bass, crappie, chain pickerel, catfish, striped bass and other species. American alligators, snakes and various waterfowl are also present in the lake, which is known for its goose hunting.

Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a hospital and psychiatric hospital in Chattahoochee, Florida. Established in 1876, it was Florida's only state mental institution until 1947. It currently has a capacity of 1,042 patients. The hospital's current Administration Building is on the National Register of Historic Places.The facility's property previously served as a military arsenal during the Seminole Wars and the American Civil War, and later became the site of Florida's first state prison. It was subsequently refurbished as a mental hospital, originally known as Florida State Hospital for the Insane, which opened in 1876. It gained notoriety over the course of its long history. It was sued in O'Connor v. Donaldson, a case that went to the US Supreme Court, which ruled that the hospital had illegally confined one of its patients. The decision contributed to the deinstitutionalization movement, which resulted in changes to state laws and the closure of many public mental institutions in the country. The hospital today treats patients with severe mental disabilities who have been civilly or forensically committed to the institution.

The U.S. Arsenal-Officers Quarters (also known as the Mt. Vernon Arsenal or Chattahoochee Arsenal) is a historic site in Chattahoochee, Florida. It is located at 100 North Main Street, part of the Florida State Hospital on U.S. 90. On July 2, 1973, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Chattahoochee is a city in Gadsden County, Florida, United States. Its history dates to the Spanish era. It is part of the Tallahassee, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,955 as of the 2020 census. Chattahoochee sits on the banks of the Apalachicola River, and is separated by the Apalachicola and Victory bridges from neighboring Sneads, Florida, which is in Jackson County. Chattahoochee has its own police force with over ten sworn officers and a police chief. Chattahoochee is a name derived from the Creek language meaning "marked rocks".

The Apalachee Correctional Institution, East Unit is a state prison for men located in Sneads, Jackson County, Florida, owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. This facility has a mix of security levels, including minimum, medium, and close, and houses adult male offenders. Apalachee Correctional Institution East Unit first opened in 1949 and has a maximum capacity of 1322 prisoners.

Established in 1881, Sneads High School is a high school with grades 9–12. It is located in the rural countryside of Sneads, west of Tallahassee, in Jackson County, Florida. This school is administered by the Jackson County School Board and is one of 5 high schools in the county. As of 2017 Sneads High has 389 total students and a graduation rate of 78% The neighboring communities of Sneads and Grand Ridge combined their high schools and middle schools beginning with the 2006–2007 school year. Grades 9–12 at Grand Ridge were added to the Sneads High School and the 6-8 grades at Sneads High are now at Grand Ridge, Sneads retained its elementary school, as did Grand Ridge. Community members had been opposed to the merger of these local rivals, especially those whose children would have completed their educations at Grand Ridge High School, but the transition went smoothly, with the only real challenge being the school bus routes and schedules.Ashleigh Lollie, a 2009 graduate of Sneads High School, will be the 2015 Miss Florida USA.Sneads High School is nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report and received a bronze medal in 2017 for exceptional state required test scores and student college readiness.As of 2021, the Sneads High School Girls Varsity Volleyball team have won the last nine FHSAA state 1A championships.

Sneads is a town in Jackson County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2020 census. Sneads was founded in 1894, and is the fourth largest municipality in Jackson County, following Marianna (the county seat), Graceville and Malone.

Three Rivers State Park is a Florida State Park located north of Sneads, on the shores of Lake Seminole near the Georgia border, in northwestern Florida. It is named for the main rivers associated with Lake Seminole: the Chattahoochee and the Flint (which flow into it from Georgia), and the Apalachicola (whose source is the lake itself.)
