Ester Mountains

The Bischof (2,033 metres) is a mountain peak in the Bavarian Prealps of southern Germany. It lies in the westernmost part of the Bavarian Prealps in the Ester Mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The usual climb to the top runs from Oberau via the Oberauer Steig to the saddle between the Bischof and the Hoher Fricken and on over the western ridge on good tracks through the Latschen to the summit (a total of about 3.5 hours climb).

The Krottenkopf (German pronunciation: [ˈkʁɔtənˌkɔpf]), 2,086 metres/6,844 ft, is a peak in the Ester Mountains and the highest mountain in the Bavarian Prealps. It lies within the Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The Wank (German pronunciation: [ˈvaŋk]) is a mountain in southern Germany, situated in the Loisach valley close to the Austrian border in the southwestern Ester Mountains range near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It rises from about 700 metres (2,300 ft) above mean sea level up to 1,780 metres (5,840 ft) at the summit. The mountain is crowned by a grassy summit which has views over Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the surrounding region. The summit can be reached via the eponymous Wankbahn, a cable car system that runs during the summer months, or by a network of footpaths that criss-cross the area. A mountain hut on the summit, the Wank-Haus, provides food and accommodation, and a nearby scientific observatory plays a role in monitoring atmospheric and climatic conditions. The Wank is a destination for hikers, day-trippers from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and paragliders.

The Hoher Fricken ("High Fricken") is a mountain 1,940 m above sea level (NHN) high, in the Ester Mountains in the Bavarian Prealps and lies between the Wank and the over 2000 m high Bischof. Below and to the north is the Niederer Fricken ("Low Fricken", 1,682 m above sea level (NHN)) and the Fricken Cirque (Frickenkar). The summit may be reached as a mountain hike from Oberau or from the swimming pool in Farchant (via the path to the Esterbergalm) or rather more steeply from Farchant on a route going past the Kuhflucht Waterfalls. Halfway up the climb via the Kuhflucht Falls lies the Fricken Cave. Hiking time in each case is about 4 hours. Since the re-opening of the Farchant railway halt in December 2010 the Munich–Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway once again offers suitable crossing route options, e. g. Farchant – Hoher Fricken – Esterbergalm – Partenkirchen or Farchant – Hoher Fricken – Oberau.

The Hohe Kisten is a mountain, 1,922 m above sea level (NN), in the Ester range in the Bavarian Prealps and lies north of the Krottenkopf – the main summit of the Ester range.The Hohe Kisten is a mountain with two distinct sides: a rocky northern side on which the summit section looks like a large box (German: Kiste = box), and a gentle southern side on which the summit barely stands out at all. The summit may be reached on a straightforward mountain touring route from Wallgau. The climb from Eschenlohe into the Loisach valley thorough the Puster valley requires endurance and sure-footedness. Another approach is along the route near the arête from the Weilheimer Hut (1,946 m). For this one, it is worth considering using the Hohe Kisten as a crossing point: for example on a very long day tour from Eschenlohe via the Hohe Kisten and Weilheimer Hut to Oberau (using the Munich–Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway) or as part of a longer tour through the Ester Mountains. In the 1970s it was planned to build a cable car from Eschenlohe to the summit of the Hohe Kisten, The project, which also envisaged several ski lifts, failed due to opposition from the German Nature Conservation Federation, Bund Naturschutz.

The 41st G7 summit was held in Schloss Elmau, Krün, Bavaria and Germany on 7–8 June 2015. In March 2014 the remaining members of the G8 declared that a meaningful discussion was currently not possible with Russia, and since then meetings have continued under the G7 name (not to be confused with the G7 meetings of finance ministers and central bank governors).

Schloss Elmau is a four-story castle and national monument with hipped roof, tower and porch, situated between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald in a sanctuary of the Bavarian Alps, Germany. It lies at the foot of the Wetterstein mountains in a Naturschutzgebiet (nature reserve), belonging to the Krün municipality. It was built by philosopher and theologian Johannes Müller and architect Carl Sattler between 1914 and 1916.

Oberau is a municipality in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in Bavaria, Germany.

Oberau station (German: Bahnhof Oberau) is a railway station in the municipality of Oberau, in Bavaria, Germany. It is located on the Munich–Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway of Deutsche Bahn.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Bavarian: Garmasch-Partakurch) is a Landkreis (district) in Bavaria, Germany. It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the districts of Ostallgäu, Weilheim-Schongau and Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, and by the Austrian state of Tyrol.

Klais station is a railway station in the Klais district of the municipality of Krün, located in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district in Bavaria, Germany.

Scharnitz Abbey (German: Kloster Scharnitz) was a Benedictine monastery in Mittenwald in Bavaria, Germany. The monastery, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was founded before 763 by Reginperht and Irminfried, believed to be members of the Bavarian noble family of the Huosi. Arbeo of Freising, a member of the same family, was its first abbot, until he was appointed Bishop of Freising in 764. Between 769 and 772, on his advice, the community was resettled to Schlehdorf Abbey on the Kochelsee, under abbot Atto, who is counted as the first abbot of Schlehdorf. The reasons for the move so soon after the foundation are not known.
